These comments from certain people are amazing, "They weren't aggressive to the people on the boat, maybe they thought it was food ( my personal favorite)" What if they had damaged the boat enough to sink it? There's no record of them attacking humans in open water but this behavior also just started, nobody knows what wild animals will do or when.

Ever thought of just tapping on the S/S rudder posts with a metal work hammer. Acoustics would drive them away. Being a sitting duck is just not good seamanship. Start engine, generator, bow thruster all electronics and make as much noise as you can. I was taught this as a 15 year old, now 50 years later still applies. BTW , these attacks by Orca’s only happen in this area. Why? Spanish Tuna Fish farms between Cadiz and Tarifa. Go inside them and you should be OK. It’s their Ocean, not ours, but we shouldn’t be enemies. Just train them. I came thru from Rota last week no probs now in Gibralter.

Precisely what the nautical authorities advise is to turn off all the underwater acoustic instrumentation (probe, sonar, etc.), put the rudder on the track and stop the boat's engine, even lower the sails. Do not show yourself overboard and in case of losing the rudder request towing. Never overexcite killer whales with acoustic aggressions, it is extremely dangerous. We are a toy for them. These attacks were already being carried out in areas of the west of the Iberian Peninsula before, surely in other areas as well. Greetings from Cádiz, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.

From the footage it was clear to see there was an orca calf present, and they would generally be closely associated with an adult female (usually its mother). Sometimes calves and young juveniles will be cared for by extended family members, but one of that age it would be too far from its mother. It is difficult to judge size from the footage you presented but I would not describe as 3 juvenille orca. Perhaps the rest of the pod was not too far away or you encountered an overly protective mother, or a mother using this oportunity to model hunting technique to its offspring. Whatever is going on It certainly appears to be becoming an issue.....glad to see you were able to recover.

Sadly I think this is going to end up with this pod of Orcas getting shot. That's what Robin Knox Johnston did to a shark that was stopping him repairing a sprung plank on Suhaili. I keep mentioning this but the Robertson family's wooden yacht was rammed and sunk in the Pacific by Orcas in the 1970s. The family survived drifting in their dinghy for over a month. Their book is called "Survive the Savage Sea"

Install a spiked steel or aluminum alloy roller cylinder (1.5 inch round or square stock) on the trailing edge of the rudder between two flat stock pieces bolted to the upper and lower edges of the rudder. Rows of three inch bolts sharpened to a point on one end threaded into the cylinder should make the rudders "unpalatable". It should also be easy to unbolt the roller cylinder from the upper and lower mounts if you're not traveling in the area of these stupid, aggressive Orca or if/when they finally figure out that sailboats are not a good target for "play", whale hunting instruction, or whatever other reason is causing this particular pod to aggressively hunt and damage sailboats.

I wonder if painting large menacing eyes each side of rudder/casket would make them think twice. Artisanal fishermen used to paint those eyes on each side of their boats for protection they said. Or it will not work, if they are 'demented' as you say, anything with shape and behaviour of their prey may attract them anyway. So far we can only speculate...

Killer whales are sensitive to sound frequencies. I have to imagine equipping a boat with a hydrophone/transmitter and sending a squelch or other unpleasant sounds through it might help hinder/deter attacks like this. Wonder if anyone has tried this? Nobody wants to hurt them, but if one of those skegless rudders gets ripped out, the boat is going down. It's happened before. Then you're looking at a possible life or death situation. Gotta come up with a good defensive solution to this, as each attack they get away with encourages the behavior.

Orcas learn from one another. Scientists have come up with a theory, that these incidents may be hunting training sessions for the young ones in the absence of live prey like the tuna living near the surface, which have nearly vanished or fled to deeper waters. The theory is that one adult at some point came up with this concept of 'hunting' yachts and started teaching it to the others and it has spread to other groups. Nature is magnificent - it moves in fantastic and mysterious ways that we can not always predict or fathom. Safe travels.

I was thinking since some of this incidents are attacking and chewing rotors, perhaps the orcas are associating this with fins of enemy pods or animals they are recognizing as a threat, mainly I am referring to the shape of the rotors or fins or stabilizers of the boats that resemble in shape to theirs only bigger and that is why they get into a trace to relentlessly stack the boats to neutralize them. Killing by association.

The attack may be for the same reason that the Moby Dick story was recorded. Early sailing ships used a cable to strengthen the bow spirit. This cable was attached to the forward underside of the hull, possibly setting up a vibration in the water irritating the sea life. By the looks of those keels, I would not be surprised if a vibration is going on. The early sailing ships turned to chains for their bow spirits. A large wale really sank a large sailing ship, hence the story Moby Dick was written

@@aparks8244 Yes you can look it up on google quickly because it’s a well known fact among scientists and sailors/fishers who have a lot of experience around Orca. Also if you do look it up you will see the long history we have getting along with orca. Back before fisherman industry became so commercialized Orca would alert fishermen of bigger sperm whales that we couldn’t see below or at night and when we would kill them for their brain oil the orca would just take the liver as payment. That’s why they are nicknamed killer whales which really was whale killers translated from another language. Orca have similar brains to human and understand things we probably can’t imagine. I think these are just juveniles playing not realizing the potential danger because they are so young. Now if they aren’t juveniles and I’m wrong it could be an adult teaching younger orca how to hunt large prey just for practice but they all look really small and are exposing their bellies a lot in a way which I do believe suggests playfulness. It is unfortunate that the people on board had to go through it as regardless of our history with them, it would still be scary. Hopefully insurance will help with the damages as well.

Orcas bash against ice floes in order to tip them up and get seals into the water. They then eat the seals. This seems worryingly similar. No animal puts this much energy into something without a good reward in sight. Is there a case for putting the propellor on? It seems possible that would deter them.

My suggestion was for the government of Spain, their orca research organization was to place several different large platforms of fiber glass, attached to buoys out in the oceans there.
