KHAN - Space Shanty [1972]

KHAN
Formed in London, UK, in 1971 - Disbanded in 1972
The initial line-up consisted of keyboard player Dave Stewart, guitarist Steve Hillage, bassist Nick Greenwood and drummer Pip PYLE. Before recording their one and only album, Pyle moved on to GONG and was replaced by Eric Peachy (ex-DR. K's BLUES BAND). The group disbanded after the release of the album in 1972.
"Space Shanty" is made up of six ambitious tracks composed almost entirely by Hillage. The album is particularly dominated by Hillage's spacey/bluesy guitar and Stewart's effervescent Hammond play. The band frequently breaks out into extended instrumental freak outs, either soloing or engaging in formidable guitar/organ interplay. This album is a fine sample of early Canterbury/bluesy space rock. A must-have for Canterbury fans, and not merely for its historical value. [progarchives.com]

Steve is still as good as ever & totally in charge when he played on this LP. Nice as hell to hear him play again as he used to as i heard his track with James La brie covering the old King Crimson track In The Court Of The Crimson King. Always underrated as a guitarist except for those that know just who he is. 🎸🎶

Classic album. Got it on it'r release as Dave Stewart of Egg was on it and was blown away . Everything a Prog freak desires is on this album and Hillage's sublime solos and compositions were a taster of the great music he was to create in Gong and he's later solo career . Great stuff and one of my favourites .

Steve Hillage doesn't get the kudos he is due, magnificent guitarist and hugely underrated, even Brian May rated him as one of the great guitarists of the generation and subsequently did some work with him

So, Dave Stewart went on to form Eurythmics with Annie Lennox and Steve Hillage formed Khanate.
