You don't have to fight to be a man, but sometimes you have to fight when you're a man. It's a great message, and one that is needed these days.

This story is based on an actual event. Legend has it that the brother who said "Look, Ol' Yella's leaving" left the bar zipped into a bag.

In my head he 1 punch kills them all 😢
during the last verse when Kenny says locked the door, I always think of A bronx tale "Now you's cant leave"
I absolutely love how everyone agrees with his father and say oh its such an uplifting message... then Becky happens and they instantly all "hold up, wait a minute".
They thought of him as a coward because he was taught to not fight and just to walk away.
Kenny was a fantastic story teller.

I am 42, real men are still around.
There is movie about inspired by song staring Kenny Rogers. Same title as the song. Another great story song you need to react to is Mary Robbins "El Paso".
Lady was written by “ a young man named Lionel Richie “
This song was made into a movie and Kenny Rogers played the character of the uncle in it.... look for it if you are interested. Also several movies with Kenny playing the Gambler that was another popular song he made.
Y'all would like marty robbins hes a old country singer tells great stories!!! Checkout "mr.shorty" "el Paso" "big iron" all great stories but marty tells many.
Now Youse Can't Leave - Just like in A Bronx Tale
“Lady” is a must listen song by Kenny!!
Every man has a line .
I was raised on country music and Kenny has always been my favorite (along with Dolly). I cried when I found out he died. This song has always given me chills in the best way possible, and I always smile when he says Tommy turned and locked the door, because I know the Gatlin boys are about to get what's coming to them. Lol
Willie and Wayland have a big song with mama's don't let your babies grow up to be cowboy
My favorite of Kenny's more recent hits. My sentimental favorite is "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town".

Can't beat old kenny!
It's a great song and is a good way to live life. There is a time and place for everything. Don't go looking for trouble, but don't let others walk all over you either. Some things are worth fighting for. I think it's a good way to live a life. Evil isn't defeated by running from it, sometimes it takes violence.
There's always a part of the song that shocks reactors.......can't wait until I see that part. Kenny Rogers a legend for sure.
You really need to check out Ruben James by Kenny Rogers< another super great story
Kenney Rodgers "The Greatest" you will enjoy it.
He didn't kill the Gatling boys, he just beat the 💩 out of them. I think this is one of Kenny's songs that was turned into a movie, "The Gambler" being another.
There's a group of sisters that does the song called I fell in love again last night oh it's sweet
You should do "The Gambler" next. Great lyrics as well. Kenny Rogers mostly didn't write his own songs or lyrics but he was a great interpreter.
You have to do Ruby, don’t take your love to town, the gambler, a fine time to leave me Louise

There is an actual movie called Coward Of The County and it is exactly like the song. Kenny Rogers is in the movie as well.
The music is great because it grounds you to the story regardless of where the lyrics takes you.
One of the best in this type of song writing is Charlie Daniels...check out his song uneasy rider or still in Saigon.
He walked away from trouble his whole life, hence the coward title, until he couldn’t!
It's a true story. But Tommy was set free from jail, because he was defending his Becky after she was being R-ed. I cry every time I hear it. As a survivor of 6 yr of being SA by my brother's friend. It hits way too close to home from me.
You should react to the songs El Paso, Faleena, and El Paso City in that order by Marty Robbins
Check out "Lucille"; "Ruby. Don't take Your Love to Town" and "Reuben James".
There was a made-for-tv movie made about that song Kenny Rogers play a no-nonsense preacher in that movie that bar fight is off the hook in that movie
The County. I love this song, sometimes you have to fight for the right reason.
A big hit for Willie and Wayland Jennings would be mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys

Have you seen 'Whiplash' yet?
I liked what both of you had to say. (New subscriber 👍)
At the end, after the fight the song does say "Everyone considerd him the coward of the county but, that is something that was done a lot of times in country songs back then. Its just a restatement of the title not that, after the fight, they still thought he was a coward. Confusing I know but thats the scoop. Hope that helps
That last line was just irony about how wrong people were about him. It wasn't meant to say he was still considered a coward after the fight.
They did make a movie based on this song.
Epic song before the internet
Tommy had a 20 year history of turning away from conflict, leading to his old reputation of being a coward, but when Becky was abused by the Gatlin boys, Tommy found the Gatlin boys where they were comfortable, in a very public place to confront them, at the very least beating them down, probably to being unconscious, at least once clearly saying what the fight was about. He stood up to them all as a group as well, which would also shatter any accusation of cowardice. I'm sure that after that fight, Tommy's reputation for not being confrontational was replaced with something along the lines of "He can put up with a lot, but man, don't poke that bear, or you'll get bit HARD." Tommy demonstrated that there was distinct limits to how much provocation he'd turn the other cheek to, but when the line gets stepped over, he was willing to step up and do what he felt was necessary.
You should try his song ( We've got tonight ) with the Scottish singer Sheena Easton
Kenny didn't write this guys. It was written by a couple of Nashville songwriters.

Watch the movie. That bar room scene is awesome. He was Tommy's uncle
The singer said Tommy was his brother's son, making Tommy his nephew.
He didn't kill them, he just beat the hell out of them. You should watch the movie based on this song.
It just says "not a Gatlin boy was standing" so that didn't mean he killed them. He was considered the coward of the county because he didn't fight but he proved all of them wrong.
The lead singer is an uncle in the story..
It was a very different world in the 1950s-60s before. Justice was elusive unless society was with you.
They made a movie of this song
Old days!
hello great song and video i have another song by dolly parton which is a story its called me and little andy
🔥
You should see the movie . It gives you Insight On what Happened to Tommy's life and how he had to go through it But also at the End . I'm sure you would like the movie Version also Thank you .
❤️
not sure if it was based on a true story or not but there is a movie by the same name starring kenny rogers. pretty good movie if you want the whole story but he pretty much covered it through this song. lol. but tommy kicks ass at the end for sure.
Hey y’all!
Tommy didn't kill anybody, he went into the bar where they hung out and beat the tar out of them. The song says, "sometimes you've gotta *fight* " not *kill* .
Kenny Rodgers has a movie by the same name
Mixing up county with country is common. In high school I wrote a poem about a person being buried in a county grave because they had nothing (commonly known as Potter's Field). The HS editors changed it to country grave totally missing the point.
Look up the movie with the same title and it will explain more about it.
You have to pick your battles... Many battles are just pointless as bullies will provoke you just so they can humiliate you.... Jesus said (paraphrased) to turn the other cheek but he also said blessed are those who fight for their neighbor...
Should watch the movie with the same name starring Kenny Roger's. Becky was Tommy's fiance'
I believe this is a pretty common misconception when you listen to the final words of the song. The song is merely repeating the first line, as if saying "Everyone [had once] considered him the coward of the county." Obviously the song doesn't use those exact words, but I believe that is its intent. I'm almost positive the song writer didn't mean for it to suggest that the county once considered him a coward because he never stuck up for himself, and now they consider him a coward for beating up the guys who just raped his girlfriend.
Here's my thing... in this day and age..just messed uup
COUNTY
Man I hope you watch that video and check your wife expression during the second first she had a sad look on her face but then the last verse and a smile on her face was priceless she's right Tommy was the hero he didn't kill them but beat them so bad and then let the cops do the rest thank you guys for your reaction
If you like story telling songs, try Piano Man-Billy Joel
You guy react to both versions of Run away train and do video because it help find missing kids
no Dee was right, they called him a coward because he spent his life honoring his promise to his dad, he wouldn't fight, but after Becky was assaulted he let all that crawling he had done loose...
This song never really gave me the impression that Tommy killed the Gatlin brothers. I am from the era in which this song was released (the radio days), and a good old-fashioned ass whoopin' was more correct for the time. I think he just beat the snot out of them and left them broken and bleeding on the floor. Fun song, guys, thanks for doing it. If you really want some songs from the artist that was actually labelled "The Storyteller", check out Tom T. Hall. Look for the studio versions. "CLAYTON DELANEY", "WATERMELON WINE", "FASTER HORSES", "RAVISHING RUBY", "FOX ON THE RUN", "A WEEK IN A COUNTRY JAIL", and tons more.
When I watch reactions to this song, I wonder if the reactors really understand the line that says "They took turns at Becky". They weren't just roughing her up, they raped her. I always expect a sharper reaction.
