🤖 Killer Robots: Why US Police Are Now Using Them

Are you convinced we're living in a cyberpunk dystopia yet?
Military use of attack robots (drones) have been around for quite some time now, the first recorded drone strike was on November 3, 2002, by the CIA killing six targets suspected of participating in al Qaeda. So robots killing humans isn't a new thing, but they are relatively new for domestic use in police forces. The first ever police use of a robot to carry out deadly force was in 2016. The robot was actually the same one used by SFPD for bomb disposal and other tasks, if you don't know that story it's pretty crazy. It involves the stealing of undergarments, military discharges, racially charged protest and one of the deadliest police shootings in American history, resulting in the killing of 5 officers and wounding 9 others.
It just makes me think that more and more use of robotics is going to be the norm whether we like it or not, I definitely can see a Chappie like future where robots are used almost exclusively for more dangerous jobs. I would absolutely love to live in a world where a military and police force isn't even necessary as people treat one another with kindness and respect, working together towards a united future where collaboration is the obvious choice for everyone involved as that provides the greatest benefit for everyone. Sadly this is not the reality we live in, most if not all aspects of our lives is built upon the foundational elements of violence, even if that foundation is mostly veiled from our immediate view.
We all know that there will be people doing bad things, putting innocent peoples lives at risk, it would be nice to be able to not have to face that danger with a potential loss of life, I think robots could have a place in those situations, where you've exhausted every other avenue. I don't see a huge difference between a gun and a robot, both are extensions and tools that an officer can use to their advantage. It's one thing if these robots are making their own decisions but at least for now they're still being controlled by humans. I think the next step will be AI implementation to where some or a lot of the decision making will be left up to the robots, to me that's more of a gray area where it's less of a tool and more of a separate entity entirely.
On the other hand is this a slippery slope? Sure allow robots for the most extreme scenarios but could that trickle down to being used for other things, or what happens when AI becomes more prevalent, is this providing a way for human decisions to be turned over to inhuman devices at a faster pace? Another huge question is the further "militarization" of our police forces, should be concerned about this, or is this just a natural reaction to a seemingly more armed populace? What about gun control is that a factor in here as well? I don't know the answers to these questions but it is interesting to see the future unfold in ways that were only once plots from 80's sci-fi action movies.

Why put another human at risk to take out a criminal. I think these are great options when used appropriately and legally.

I agree 👍 My only concern is abuse of this power from higher up.

That's actually part of the plot in Chappie, the bots were internally hacked to wreak havoc 👍 cybersecurity is going to play a huge role in the future (it already does now). Thanks man!

Yes, that is a concern, each step we take that less humans are involved the easier it is to execute things that would otherwise induce an empathic response. Also a step closer to skynet 😂

🤣😂😅 slippery slope, interesting video HT\\LL. My opinion of the future changes all the time. The world is so complex, and technological innovation is a natural progression. Thanks for your expose on this matter. Take care man. 👍

Nothing like a domestic bombing from the state on an apartment killing 11 civilians

Obama once joked about sending drones to any guy that messes with his daughters, I don't think there has been a domestic recording of one happening yet, but when that day comes I won't be surprised. Collateral damage is not so easily turned a blind eye to when it's your own citizens. The future is going to be wild and dark.

Now statesmen don't even have to question their conscience to enact force upon you, just follow orders with a machine.

😂 I agree, just have concerns over the growing use and extension of power over citizens.
