Hey quick question for ivan, why not replace the fuel pump too if the oil smells terribly like gas? I understand it wasn't the main concern but if that fuel pump is leaking into the oil and causing a rich condition couldn't that clog the cat?

Ivan, Great video and diagnosis - thank you! Based on the code you got at first I would have been convinced it was a TPS/PPS issue. Great work on your part to find the actual issue! BTW I have my late wife's 2019 Kia Soul 2.0L. Only 26K miles - so far no issues. Paul (in MA)
I love your videos Ivan as always. You inspire me to be the best Mechanic i can be, I look forward to being able to buy a transducer kit in the next couple weeks.
Your skills are really getting polished Mr.ivan.good luck
Awesome diagnosis as usual but there is a recall on those cats so they might have got one for free at the dealer unless it already had the recall done some time ago. When it sounds muffled like that and you have a hard brake pedal from no vacuum go right for a restricted exhaust. Nice job as usual getting to the problem quickly.
Ivan very generous of you giving away a pressure transducer! Great video as always!
I have a fluke pv350 that I have had for a very long time and it still works great , new ones are very expensive and I have heard they are not as good for scope use . If my transducer fails i would not hesitate to buy yours , very fair price and seems to work awesome 👍

The lesson is you need to know how to use a scope. And go buy a PHAD pressure transducer. I used mine just the other day on a Nissan Frontier. After the other tech couldn't say yes or no after removing the oxygen sensor I went in and put my PHAD pressure transducer in cylinder. And had 30 psi in the exhaust pocket. Took me 10 minutes.

Good diagnosis there. These kia souls that have the 1.6 L are notorious for having clogged converters because they have an oil consumption problem. I I have seen where you can do an oil change then put 1,000 miles on and be over a quart low on the dipstick, with no signs of oil burning.

Thank you for this video. It actually helped me diagnose my own kia soul. Ty
I figured that was the problem. I had a 1966 Mustang that did the same thing. Took it to my brothers shop and he had me accelerate while he went to the rear and put his hand over the tail pipe. No pressure, took the muffler off, opened it up and sure enough a baffle broke in the muffler and blocked it. Replaced the muffler and back to racing around town, and did not have no fancy equipment in the sixties. lol
Nice job my friend. Guess I gotta get myself on that list

Ivan good find! Although I have always been told, "Catalytic Converters don't Die, they are Killed." Perhaps there's still other issues such as Fuel Trims pegged out dumping extra fuel. That would explain why the Spark Plugs are black and the continuous excessive fuel burning out the Catalytic Converter.

Nice diag! Had a kinda similar case last week. 2018 volkswagen polo HPFP was leaking gas to crankcase and eventually customer just drove the car even when CEL was on for weeks. You need to sell Eric "O" a transducer at twice the price. I do have a question, if the oil smelled of fuel did you mention that to the technician, and did they replace the high-pressure pump? I am only a keyboard follower and Diy guy but following you and Eric's diags makes me think that not fixing the fuel problem can only destroy another CAT.
@dans_Learning_Curve
2 жыл бұрын
Same position as you and had the exact same thought. Cat got killed because of mixture being rich because of the high pressure fuel pump pushing fuel into the crankcase. If the pump is bad, another cat is going to be a victim very soon. Interested to hear others opinions.

very good video, thank you
a clean car is a happy one
Nice work 👏
Nice...and quick. So, do you have boroscope to made this episode complete.
My guess is low fuel pressure or clogged up intake or maybe it's been running rough for so long that the oil is for the petrol and is fooling the O2 sensors into thinking the engines running way too rich or another thought is cylinder 4 is misfiring and clogged up the cat
I got my transducer before Christmas so I’m set.
Ivan: You have probably gone through it before but I'd like to see a video on the O-scope wave form for the pressure transducer and what to look for.

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics fair point. I just meant when you were showing the PID's while it was running and trying to rev it. The O2 wasn't great but was reading something whereas the downstream didn't move the whole time. My only logic was that ofcourse it wouldn't move if the cat was as choked out as it ended up being. P.S. Once you have a pressure transducer. Can you see any use for a pulse generator?
Hi, have a issue with my Kia soul. Car start but when coming to a stop. Was able to nearer it down to a power issue. On throttle body connector I get voltage on meter but when using a test light only 1 turns on burly the other 2 no light on test light. So you think ecm can be bad and needs to be replaced. I have replaced nearly everything on this car except the transmission or or engine or head gasket.
Nice work Ivan, p transducer shines once again! ( it’s in my bucket list). I mentioned this before, but just for poops and smiles, sometime You come across this situation again, throw an old school vacuum gauge on somewhere and note the readings. Should start out at full vac and gradually drop off relative to restriction severity! It does work but to be honest I’ve never tried it on newer vehicles!

My friends 2000 Honda Accord had about 185 K and wouldn't go over 25 MPH . The upstream oxygen sensor on the 4 cylinder is right in front . I removed it and put the vacuum gauge on it . I think at 2000 rpm there was very little vacuum . I got a Walker CARB approved CAT for use in N.Y. from Rock Auto .
@brianw8963
2 жыл бұрын
You hook the vacuum gauge to a vacuum line on the engine Bill, not the exhaust. If a cat is restricted, it will produce pressure upstream from cat.
@billsmith2212
2 жыл бұрын
Brian W : I should have explained how I tested that more clearly . I did remove the O2 to allow the back pressure , in this case more than a normal engine , to escape . I believe I put the vacuum gauge on the PCV line and increased the RPM to about 2,000 . I think I only got about 2 lbs. or less of vacuum , due to the restricted CAT , which I think was original . The CAT was changed and fixed the issue . The engine is like an air pump and must have flow through . The back pressure reduced its ability to draw a vacuum , especially at 2,000 RPM . A volumetric efficiency test would also show a restriction . But I only have basic tools .
@brianw8963
2 жыл бұрын
If you hooked to pcv ( positive crankcase ventilation) Bill, that would not work, gotta be a vacuum line . Should get an initial reading of 18 - 22 and it would start dropping off as pressure builds in exhaust, but with the O2 sensor removed that would not occur.

@@brianw8963 Can you do the same test with a scan tool? Watch your manifold pressure and look for a drop? Ivan was showing low vacuum on his.
what model pico scope is that? or which is a good enough model for all that you do?
Do you pressure transducer work on an old verus?
You mentioned that there is fuel getting in the oil. Did replacing the catalytic converter fix this issue?
That’s a huge pressure spike. Never seen one that clogged. Simple solution is to add boost! :)
are compression and psi different ? as in why did the transducer not show cylinder compression ?
Have a case for you. 2011 Kia Sorento, 2.4L engine, had funky shift issues for some time (its my daughters vehicle) but then it got to where it has really poor acceleration, lack power especially on hills. My son-in-law put new spark plugs in it, did not help. I took vehicle home, checked compression, it was fine. Checked fuel pressure, it was okay. Everything checked out, no codes. Ended up pulling transmission and put in new torque converter, rebuilt one actually and replaced wiring harness as that is a known problem. Still had same behavior and still no codes. Went ahead and replaced throttle body which has the TPS built into it, still have problems, went through some transmission relearn procedures, seemed better but not great, this morning same problem and still no codes. Pulled fuel pump, looks pretty clean, almost looks new. Don't know what's going on and even more frustrating because not getting any codes.
Could this be confirmed by cranking to open the exhaust valve and sending compressed air into the exhaust stream? I closed the exhaust valve to diagnose a burned exhaust valve. Air came rushing out the exhaust. btw. It is a KIA, Killed In Action.
First time I seen a pressure transducer, can you explain it. If it just checks pressure in the cylinder couldn't you just use an old pressure gauge?
i thought it was tps related when you said peddle does nothing and assumed the tps was sending the wrong signal that didnt corelate with you throttle inputs which was then dumping fuel but i was wrong.could this even happen though?
What about the gas in the oil though?
Son of a Physicist becomes mechanic and designs and sells a pressure transducer. Yup. That's normal. BTW, your Dad might happen to know a particular Russian nuclear physicist at Jefferson lab. I've worked with him on several occasions. Every time I speak with him I hear that line from Ghostbusters in my head, "You never studied.". Good work. Any concern there might be a root cause to the CAT failing?
Hey Ivan I was just curious how did your giveaway go how did you do it on PayPal I didn't really understand how you had to do it so that's why I didn't enroll
What about the gas in the oil? Once the converter is installed, does that go away due to pressures? You didn't clarify that and I'm a dummy on this stuff.
What about the fuel smell in the oil?

2015 isn't very old but 150K miles is near end of a good life. So the interior beyond the driver's seat looks great yet the cars a problem waiting to happen if you bought it. Not bad repair for a high milage car, this is probably a country car with a lot of 50mph+ driving, but a car with this milage would not be my road trip car. You can go to online sights and do searches, move the milage slider to 150K, KIA was not significantly worse percentage wise but only 5% of cars were over 150K which is a reliability measure.
