Kerry Wood HR in Game 7 of 2003 NLCS
It might be one of the greatest home runs in Cubs history. It's just a shame it meant nothing in the end. But at the time, Kerry Wood's game-tying, two-run homer off Mark Redman in the second inning meant everything. Wood had put the Cubs in a 3-0 hole after one inning. Then, with two outs, a run in and a man on in the second, Wood worked the count full before blasting a pitch into the left-field bleachers. Moises Alou homered in the third to give the Cubs a 5-3 lead they eventually blew. But Wood's homer was special. Thom Brennaman said it was the first homer by a pitcher in an LCS since the Cubs' Rick Sutcliffe in 1984. Plus, it woke up the crowd (listen to the reaction on multiple replays) and put the Cubs back in the game. I'll post the game in its entirety. Great job by the announcer and producer allowing over a minute of silence to let that environment reveal itself on television.
I got nothing but love for the 2016 Cubs, but this was the crew that I really hoped would have pulled it off.
Sitting here in 2021 and the Sound of an actual crowd gives me chills.
2003 Still hurts. 2016 healed alot of us, but I can still feel 2003.
I've lived by Wrigley since 1988 and have heard many game winners including the 2015 Cubs....This was by far the loudest I've ever heard the crowd cheer.
Imagine how awesome a Cubs-Red Sox World Series would've been in 2003. Came so close to getting it.
Wood always seemed to not want any of the attention for his great moments. This and the 20 strikeouts at least... Seems like a humble dude
No chest pumping, no bat flip, just a man taking care of business.
The 2003 Cubs were the best team the Cubs had in the past 20 years to not win the series. They had such a dominating lineup and rotation, far better on paper than the 2016 club. And this coming from a Cards fan.
I can't believe this was only the bottom of the second. These fans were completely off the rails. I love it
Before everyone has smart phones... fans completely engaged in every pitch
Maybe it's just me, but I really think the atmosphere around THIS Cubs team in 2003, their magical playoff run, and the general feeling around the team was bigger and better than in 2016. It sounds odd since they finally won the World Series, but the pure emotion was INSANE back then.
I know that the Cubs almost never retire a jersey that isn't a HoF'mer (they made an exception with Santo prior to being inducted into the hall) but Kerry seriously deserves it. There are very few Cubs players that gave us such great memories as Kid K. The 20 K game. The complete domination of the Braves in the NLDS to lead the Cubs to their first playoff series victory in 95 years. This home run right here. And no only that, but he was and is a true role model, a true model citizen, a man who never cheated in a game of cheaters. A man who bleeds Cubbie Blue to this today. Whenever there is a Cubs gather and Kerry is announced the crowd goes ballistic and they always shout "Kerry Kerry Kerry'. He was just.... special. A specimen that we will never see again. Retire #34 Mr. Rickets. There will never, ever, ever be another.
If you watch the stands/fans from
the crowd here really went bananas!!
The sound of that stadium after this home run was equal to the sound of 1,030,392 Male Elephant Seals bellowing after battle. Truly remarkable
“MLB and AOL” am i really that old now? 😔

I wish Wood stayed healthy. Automatic 1st ballot HOFer if he did.
I was across the street at Cubby Bear bar from Wrigley for this game and when I tell you you could FEEL the vibration coming from the park across the street. It was rumbling like an earthquake. I’ve never heard a louder crowd pop since this tbh.
