Kids WB: The Quintessential Cartoon Block - Thoughtblot

Ойын-сауық

Time-Warner's attempt to take down Fox Kids resulted in Kids' WB - a classic after-school and Saturday morning cartoon block of the late 90s and early 2000s. Here, we take a look at the block's history on television, combined with my personal memories and experiences.
Thoughtblots are a series of short, personal, video essays on a variety of media topics.

My sister and I grew up with most of these shows. It sure does bring back a lot of memories. We didn't watch it much in the late 90s, and we didn't watch it in the early 2000s, since we were getting older, but we were there in the beginning. Thanks for this trip down memory lane.

This was so well made! Great job man! I was honestly obsessed with KidsWB during my childhood days. The shows were just so perfect. And that's so cool that you won something from those sweepstakes. I remember wanting to get into those sweepstakes but I didn't know how to do them since they seemed kind of complicated.

You ever had a video on KZread resonate with you so much ? This is what this video just did for me. Thank you for explaining the fondest years of my childhood. I was born in June of 96, so 99-2003 was my tv years. Between WWF/WWE and cartoons I had my eyes glued to the TV. Also most shows that you listed from kids WB is on HBO Max now. So we can go back and have those greats shows

The difference between cartoons and anime and how each handles serialisation is quite fascinating. Western networks are still pretty allergic to it. Even cartoons with larger stories to tell won't do a singular, ongoing plot across 40-60 episodes with constant cliffhangers. No, most episodes are their own thing and from time to time they'll sprinkle some overarching elements here and there. Networks believe more episodic content is easier to get into and therefore will result in more viewers and income. Anime, on the other hand, utilises serialisation as its selling point. Viewers get hooked and keep tuning in every week. And, once the season is over, they'll purchase the source material (manga or light novel) and continue the story there. Both want to make money (duh) but go about it in completely different ways.

Dude! I was the Director of Animation for Kids' WB for most of the time it was on air. I worked on all the promos in between. (you can see a lot on my channel). Anyway- what an excellent retrospective! I thoroughly enjoyed hearing your stories! Especially the contest winning one- I remember working on those spots and adding in the green logos!! I couldn't help thinking- those poor suckers haha! But seriously- this really took me back, thanks for the memories!

what is your discord channel? I'm not on there too often, but as I make progress with my Maya to Unreal engine conversion of the Kids' WB Backlot, I've been using that more and more as a resource. I always enjoy talking about the Kids' WB days... @@TopTower

When I was 8, they had a competition for kids to draw their own Pokemon cards for either the release of Ruby/Sapphire or the start of the Pokemon Advanced season. I remember I sent in my Treecko drawing online I believe, didn't hear back, and then months later was surprised with a package that had a huge inflatable chair with a bunch of Kids WB characters on it, a giant working cardboard radio, a giant working cardboard telephone, and a pack of 5 Pokemon cards that had all of the 5 grand prize winners' drawings. I think I must have gotten a runner up prize because I don't believe my Treecko had been selected as the winner, but still one of the fondest memories of my life if I'm being honest. I had never won anything before, and to know that they had liked my drawing enough to send me a huge prize, as a kid that lived by drawing my own Pokemon characters, was insane.

It's worth noting ... that shows "jumping ship" and/or being gutted from Fox Kids to Kids' Wb, is a reason why/how Kwb got better. 😔

Kids WB is one of the channels I miss the most! I grew up watching all those great shows during the 90's and probably the show I watched the most was Pokémon! Those original seasons were so great and have alot of memories with them and I'm still a fan to this day! Though I watched alot of different channels as a kid, my TV was usually on Kids WB the most!

"Cartoons" and "Animation" are general terms. At the the same time "Cartoons" are more comedic, As "Animated Series" were more serious.

5:23 Huh, of all the takes I've heard about Kero, let alone the Nelvana dub of Kero, the last thing I ever expected anyone to say about him was being "creepy" Though, I'm not one to talk, I was afraid of my own shadow back then.

Technically you are correct, since CardCaptors is the English version of Cardcaptor Sakura, with lots of heavy editing to the original Japanese content.

@@TopTower It was a heavily butchered adaptation that made it no longer the same show. Even by the standards of the time.
