Kew Gardens Homes • WALKING TOUR • Queens, NY • 9/14/2023

Finally, another nice sunny day, so I jumped at the opportunity to make a walking tour video in Kew Gardens. This summer was so overloaded with rainy and cloudy weather, it was ridiculous. Maybe it will make for a more colorful autumn? Either way, it was a good time walking around this nice area. Kew Gardens is right next to Forest Hills Gardens and even though it’s not as luxurious or private, it still boasts a lot of really nice houses. Tons of Tudor’s and lots of new style mini mansions, as well as other architectural styles. All sizes too. One standout area or set of buildings, is the historic Hampton Court built in 1937. Designed by the award-winning architect Benjamin Braunstein, who was best known for his large, cost-effective garden complex apartments that still maximized light, air, and open space. It still looks beautiful and peaceful today. A neighborhood unto itself. Also nice to see, is the ever present and sprawling Forest Park, which is the third largest park in NYC. For such an outer residential area, there is easy access to Manhattan and nearby airports via the LIRR, the E and F subways or various MTA bus lines, as well as being right next to all major expressways. Originally, Kew Gardens was one of seven planned garden communities built in Queens from the late 19th century to 1950. Much of the area was acquired in 1868 by Englishman Albon P. Man, who developed the neighborhood of Hollis Hill to the south, chiefly along Jamaica Avenue, while leaving the hilly land to the north undeveloped.
Many notable people come from or have lived in Kew Gardens, such as: George Gershwin, Will Rogers, Charlie Chaplin, Burt Bacharach, Rodney Dangerfield and Jerry Springer. Look out for Dangerfields childhood home 3:19 and a memorial mural 45:54 painted in his honor, right around the corner from the Kew Gardens Cinemas. There's a great tavern called Austin Ale House, which is very popular and has a patio right next to the LIRR tracks and station. Kew Gardens is one of the safest and best places to live in NYC, The vibe around the area is great. People coming and going, homeowners doing yard work and overall a friendly atmosphere. See for yourself!

I am amazed at the huge homes built back in the day, must have been large families then, now I notice so many turned into apartments. But still the yards are kept up and the huge family homes for the most part are gorgeous. Loved the walk Paul, as usual.

Thx Lorna! I’m always amazed at the size of old houses too. I think big families were the norm back then. Your money went further as well!

Nice! I bet there were more soda shops and cool Mom & Pop businesses around then. Subways then were very different too. Thx for the comment!

A beautiful, spacious neighborhood! Could an ordinary working family still aspire to live here; the vehicles seem 'average' but the detached houses appear very upmarket, especially being so close to the City center? Many thanks for all your NYC walks.
