I have a 2017 Kia optima that is a EF I think which means energy efficient. It's not a sports car but I like it I'm sure the hell hope I don't start having any problems I'm at 20,000 miles and so far it drives like a dream I bought it certified with 12,000 miles and I have the warranty that comes with it and I bought an additional warranty. Scotty just check the pcv value or change with brand new one and check it stops burning oil. Because what i was experience before they had issue with PCV valve going bad even if it done only 1000 miles. And I'm not in the US but dealership in here are more useful and friendly with customers they even list the all common issues and they fix those free even when you out of the 7year warranty. It doesn't matter you needs an engine for company fault they do it gor you for free.

On my 2012 Kia Soul I travelled over 330,000km on it and had just about zero problem. The only problem I can remember was the alternator failing at around 280km which was only natural considering the mileage. It was the most problem-free car I have ever had driven. There's reason Kia is doing so great all over Europe.

I'm the 2nd owner of a 2011 (1st gen.) Kia Soul. The instrument cluster failed quickly, but fortunately there was still a short time frame of warranty left, so that repair was covered. I've now driven this Soul over 100,000 miles with reasonable normal maintenance. It still runs and drives super good, and still burns no oil. The only constant issues throughout this time is the radio won't power up about a quarter of the time, and maybe 1% of the time, the heat/AC fan won't work. Those issues have been consistent for years and have not gotten worse over time.

Having had two family members that had Kia's which both had serious engine and steering problems, in both cases Kia fought them tooth and nail to deny warranty coverage to actually repair the defective designs. Even if a car company offers a 100 year warranty but they refuse to honor the warranty or even acknowledge there is any problem, or when they do honor the warranty but the part they replace still has the same defect as the original part, then the whole "much better warranty" part of the equation gets tossed right out the window. Kia is the IKEA of the automotive world. They along with Hyundai focus mainly on styling, and flashy gadgetry but that comes at a sacrifice which is attention to reliability and/or foolproof design.

I agree with you. My wife's 06 Accord with 170,000 miles and 4-5,000 mile oil changes does not use any oil. Funny, I got scared with her car with so many miles so I bought a new Toyota RAV4 hybrid (when you could still get one a couple of years ago) but it sits in the driveway and I drive it once a week to keep it up. I can't pry the Accord away from her and I know why. My solution is to give it to one of my granddaughters when she gets a license. That will work, grandmas do anything for the grandchildren.

My 2014 Soul uses about a quart every 1000 miles or so. However, when I did a cross country road trip of about 1,200 miles, it didn't use a single drop. I had brought oil with me, expecting to have to top it up at least once, but it was still exactly on the full mark when I arrived. I'm still not sure why this would be - I guess it only consumes oil around town and not on the highway for some reason.

My guess is that it doesn't burn the oil until the oil gets broken down. In other words, it might not burn any oil for the first 3 or 4 thousand miles, but after that, as the oil breaks down (loses viscosity) it begins to burn. I've read several comments that point to this. It kinda makes sense, but obviously the design is flawed. Change the oil every 3k, and it might do very well.

  • @thepenultimateninja5797

@@Curt100 No it can't be that, it burns oil at a steady pace, no matter how recently the oil was changed (and I already do 3k oil changes, always have). I think the other commenter was right - it probably only burns oil only during the heating up phase, so it burns more over several short trips that on a long journey.

My thoughts exactly. The later gens seem to have more issues. I did driving school with a company that exclusively uses Souls, drives them forever, and the owner told me that 1st gen is great but after that there are some sketchy years. They all get a bad rep because of it. I have a 2010 that I just bought and am getting to know. Replacing things and listening to things. Inspection by a journeyman went great but I suspect he didn’t look as close as I’d like and so I’m trying to learn as much as I can to service this lil thing and hope it gives me some fun years. Great little car to drive. The electric ones are really fun to drive! But I’m not ready wallet wise or practicality wise to go electric as there aren’t a ton of charging stations yet where I am. Anyway. I pray for my little Soul and its eternal life 🙏😂

Had to perform the "oli test" twice (dealer performs oil change, seals dip stick, return to dealer after 1000-miles to witness oil level is below 1 quart). PIA to do, but at least they honored the warranty. Shoulda bought a Toyota.

However, I did switch to 5W-20 full synthetic a few oil changes ago and it started buring oil at a rate of one quart every ~1200 miles; it had been barely burning at all before. I switched back to a synthetic blend 5w-30 and now 1200 miles in it has maybe burned 1/4 a quart. It's been a good family vehicle with the 3rd row and all. However I'm wondering if we should sell it now that it's getting high mileage (for a Kia anyways) or risk it and see if we can get many more years out of it. Really don't want a car payment and car prices are through the roof. Though Carmax says they'll give us $10,600 for it and we paid $14,900 for it back in 2016 with 45k miles.

In 2020 she traded her in her 2014 for a 2020 GT Line Soul Turbo. Here it is October 2023, and we still get oil changes in both cars at 10,000 + miles and no oil leaks. We do only use synthetic oil in the cars so that might be why we don't have that problem. I did buy a third KIA in 2022 to go along with the Soul and the Optima but it doesn't burn any oil either. I had a 08 Sorento that I bought brand new I definitely agree with the warranty work that they don’t really want to back from the dealership. On mine the roof rack was assembled wrong and the rear bar was put in front of the rear stop. It probably wouldn’t have been a problem except the only way to remove the stops and move the bar behind it was to remove the whole roof rack. The screw for the stop was at the bottom of the bar. The dealership was pissed when I demanded they fix it so I could actually separate the bars farther than 10 inches. They told me you realize that’s a big job…..well yeah I do but you sold me a defective product so fix it. They were so mad they had to remove the window and headliner just to remove two screws it took them 3 weeks to get it done. At first they didn’t want to give me a rental car either so I had to call Kia and complain lol. They told me if I needed anymore warranty work to go to another dealer. Never bought another car from them again.

You speak truth! Nothing made the dealer and shop manager angier than warranty work. The biggest problem in their case was getting reimbursed by the manufacturer for the labor, parts and not making a profit while doing it...that's why they hated it! Their mechanics didn't work for free and parts obviously cost money. Then there's the fact that a ZERO profit "warranty work" car was now taking up both time and space in the repair bay. I read somewhere that dealers and manufacturers are basically at war, until a customer shows up...then it's both of them against you! (it's very true!)

Reliable car, comfortable enough, simple maintenance, but had weak interior door handles though. A 2010 Kia Soul+ with the 2.0l 4cyl. If you had Hondas , you'd be happier. My wife has an orange 09 Honda fit 5 sport , rides a little rough bc it's small. But it doesn't really feel cheap. Nothing has broken, it has 200k , and it's barely needed anything but maintenance,. My 5 spd accord has 231k and has barely needed anything besides maintenance, both still have the original clutch. They both just needed minor suspension work recently, like tie rod ends, and stabilizer links, but not till like 180k , and our roads suck, and they're both older cars and had the original suspension

Two things Scotty is not aware of, it's the Theta II motors only, 2.0, 2.0T, 2.4 and probably new 2.5L. All their GDI motors will need an intake cleaning at 15k, a combustion chamber cleaning at 50k miles due to PCV and GDI. The v6s and 1.6L motors are fine. But the biggest problem is dealers not supporting their warranty, that goes for any make.
