KHAOSAN ROAD, Bangkok: Food, Sights, Hostel & Thailand Travel Reflections

Hi everyone! This is episode seven of my Thailand series and the series finale. In this video, I return to the vibrant heart of Bangkok to uncover the allure of Khaosan Road (or Khao San Road). As one of the city's most iconic and notorious destinations, Khaosan Road beckons with its pulsating energy, drawing in backpackers and thrill-seekers from across the globe.
I dive headfirst into the sensory feast that is Khaosan Road. Braving the exotic offerings of street vendors, I take on the ultimate dare - tasting a scorpion. This attracts some attention and curious stares of onlookers that add to the thrill of the experience. I paid 50 Thai Baht (conversion: 1 British Pound = c. 45 Thai Baht) for the scorpion. Would you ever eat a scorpion? Some of the other options from the street vendor included centipedes and spiders. Definitely not your everyday snacks these!
The scorpion was quite small and did not satisfy my appetite, so I decide to buy a pork skewer for 20 Thai Baht. I then walk along the bustling street and notice several street stands selling everything from clothes, jewellery, henna tattoos, alcohol and smoothies.
I purchase a refreshing dragon fruit smoothie at one of the smoothie stands, and finally figure out the mysterious fig-like taste I experienced in a smoothie I had in Pattaya. I actually forgot to pay for the smoothie so the street vendor called me back - an honest mistake but I was quite embarrassed! After getting some vitamins in my system, I venture further down Khaosan Road and engage with a few friendly locals who sell beer, henna tattoos and tuk-tuk rides.
As twilight descends and the night starts to show its head, I walk back to my hostel and talk about my travel plans for 2024, including why I visited Thailand for such a short series. At the hostel, I give a brief tour of my room and try out another snack that I bought from a 7Eleven.
In the final part of the vlog, I go for an evening stroll and ponder the age-old question - should you visit Thailand? I offer some real, honest food for thought here.
I hope you enjoyed this video and this series in Thailand! If you haven't done it yet, please hit the LIKE and SUBSCRIBE videos and leave a COMMENT for me in the comment section.
Happy exploring! See you soon :)
Willie

Thanks my friend, always a huge pleasure hearing from you. Trust me, I was very nervous about that scorpion! As for B&H, that is a great shout. I did go to Sarajevo and Mostar in 2018 and absolutely loved it. Maybe a bigger trip can be arranged. Stay safe brother!

Brave man eating that scorpion 😂 Bangkok looks just as buzzing as I'd expected it would. 600 THB is about a third of what I'm paying to share in a dorm 😂 yeah, Pattaya doesn't interest me in the slightest. Thailand is in my top 5 countries, definitely looking forward to going back 🇹🇭

Long time visitor to Thailand here, so a little friendly advice: As far as I can tell, you're a Male, so you say: KHOB KHUN KRAB. Not: KHOB KHUN KHA, which is the polite form for Females to say. no wonder they're smiling at you so much! Thais are truly polite and friendly, so they wouldn't say anything. And please don't bargain for food (and massages, etc) speciially when prices are displayed. ~We travellers and tourists are so rich compared to average working Thais, it could be seen as rude and rather colonial. ~By all means, bargain for clothes and souvenirs . Start at about a third off and go down in small increments, gently, and be flexible, prepared to come back up if needed: t's a playful exchange to reach a cordial agreement, not an exercise in forcing someone to obey your will! Take a moment to consider the amounts you're really competing for. I'm going back soon : I miss Thailand so much!

Thank you, Marisa. As you said, no one corrected me so I just continued with the Thai phrase I was told. At least I made the effort to engage in their language. But I'm not going to lose too much sleep over it, if you know what I mean. If you watch some of my other Thailand videos, you will see that I concur with you regarding food prices and I even tip the food sellers in the local areas. However, I disagree with you regarding food / street snacks in the tourist areas. You should absolutely bargain with them. As well as taxi drivers and tuk-tuk drivers. Yes, the price differential might not break the bank, but if you travel as much as I do, all your pennies count. It is also about the principle - anyone who thinks they are friendly without a financial motive is delusional. Not to mention the various scams across Bangkok in particular. Any economic transaction has a buyer and a seller and both parties should be happy. Hope you get to Thailand soon again!

Really enjoyed seeing the market place; But there is no way I would eat any of those bugs, snakes, etc: I guess New Zealand is just too far away from England for you Willy. The two Islands are about the size of Britain. So doesn't take long to see much of the country. Well be interested as to where you choose next time. Safe journey home: Kiwi from Virginia.

Hi Swanoaks, yes I certainly had to muster up the guts to try that scorpion. It was the smallest of the "food" items and I think I would have struggled with the bigger ones like the centipede. New Zealand is certainly on my bucket list and perhaps I should visit sooner rather than later. Thanks for all your continued support and encouragement!

Hi Sheila! Thanks for always watching and engaging. I agree with you that Thailand is not everyone's cup of tea. Clearly judging by my viewing numbers, that is certainly the case amongst most of my subscribers! But i learned valuable lessons on this recce trip. Probably the most valuable one is that I can do non-stop filming for three days, but then need one day's rest where I do no filming and editing and then another day for the editing. So 4/5 KZread days and 1/5 non-KZread days, if that makes sense. Definitely have a lot of travel plans for the sabbatical, but hopefully a few quick trips before then too! Watch this space :)
