Kia Hyundai 2.0L P0017 Code

I’ve ran across this issue a few times now and just wanted to share a quick video of something to look out for if you have one of these 2.0L engines in your shop setting a P0017. A scope and in cylinder waveform makes this very fast easy to diagnose.

Just diagnosed this today. Thanks to this video!! I was scratching my head but I took the valve cover off and attempted to turn the exhaust cam independent of the sprocket, and sure enough it moved on its own while chain and sprocket remain in place! Thanks for this video!!!

I think I'm chasing the same thing on a 3.8 kia. How much were you able to move the cam?

@@kylewilhelm9397 the cam was free to move as much as I would have wanted it to. All while the sprocket and chain remain fixed. All I did was grab it with channel locks and it moved by itself. The locking pin inside the cam had done exactly what this video shows, backed all the way into the cam. A new sprocket fixed the issue however on the car I was working on, damage had already been done to the valves. They opted not to spend the money on a head job and the car is still sittting. Also getting the pin out of the cam was no easy task!

It's a Faulty design. The Camshaft Dowl Hole should not be drilled that deep. Even if the Dowl wiggles out. It shouldn't have that much play to back all the way into the cam shaft. Place a small spacer in there and it will never happen again

So basically an expensive fix. Thank you sir. And here I was cleaning solenoids and trying other things. We'll have to wait on this one. My wife is a heavy user of her car as she drives to appointments all day. Is this a problem? Thanks.

Can you tell the cam actuator sprocket is loose before you take it off?

Hello, I have a kia forte 2019, with the same problem and with the same code p0017, it changes the timing chain, sprockets, oil pump, and it still does not start, and the code p0017 still appears

It is possible that the valve is damage? My question is, do these engines damage valves?

@@autodiagyt I've seen this on a 3.3V6 SantaFe...not easy to diagnose the first time around since phaser is in time but camshaft is out of time lol! I used a mig welder to get the pin remains out of the camshaft. Junk quality on these engines!

@@autodiagyt Not that everyone has one but I think I would try a dent puller stud rather than a slag spitter first. The nail would give you a good pulling point with the slide hammer. Just an idea, haven't tried it yet myself. 😉
