When I got to play with one in the store the other day, you could tell that the drivetrain had just been bolted on and not touched otherwise. It hadn’t been setup at all. So I did what I always did at Walmart in the bike section. I grabbed a set of tools off the bike aisle tuned the shifting, brakes, handlebar rotation, lever placement, etc. When I was done it tuned right up and shifted perfectly, brakes operated correctly, etc.

Professional Mechanic (who loves pimping Walmart bikes) opinion: When bikes come shipped like this, whether to a department store or bike shop, they are expected to be assembled and tuned before delivery to customers. One of the major selling points we told customers when they were looking at an entry level bike from our shop vs a department store was the 80 point checklist we had for each build. That said, if I took a $1200 bike out of the box and threw it together, it would shift and stop just as poorly as this one. I understand the thought behind putting the bike together as if you had no idea how to work on a bike like most buyers will. However, that is inconsistent because of how varied the setup (or lack there of) from the factory will be. And they don’t because that is the job of the store or end user to do. One of the major steps of our checklist during assembly is to check the derailleur hanger alignment. This is easily bent in shipping no matter how well the bike is packaged. The number if high quality bikes I assembled over the years with bent derailleur hangers is staggering. But again, not the job of the factory because even if they set it up perfectly and packaged it well, shippers are extremely rough. My thought is this: please assemble the bikes properly before doing initial impression because that is the only way to give these bikes a fair shake. Many people’s first impressions of a bike will be the only thing they hold onto, so proper assembly is key for the best experience. Also, after the first couple rides, the bike will need a tune-up again. Our shop offered that as a free service as housing end caps tend to compress a bit more and spoke tension from the initial truing can change so it’s important to go back over the bike again. I love the content and appreciate y’all looking for the underdog bikes to open up the entry market to more modern geometry/components.

Thanks for the well written constructive criticism. We have tried hundreds of bikes from the racks still in store. We have had several conversations with employees of several big box stores. The way we understand it, when you buy a bike from these places, the chances of it being tuned is about 10% or so at best. We currently have around 40 bikes, and we have found little difference between assembled and out of box. This is spread across several different stores and locations. From our understanding this is one of the selling points of local bike shops over big box stores. We always champion for the budget bikes, but there is just no way to please everyone with our testing style. We tune the bikes after the Realtime Review and before the Time Trials if it makes you feel any better😉😆. It is our job to show people what our experiences were like and not to sell people on bikes and stuff. Hope you understand our position. Thanks again for the comment and for watching👍.

I agree absolutely 💯.. I think this is one genre of amateurs and enthusiasts among a wide and varying range of disciplines, that don’t like touching a wrench or screwdriver. For an average bicycle consumer I get it but for people that’s into a sport that requires them fine tuning their machines, one’s that take a beating and requires an intimate appreciation for their equipment, expectations of letting Walmart or even a bike shop make it perfect right out the shop or box is an unfortunate expectation. That said, because there is a significant amount of people that do have these expectations, Wolf and Jeremiah platform fits this audience perfectly. If they were to tune up the bikes before reviewing them, then their segment of viewers, will have worst expectations and experiences with their purchases.. I too was frustrated but that’s because I’m more inclined to be hands on with just about any and everything and I’m not really their core audience. This channel bought me back up to speed on all the latest components for upgrade MTB’s and I was able to know what to search for on KZread and other places to go into detail about each component and feature.. I love this channel the most, even though I watch other related channels. I feels like hanging out with my neighbors I trust and not a stranger talking at me..

This video is fkn cool because it just goes to show how far MTB has come. Not to sound like an oldie, but I first started riding on a full rigid chromoly frame Schwinn Cimarron. I saw every piece of new tech come out from shocks, frames, cables, stems, billet cranks, helmets, gloves, and literally EVERYTHING. Back in the day, having a bike like the Kent Trouvaille would literally be a life changer. In all my years of riding, I never lost sight of the ultimate goal - to load up, go for a ride with all my buddies, and then talking about the ride longer than the actual ride itself whilst drinking beer and smoking joints🤣

Hey guys when you get a hole in the bike box in that location. It usually means that at one point someone put the box on a conveyor which is a no-no. I work at a big box store distribution center and seen bags of hardware just laying around or falling out the hole in the box. We are expressly told not to place bikes on conveyors but since they are awkward to lift and move most people just do what's easier for them because "it isn't going to their house"...

Interesting how good you feel about it considering the issues it has out the box. The crank length does make sense if they’re saying it’s for riders up to 6 foot something. For the Tick at 5’5”, you need 170mm. I’m 6’0” and I need 175mm due to my long legs, I CAN feel the difference in a set of 170’s So yes you are right in the reverse direction. 👍

Hey guys a little tip from a pro downhiller dirt jumper for over 50 years. 29-in Wheels roll faster bigger rotation going downhill. Smaller tire 27.5 less rotation slower downhill. Riding uphill 29 in rims are slower. Longer rotation uphill. 27.5 less rotation faster uphill. So I've been riding 29 in front 27.5 in the rear it helps me ride faster up and downhill I get 3/4 of the speed going down also you can throw the rear end around for switchbacks technical fast downhill sections. It also handles great for turns and Burms. You guys rock later

The xcm30 has a choice of heavy or light springs. I think you've got the light one. I have a heavy one (on my Xtrada 5) and cannot find the P/No for the light one. So I cut 20mm off my spring, heated it up and bent the spring end back to flat. It's a lot more usable now. I'd recommend trying a spacer (say 10mm thick) on top on the spring - as long as you can get the plastic spring pre-load cap threaded in without too much trouble my guess is that it would improve your spring considerably.

Great video but a lot of transmission problems. It was hard getting over the automatic transmission in the pickup opening. I get it, sometimes I have to drive my wife's car. Luckily you went straight into that Abbott & Costello routine about the gears (if you don't know, Google their "who's on first"). Nice to see you finally ride this bike because it is a nice bike for the price, if it works. You're right about 5 mm in crank length making a difference to comfort. I think it's more a personal preference and bike geometry thing, I don't think it's you're height. No brakes? Who needs them? They'll only slow you down! No wonder it felt fast;) Really nice bike in the end. With some prior adjustments it would have be rideable in stock form.

i guess its a good thing you barely need brakes there. Around here, LA, you better consider your climbs, especially on pavement. there are some wide straight streets you can bomb down without using brakes but not having them is a different story. its crazy how steep the roads get out here but out my door I can take santa monica mountain fireroads and trails all the way to the beach or west LA. its great, like having a bike highways system in the hills/mountains.

love the geometry of your outro on the tru veye--I am only keeping this bike for the frame with partial internal routing and the tapered steerer tube--I've already upgraded the for to a remote lockout 120 mm tapered air for that is 2 lbs lighter. I took videos of my headset bearings being obliterated--check your email for a link-- I replaced with proper sealed bearings--then-- Switched out to the Zoom Hydraulic calipers and frankly, I don't care if Euro/USA as I tend to feather each brake naturally. Haven't worked on my endo's so just need to know which is Rear for practicing Manual's and Wheelie's @ 62 yrs of age... lol BTW the new Deore 11sp 11-50t JGBIKE kit has no window for shifting--you save a few grams for you weight weenies out there with no window and you should be able to tell which gear you are in if it is your "Faithful Steed"!

Trouvaille - French term for, a lucky find.. Mine arrives July 15. The frame profile (head, seat post and chain stay angles) along with the 2.4’s and short stem for reach puts it in the rally category. 120\32mm forks will be perfect for this bike. It’s not a competition type bike like an x2 or enduro. It’s a get out there and do your thing what ever that is type bike. My upgrades when it arrives will be peddles, stem, and slotting some holes for internal cable routing grommets for a dropper post. A dropper post. I’m currently shopping the Shimano Deore 1x10 and 1x12 group set and hydraulic breaks (2 pots out back, 4 pots up front.) These will probably a September/October purchase.. I wouldn’t mind some Tan wall (Maxxis Rekon) but that’s more style over function and may be out of style by the time I do decided to get them and just get some affordable Continental tubeless ready tires.. The fork, well I’m not at a MTB skill level to run out of the functions this fork provides so I may never upgrade them until a year of doing trail..

Have been looking to buy one of these for several months. Walmart has been out of stock on them. Any alternative recommendations for budget beginner bike with similar abilities?

  • @andyzaluski
    @andyzaluski2 жыл бұрын

It's unfortunate that Walmart sells these because Walmart's inventory system is a joke. I actually think they list items as 'in stock' at local stores so people go to their local store and purchase a replacement when they don't find what they intended to purchase in the first place. Three days ago I tried to purchase one of these bikes(because of this video) because it's listed as being in stock at two of my local stores. I tried to call the store to make sure they were in stock but no one in the bike department would pick up the phone so I ordered it anyway. I got an email telling me to pick up the bike anytime after noon. Noon time I start driving to Walmart to get the bike and I get an email telling me my pickup is delayed. I go home and call the store. The woman at Walmart tells me she is too busy to check my order but she will substitute the bike for another one if they don't have what I ordered. I said 'What?'. I asked her to transfer my order to the other local store that supposed to have these bikes in stock. She said she couldn't. Another 'What?" comes from my mouth. I call the other store to make sure they have the bike and they don't. I contact Walmart support and they tell me no stores near me have the bike. I complained and asked them to update their inventory. I ended up ordering the bike online to be shipped 3 days ago. It was suppose to arrive the next day and now when I check the order and it is still in the 'processing' state. The order also says I should receive it in 20 days. 20 days? I can order something from China if I am going to wait 20 days. This may be a good bike but Walmart is a nightmare to deal with. I'm debating whether to cancel my order so I don't give any more of my money to these idiots.

Could you guys compare this bike with the Rockrider ST530? I don't know if this bike is available in the USA, but this is the go two budget hardtail here in Europe. (It's a 27.5-er, but it has hydraulic brakes (from Tekrto), it's made of Al, it's a 9 speed-er (with a clutch), it's under 14-15 kg and it's in the sub 500 Euros mark), but it has a 100 mm coil fork. @@WOLFTICKVIDEOS No problem man, i ended up finding one semi local to measure. I wish Walmart cared for the bikes a little better because i would've bought one, she was pretty beat up though.

Yeah, that would be a good idea to lower the bike overall. Then we could get rid if the 175mm crankarms....

Ok. Someone on reddit just flagged that some of these Kent Trouvaille bikes have the chain routed incorrectly around the derailleur. Curious if your bike have similar issue. It appears that the chain is routed below the derailment plate instead above.

I wonder if you were being forced to push the bike harder due to not having brakes? I kept hearing you yell "no brakes!" Is it actually faster than the Marlin with good brakes or were you riding an unbroken stallion that you had no choice but, to push it to it's limits? I believe better brakes, pedals and front fork replacement would be a good start for a time trial. Nice video review as always!
