Killer whales (Orcas) damage 36ft sailboat near Gibraltar (06.2021)

4 adult Orcas attack Westerly Corsair for 30 minutes, west of Gibraltar, south of Spain. We continued our passage to Gibraltar using the emergency tiller, after our rudder was severely damaged together with the steering mechanism and the autopilot mechanism. At least 2 other boats had incidents on that day (end of June) and one 8m boat ended up capsized. Luckily no victims.

As I have said in other comments: weather was good and calm (I don't think that anything could have capsized an 8m boat on that day). The radio announcement that you can hear in the video was in a 2 mile radius from our incident location, half an hour later. So we assumed that it was also an orca incident. Rumours in the port also stated so... but we never heard the final official information. Maybe you can ask for the official info at the Spanish Coast Guard/Cadiz port authorities

The sad thing is just, why was there such a small boat even in this waters? The Portuguese and Spanish coast guard as also the government announced already end of 2020 that all sailing boats smaller than 35ft have to avoid these waters. I’m sorry to say it that blunt, if they can’t listen they have to deal with the consequences easy as that. The attacks are ongoing since 2018, so everyone should know about it till now, if people can’t listen… I wouldn’t cross this section of the sea in a smaller boat that 40ft…

Orcas use sound to navigate their environment, find food, and communicate to each other. Unfortunately with countries like Spain France and Italy overfishing, there’s been a heightened noise pollution and that drives this violent behavior. I hope they will reduce the fishing activities so both the fish and the people are safe.

  • @bophoto

it seems they go after rudders - they also hunt larger wales as a group, by going after the fins. without knowing as im not a researcher, but many times diving around my sailboat, the shape is reminiscent of a whale with fins. me thinking with humans having probably depleted a lot of food sources, sailboats particularly are starting to look like a worthy chew toy that might yield something if you can find a way to kill it. Agree - flash bangs might be worth a try to make these hulls less interesting. like bears, we really like the bears but prefer tehy don't consider us food sources.

Its very rare for orca to injure humans. They will either show a curious interest in human swimmers or just swim away if they are not interested or in the mood to play. Orca certainly do not recognise humans as food. They probably slap smaller propelled boats for various reasons. It could be they don't like some sounds, or they're practicing their pack hunting skills or may be they're just being mischievous.

according to news there are 2 groups of orcas that for around 4 years now are aggressive towards boats in that region. official cause is not known. from what i have read boats are warned and advised to not interact and call coast guard. my guess is some underdeveloped human done something stupid to teach them this behaviour. since it is not only one group somebody was doing this more than once in this region - through investigation of fisherman's from that time and region should be done. it may help to find out how to fix it and prevent irresponsible ppl from leaving basements.

Engage reverse gear, helm amidships and motor as fast as you can safely (2 or 3 knots will do). They tend to attack from astern and the rudder is a relatively weak, exposed and easy target. The whales are very intelligent creatures, when in reverse with the rudder ahead of a whirling prop if they miscalculate their approach they know they will risk injury. They won't chew on your lead keel for long.

They tried to tell us by swimming around wearing salmon as hats.....yes, look it up. they wore fish as hats for us to see. that didn't get the message across....so now it's on to boat warfare. Jump in next time you see them ramming the boat....they will explain it to you.

I live in the north-eastern US, where we have regular encounters with black bears, a mostly herbivorous and sometimes scavenging animal that prefers overturning garbage cans to hunting prey. Anyway, the big "No-No" is feeding them; they will return with gusto to anyone/place who gives them food, or where they know they can catch an easy meal. Some of the comments below have it that fisherman have fed the orcas by way of dangling fish/meat on hooks over the decks of their boats - could it be that they simply looking for food that has once been offered to them, and are mistaking the rudders that keep getting their attention (and teeth) for a "feeding hour"-type mechanism?

Different Orca pods develop what can best be described as different "cultures." This includes different hunting practices, prey choices, and behaviors. Obviously, the Orcas in this area are in the process of developing some new hunting practices. As harsh as it sounds this needs to be discouraged even with extreme prejudice before something very bad happens. In North America, nothing like this is happening. Why are they attacking sailing vessels? This isn't "play." They're probing for food items. This certainly looks like hunting behavior. God help sailors if they figure out how to sink small sailing vessels. And make no mistake they are learning with each encounter. Killer whales are very intelligent.

Sailors on sail boats have been reporting attacks on their rudders for months by Orcas. Nothing new here, most sailors avoid that area if they can. Yes: the Orcas seem to find their rudders as a cool game to play with hitting (and, usually, destroying). The Orcas really have no idea that they just ruined a boat's means of steering. It's just a game to them. This poster is apparently unaware of the fairly long history of all this.

Smart Orca studying boat, while eyeing the humans. They Identify the rudder as a key ‘fin’ that can disable the boat. Like Grizzly bear. Orca, are also named “whale-killers”, and not without cause. They are huge wild predators. So whether playing or hunting during these encounters. It is moot. Either way it is life-threatening behavior to the humans onboard the boat if they disable the rudder at sea. I wonder if an underwater speaker could be lowered into the water for emitting painful sounds that would stop this behavior without physically harming the “whale-killer” (Orca).
