Khamzat Chimaev's coach Andreas Michael details what went wrong leading up to UFC 279 weigh in

Спорт

Brett Okamoto is joined by Khamzat Chimaev's coach, Andreas Michael after Chimaev failed to make weight during UFC 279. Michael goes in-depth in his decision to call off Chimaev going any further on cutting weight in the hours leading up to the weigh-in.

@@rj021896 All he said was “he likes to eat”? He said a bit more than that. He called it Khamzat’s weakness and that he needs to be more disciplined. He compared him to Gustafsson whom he praised for being strict with his diet and never missing weight. He apologized to the UFC, Nate, and took complete responsibility and said what they need to fix so it doesn’t happen again. I guess since Khamzat wasn’t publicly flogged on the the Las Vegas Strip for missing weight there’s no accountability for some of you mma “fans”.

There are things people truly do not understand when it comes to martial arts. It's easy as a spectator to simply say that with a full camp, things would've been different. Fighters like Khamzat, Khabib etc, have been doing nothing but mastering the same thing their whole lives. Basically even if you know what khamzat is about to do, you won't be able to do anything about it. A full camp for a few months wont save you either. Same story with Khabib, everyone knew what he was going to do, but no one were able to stop him. It's a masterpiece that these fighters are able to make such a complex thing look simple and beautiful. Khamzat reminded me of clip I saw a while ago, where an anakonda that strangles and kills a crocodile.

A full camp can definitely make a difference. Khabib would’ve lost eventually if he kept fighting. Every champion does. We saw it with Leon edwards. Leon Edward beat Usman because he had a full camp. He gameplanned for that kick to land. If he didn’t have a full camp he wouldn’t have won.

Of course seeing Khamzat in that condition did not leave him any other choice than to stop the weight cut and he is not afraid to take the blame for both of them. Hate on every little thing? If the UFC wasn't able to shuffle the lineups the way they did then UFC 279 wouldn't have happened or would've been postponed. I would've gotten a refund along with countless others. The main event changing is one of the stipulations when getting a refund for a ticket. I wouldn't call that a little thing. There is a difference between a main event and a prelim fight. Who cares if a no name fighter misses weight by 8lbs. Easily replaced. We all come and pay money for the main event. That is the draw. Khamzat is a needle mover now, so his responsibility is much higher. They are called professionals for a reason and missing weight by that much wasn't professional. No matter what the excuses were. Either way, this is just a tiny bump in the road for Khamzat. As long as he learns and moves forward.

All right so I have a question we know how competitive he is we know how much drive he has we know that someday he wants to be a to division champion and defend those belts simultaneously. Wouldn’t it make more sense then to fight at weight classes a little bit closer to his natural weight? this way he doesn’t have to hurt himself to cut the weight something like light heavy weight 205 and middleweight 185 those are two weight classes closer to his natural weight so the weight cutting process would be a little bit easier and safer. Even though I understand the reasoning behind trying to go down to the lowest weight class possible especially if you can make the way because after you beat the scale you can put on as much weight as possible so I understand fighting at the lower weight classes as a bigger person because you get a slight physical and competitive advantage but it can be very dangerous and unhealthy and the toll that it takes on the body is a big one so I definitely think in my opinion he should move up some weight classes at least a middleweight I think about it he can easily get to 180 so fighting at 185 should be easy granted I’m not entirely sure what his natural walk around weight is let’s call it 224 230 so cutting down to Light heavyweight 205 should be easy. Also as someone that pride themselves on always being able to fight like he says he’ll take a fight anytime he’ll fight anybody anywhere you need to be more disciplined and stay closer to fighting weight this way when you get that call it’s less work that you have do. This is supposed to be your profession this is how you put food on the table don’t disrespect yourself by not being as ready as possible until you achieve all the goals that you want to achieve you should always be ready and that means being healthier and staying closer to fighting weight.

not during camp, full time. If he wants to commit to the lower weight class until he gets the strap he needs to control his eating habits year round, once he settles into 185 after winning the belt at 170 he can start to push is weight up so hes stronger at 185. I think hes planning to do what Connor did, win the strap at 170 and go straight for champ champ. If Izzy beats Alex its possible they give him the opportunity considering hes lapped 185 already, Izzy would probably have to fight one more fight before then for the timelines to match up.

All the people who judged khamzat so quickly and immediately pointed fingers and even booed him, you should be ashamed. I've been watching mma and kickboxing fights since 1997, I've never seen someone booed so much just because a fighter didn't make the weight. As if he was the first fighter to fail the weight in the past at every event there were always at least 2-3 fighters who missed the weight, even in this event UFC 279 there were several fighters who missed the weight ,but nobody said a single word about these fighters. Just ridiculous, people like that should be ashamed to boo such a good fighter like Khamzat who just tries everything to be the best. And the media were also not uninvolved in this matter, because they brought up this topic again and again, no matter where, that's very hypocritical when you consider that at every event there are always fighters who don't make the weight.

they should have cheered for him harder than anyone on the card. His weight miss was the reason we didnt see Tony and Nate leave the arena in a bodybags. Can you imagine what Khamzat would have done to Nate.....

Can you blame them, he was doing a mockery after missing weight. I’m a fan of his, but I believe he handled it wrong.

I think the boos were more for him flipping off the crowd and showing no humility than missing the weight.

Khamzat needs a coach like this guy around him - who can be respected! In time Khmazat will learn the media pleasing behaviour but I'd rather have him keep being the beast that everyone wants a piece of ..

Nah anyone who understand MMA and watched that fight will understand that after Khamzat grabbed him, Holland did almost every right. Khamzat was not only stronger than him, but one step ahead of him at every point as well. It wasnt domination of a weak opponent, it was a freak of nature showing what it can do.
