Keto for Brain Health - A Dramatic Personal Journey

Here's an inspiring story of one family using nutritional ketosis to treat dementia and eventually regain their lives. While everyone may not have as dramatic benefits from a keto diet, Mary and her daughter Susie demonstrate what's possible.
Born with Down's Syndrome, Susie lived with cognitive delay but was always able to enjoy her life and her family. Then, at the age of 43, dementia set in, and her family's life changed, seemingly forever. Mary started Susie on a whole-food paleo diet, and she lost weight, but her brain function continued to worsen. Then Mary found Dr. Anette Bosworth and learned about nutritional ketosis. The rest is a heartwarming and motivational story that highlights the power of this metabolic nutritional intervention.

So I used to be 264lbs I was miserable and had out on control diabetes. I made a total 180 turn in my diet and gave keto a try thinking “what do I have to lose at this point?” As of September 2023 (started September 2022) I am 166lbs off ALL diabetic meds and feeling amazing.

This video gives me motivation to get him to follow a ketogenic diet so his future will be healthy! It will be a challenge but it will be worth it. What is interesting to me is that this diet was recommended by the Mayo Clinic for my sister. We took her to Rochester Mayo in 1970. She had epilepsy and would grand mal seizure all day. On the keto diet, she hardly had any. This treatment was known back then, so what happened, I wonder.

My mother-in-law, who lived with us, had Alzheimer's and got to the point of no longer being able to speak, and instead made "whooping" noises. I read about Mary Newport's experience with coconut oil, so I thought we could try that, and see if there was a difference maybe after a week. The difference was noticeable after only a few hours so we put her on a strict keto diet, supplementing with MCT oil, as much as she could take, then added coconut oil again because it seemed to be add benefit. She gradually recovered the ability to speak, and was again able to watch TV and even read again after a while. This continued until she passed, about 2 years later. I wished we had known about this before her Alzheimer's had got so bad.

I relate to the anger. Totally different situation, but I was in pain for 6-7 years, Drs talked pain meds, surgery, etc. I didn't do any of that. Years later I had a physical that showed I was very low in Vitamin D. 3 months after I started taking it, my pain was completely gone. I was angry that no one had ever suggested blood work. The medical field as a whole is severely lacking. If there's not money to be made, they really couldn't care less. Very little money to be made in changing people's diets.

Suzy looks like she's doing amazingly well. I think we are going to see dementia onset at earlier and earlier ages as people's metabolic health worsens. I believe that certainly a ketogenic diet, or at least ketogenic additions to the diet if that is impossible for some people (mct oil, exogenous ketones, perhaps even metabolic drugs like metformin or semaglutide etc) that with these interventions we can prevent and reverse signs of brain malfunction.

This intervention is so powerful. What a great segment, as they all are! Thank you, sincerely, Metabolic Mind. Incidentally, I am trying to make an informed decision on behalf of my Mom, who was diagnosed with an occluded left, internal carotid artery. The hypoperfusion into her brain is undoubtedly causing cognitive decline, perhaps even vascular dementia. Like many with this condition, she may also be experiencing periodic TIAs. Her vascular surgeon has recommended an endarterectomy to mitigate stroke risk, but I am very concerned about potential microbleeds into her brain and, consequently, further brain damage. I'm doing my best to help Mom implement a keto diet with MCT oil supplementation. I totally understand that Metabolic Mind can not and will not suggest medical advice and/or establish a doctor-patient relationship. But I am wondering if you might comment on another procedure or treatment (besides an endarterectomy) that I could inquire to my Mom's vascular surgeon. Thanks for your life-changing insights, as always.

This is so tough! It is hard to give advice without knowing the whole story. But in general, a completely occluded carotid likely requires either no invasive treatment or an endarterectomy. Procedures like stenting aren't usually as effective for a 100% occluded carotid. Unfortunately, I'm unaware of other options to "fix" the blockage. But as you mentioned, I always recommend a focus on lifestyle and metabolic health regardless of if an invasive treatment is pursued. Sorry we can't help more!

Search GKI and keto mojo. It will tell you what the various GKI values mean. 1-3 is a high level of therapeutic ketosis.

Susie is a good ketone producer. She is usually 1.5-3.3. Always in ketosis. My understanding is that they don’t need to be super high to be used by the brain. At least that’s been our experience.

@Zawa I more or less fasted 48h for an operation after doing keto for a while and was surprised to see the GKI at 0.6 with ketones at 5.7. But I don't think this is needed all the time (or even healthy for that matter). I think highest level starts at GKI of 1.0 (and below).

Ketosis is a metabolic state where your body switches from using mostly glucose for energy and starts using fat for energy and, in the process creates ketones. Your brain can then use these ketones as a more efficient fuel source. Eating a keto diet and fasting are the most common ways to get into a state of ketosis.

How do you put a very old person on ketogenic diet? I'm struggling to find a ketogenic diet for my father. He has bad alzheimer's, coronary heart disease, he cannot get up or sit down by himself.hehasn't been able to talk for a few years now. If I feed him meat, he can't chew it. It's probable too late now?

You can try this: Beef feet, beef tendon, bone marrow, beef meat (even cheap cuts are great!) + add lots of water to cover everything... cook in Instapot (pressure cooker x 40 minutes, or slow cook until super tender). Once cooked, take the beef tendon, meat, and some of the broth, put them in a blender (just enough so your father doesn't have to work hard to chew). Scoop out the marrow and throw away the bones. Then put everything back into the pot of broth. Optional: season with salt, pepper, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, or any of your favorite herbs. You can do variations... you can add some beef liver (but be careful of hypervitaminosis, so give sparingly/infrequently), beef heart, kidneys. These are all nutrient-densed food, so even if he doesn't eat a lot, you know he's getting all the essential fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins. You can do the same with chicken. Get the thighs with skin, as you need the fat. And you can add bacon pieces and whisk some eggs into it (like an egg drop soup). You can use the pork hocks and do the same thing. This has fat and collagen. These are hearty soups. You can make a big batch and freeze them for later use. You can add butter (watch the ingredients: should contain only milk/cream +/- salt) to the soup to increase the fat content and help him maintain ketosis. You can find all these ingredients in an Asian grocery store. Just focus on feeding him meat-based diet, as it has the best bang for your buck in this scenario. Seafood is good, but is generally low in fat (so not as cost-effective). But you can get cod liver (real liver) canned in its own oil (Amazon has it). The cod liver and its oil is an excellent source of omega-3 and vitamins A,D, E, K (again, just be careful of hypervitaminosis, give sparingly). Fruits are high in carbs (avoid). While vegetables and nuts have anti-nutrients and toxins (like oxalates), are not easy to digest, and their proteins and vitamins are not as bioavailable (best avoided). If you have time, you can look up carnivore diet... so you can be reassured that eating only meat-based food is beneficial and safe long-term. For snacks, you can get a ripe avocado and mash it with some heavy cream. This has high fat content to help maintain ketosis. Once he is in ketosis, do not be surprised if his appetite is less. This is why it's important to give him nutrient-densed food. I hope your father can eat by mouth. But patients who are tube-fed can also have this (blended really fine). I hope this helps. I wish you and your father well.

I eat raw meat regularly since lots of vitamins and nutrients are heat sensitive. I don't recommend doing it unless you know it's fresh and the animal was raised on a species appropriate diet.

Is it too late to help someone in the moderate stage of Alzheimers? I'm on a keto diet for my T2, but just cannot convince my hubby (74 with Alzheimers) to do it. He loves his icecream and carbs. I feed him low carb as much as I can and am trying to find a way to replace the foods he loves with something keto, but it is so hard to get him to cooperate.

One way I help my husband reduce his highly processed carb addiction is by making a soft loaf of bread two times each month. I control what exactly is in the bread and he no longer buys any type of pastry or bread. He satisfies his ice cream craving by an occasional frozen banana. Neither solution completely ideal but better than what it had been.

2 things to help: 1 - MCT oil, he might keep some carbs, start very slowly, cause it may cause some intestinal distress, but it will give his brain fuel. 2 - there was a study that show significant improvement in Alzheimer patients just removing carbs for breakfast, but keeping the later in the day. Keep his breakfast protein based if you can, eggs or something like that, then after lunch give him carbs. And keep giving him MCT oil, that will help a lot.

With regard to keto and the brain, I hope it is a lasting effect and not something that eventually wears off like what was portrayed in the movie "Charlie" based on the book "Flowers For Algernon". kzread.info/dash/bejne/pn-XucuhlNHHY6w.html
