    What an AWESOME day this was! If you're in the Netherlands and you're interested in celebrating Keti Koti on the official day (July 1st), I highly recommend searching to see if there are any events near you. You won't regret it!

    Great video as always Sam! I'd like to say though, in defense of our school system, I think we do actually learn quite a lot about slavery (and colonialism). When I went to high school we were taught about slavery and all the horrors it brought with it, just as we were taught about our country's role in it. It has been part of the curriculum for a long time and I think it would be unfair to say we don't learn anything about these things.

    I’ve had the period we learned this a year ago, we get lessons particularly for slavery. I think we had about 2 and a half hours of PowerPoints and about six hours of working time. Only on the slavery subject

    In my time in high school 30 years ago there wasn’t much on this subject in the curriculum. The only thing mentioned was that the Dutch ships were involved with the slave trade. So I’m happy to see that has changed. It’s important we also learn about our own dark past in history, not just the achievements.

    we learn about it, but not thoroughly. So like, we learn it's bad and stuff, but the scale of human rights abuses is sooooo big and we genuinely do not learn enough about it

  • @tobihalo2

    @tobihalo2

    11 ай бұрын

    @@iemand2612 Well there can always be discussion about how much and if it's enough for sure. For example, we don't really get anything about the enslavement of Europeans by others like the Ottomans or the Barbary pirates in the Mediterranean even though millions suffered from that too. And I guess it will differ from school to schoo too, even if the curriculum is the same.

    Uit onderzoek blijkt dat inmiddels meer tijd wordt besteed aan de slavernij dan aan de holocaust. Dit is dus fijtelijk onjuist. Daarbij is de 2e wereldoorlog nogeens van recenter datum en grotere invloed op onze samenleving dan de slavernij, die sinds de middeleeuwen in west Europa met uitzondering van het Iberische schiereiland van weinig belang is geweest. Zelfs economisch niet, want geld kwam van de oostzeehandel, weinig van de VOC en de WIC is voortdurend verliesgevend gebleken.
