I whole-heartedly agree with the need for a lower spec car with more power. Having decent power is not merely a nice add-on, it changes the driving experience completely. These cars are, after all, no longer light-weight like little cars were 30 years ago.

Just bought this car and I absolutely love it.Thankfully Kia recognise a gap in the market for a small car for a mature lady who doesn't like driving hairdryers 😊

I've had the GT 5 speed manual turbo for the last month and a half in Sydney and it's been truly a delight to drive, incredibly nimble and very capable at higher speeds - recommended

Finally an updated review on Picanto. Rented a basic model a year ago 😂 and on the highway 🛣️ it was quite a task but didn't disappoint

The kia piccanto & Hyundai i10 are both terrific city cars & great value for money..having owned the 2nd generation i10 the car when driving feels like you're inside a car a class above . Both cars are now possibly the best 2 city cars on the market 👌 great review as always 👍

Good little cars - but new car prices in general have gone crazy

4:00 'it struggles on highway speeds'. What speeds is she talking about? 200mph? I have the 1 litre and its fine on the motorway driving 80mph all day long. I've done 700 mile trips in a day in the picanto with the 1 litre non turbo engine with no issues. Top speed is 105mph which is plenty quick enough for the highway. Acceleration could be quicker but other drivers are almost always in your way anyway. Sure, more power is nice but the base engine gets the job done and is extremely frugal too. It irritates me to no end when reviewers talk about the lower end engines like they are unusable. And yes, i absolutely LOVE this car.

My wife has the pre facelift version, it is a big hoot this car (so the 100/101 hp version). I have owned Peugeot, Citroen and Renault GT(i)'s and drive nowadays a Focus IV 182 HP but this Picanto puts everythime a big smile on my face. I find the engine also on motorway speeds of 70-90 mph quit, the only thing that makes to much noise are the tyres but overal the car is not to loud and has a surpringly comfortable ride. Until now we also had not any troubles with it, just driving from service interval to service interval as with our earlier owned Kia's.

When my 2013 Citroën C1 needs replacing, a used one of these will likely take its place - it appears to me to be the best all-rounder in the class at the moment.

We have this model in black, it is a great little car, and I’ve achieved 62mpg at a constant 70 mph on trip to Cornwall from midlands, plenty of oomph but like review mentioned could do with a 6 speed box

Just bought my GT-Line S model; so much fun! The fuel economy is particularly pleasing being a Yorkshire man (and for those of you who don't know what I mean by that statement; a Yorkshire man is like a Scottish man except not as generous with their money, in fact, the new pound coin was made the shape it was to allow a spanner to be used to prize it out of a Yorkshire man's hand!). The down side of the car is that nose; with all those little nooks and bits, it's a nightmare to wash and despite what she says, the boot DOES NOT have a split level in this version

I have one. A fabulous little car…..the 7 year warranty tells you all you need to know about confidence in their build.

Same, my model is the 51Kw 69HP it isnt so bad up to 40 mph then you can feel it's only a 1L 3 banger but other than that solid car.

My pal Linda has one of around the same year as yours. I was surprised that the brakes didn't much impress Rebecca on this test. I drove my pal's car home from a funeral for her, when she boke a heel on her shoe and found the brakes to be very strong indeed, so much so that I had to be careful not to stand on the pedal too vigorously, as I'd done initially. Perhaps the newer models use harder brake pad compound.

@@michaelarchangel1163 yeah 🤣, after I got mine I slammed the brakes from rough estimate of 30mph it impressed me stopped very fast. Kia brakes are usually fairly good though

@@michaelarchangel1163 How can you compare a 2012 car with this 2022 version? That's an entirely different model.... They don't feel the same AT ALL. I have a 2018 Picanto, brakes are just fine, but had borrowed the new Picanto last year when mine needed repair (someone's door against my door) and the braking was a bit more vague and you needed to press harder so I understand Rebecca on this.

Does Kia UK offer an auto on Picanto?

Let’s hope they have improved the stereo speakers as the pics to I had did have 6 speakers but was unforgivingly shocking

Perfect little baby premium car !

Just bought i10 for my wife. Great little car. Basically the same as this Kia. We chose i10 because sales personel was more friendly and responsive. Either way Picanto and i10 are both perfect for narrow city center streets.

Although almost the same, I - 10 Hy is slightly bigger, both in lenght and in width, and slightly heavier, and less warranty, only 5 yrs !

@@victormarian7889 Warranty doesn't play much of a role in our case. My darling previously had Citroen C3 model year 2002. That's right. The little car got through 20 years with no problem what so ever. A french car, can you imagine. I bet this little Hyundai will last even longer.

@@Tamsetki coincidence ? my first was the Lemon C - 1, although that was basically a Toyota, the double chevron proved not only reliable but also very economical !

how does it handle speed bumps?

The 1.0 turbo can be remapped/ECU to add 40bhp, so you are gaining 40% extra power over standard. This will bring down the 0-60 from 9.9 to 7.5 - 8 seconds. Making it a warm hatch. 7 year warranty, but obviously if the engine or gearbox blows up then they won't cover. Same engine is in Rio at 120bhp, so it can easily cope with that much increase.

@@eduframept ​ I highly doubt KIA will cover your engine or gearbox if you have messed with your ECU.

My car is identical to this one. My only significant criticism is that the clutch grabs rather suddenly, so you have to lift the pedal fairly gradually - the first time I started it I stalled. I have also had it sound an alarm for no obvious reason when I open the door to get in. It is certainly an improvement on my previous car, an Up! TSI turbo.

I have a 2018 spec Picanto and never experienced this. The clutch is really docile. So I guess it's the newer one that has this. I had borrowed a new one at the dealer for 2 days when they fixed my door that someone hit with their door when it was windy, and did notice a different feel, but the clutch was not bothersome in any way.

The KIA Picanto is a great car especially in GT line spec. I think in standard spec. though the Suzuki Swift is a better car than a standard Picanto due to a more powerful 4 cylinder engine including mild hybrid tech. The Picanto is still a very good car and easily far superior to the VW Polo, Ford Fiesta or French equivalents due to superior reliability and value for money.

I have the 99bhp turbo version and i can honestly say i've never got anywhere near 50mpg in mine, tends to average out at about 40. Plus, it says in the video that they scream a bit at motorway speeds, mine does 2500 rpm at 70mph......the gearing is quite tall on these and so really doesn't need a sixth gear in my opinion.

Nice one Rebecca, this car looks like a real hoot on the road and seems pretty good value as well. A great amount of kit and decent aftercare make it a must test drive for a city car, more so for those of us who do not have access to at home charging of an EV. Insurance 'should' in theory be reasonable compared to some options for younger drivers but I admit that I've not checked (I'm getting on a bit). If I'm honest though, if I was in the market I'm not sure if I'd consider paying more for the new Fabia but I'm not sure if that has the same level of kit. I guess they would both deserve a test drive. I have to agree that the turbo engine Kia would be my preference from the model range for those additional smiles per miles.

Thanks for the review. What I'd like to know is the quality of the AMT transmission? Is it fluent or do you feel every shift? And if it's the latter, do you feel the shift changes a lot or are they hardly noticeable? Thanks!

We have just bought a 2018 XLine S . We wanted a four door replacement for our 2 door 108. Lovely looking car, with a good spec, but the drive is far fermer then the Peugeot. You feel every bump in the road.

Kind of harsh to expect more acceleration from such a small engine with the amount of HP. 14 seconds isn't terrible. There have been cars that took 20 seconds.

Wish we got these in the USA. The only small car we have left is the Mitsubishi Mirage.

Good to see an affordable auto reviewed, Rebecca. Now the Fiesta will be no more there will be those who baulk at paying Ford's prices for its future models. The Times ran a news piece today [paywall] and readers' comments were predictable.

Good review overall, especially as the Picanto is just what everyone should be driving to save the planet. Why oh why do reviewers always look at the top spec car? It is not the one that most people will be interested in, so why not review the level 3 model? I know, cos it isn't flash and fast. Come on CG get real about secs and choose the one most likely to be sold and people can be clear what their car is going to drive like, not the sporty cool one that is too expensive.

Don't worry about that. The top-spec feels the same as the base model in terms of driving.

67 hp is fine for everyday driving. Power - less is more......

Always great to hear and see Rebecca. Love the ponytail look.... i would happily accept all 5' 4.5" of her. 👍😇😍 As for the ride, it wouldn't sell much on this side of the pond. too small, too weak, hardly anyone wants to row gears. keep the car, but send over Rebecca.....😉🤣🤗

A fun car, I had one for 5 years, I am 6 feet. It has enough room in the boot to hold 2 Asda bags only. No use for a holiday for 2, where can you put a suitcase? The back brakes using the hand break jam. The Picanto is noisy, it creaks and its heater creaks in the winter as the hot air heats the cabin. Better to buy a Corsa F, better value. Same insurance, large boot, no irritating noises.

If Kia & Hyundai truly use the same 'stuff' why the difference in warranty? For the second time in 18 months we've been loaned a supposedly identical Hyundai after an idiot ran into the back of our Kia, it wasn't, not even close. All round quality was much lower, the gearing/gearbox ratio/feel was poorer & engine flatter, all from a car that was supposed to be identical. I'm not talking the same car both times here & I do know spec differences in the ranges before anyone jumps in, these are always reported to be the same car. Don't believe it. Unless the Kia workforce is just that much better? Go on tell me they're the same too 😂

Well as my Fiesta is officially 4 years old and still with less than 10K on the clock, this could ideally be its replacement , if I can have a GTS with an auto-box (CVT) as a replacement Fiesta Mild Hybrid is topping out at almost £10K more in cost price and I for one am looking at a cheaper car.

Ok, so who actually watched this for the Picanto?❤

the automatic version is painfully slow, we have the 1.2 liter version with 82 PS and automatic and this gearbox takes away all the agility

you need to service it dude. common problem with picanto AT here is the ECU. when one of the capacitor blows up it goes into limp mode, locking the gear at the 3rd gear, hence the slowness. luckily my country gets several experts able to solve it, have yet to see the problem recurring.

@@glowiever no, I don't think that's the problem here. It's still very new and it doesn't lock at the 3rd, it runs till top speed. What I meant is: the 0-100 km/h acceleration of the AT compared to the manual gearbox is about 3 seconds slower. I just say it, because one might be disappointed if it wasn't tested before buying or if you just tested the manual version. It's getting better with time because the gearbox learns with the first couple of kilometers you drive, the gear changes get smoother also. The book says it and I also noticed it with mine. Mine now has 3000 km on the clock.

Just don't see them on the roads.
