    You don't have to fight to be a man, but sometimes you have to fight when you're a man. It's a great message, and one that is needed these days.

This song has always given me chills in the best way possible, and I always smile when he says Tommy turned and locked the door, because I know the Gatlin boys are about to get what's coming to them. It's a great song and is a good way to live life. There is a time and place for everything. Don't go looking for trouble, but don't let others walk all over you either. Some things are worth fighting for. I think it's a good way to live a life. Evil isn't defeated by running from it, sometimes it takes violence.

    At the end, after the fight the song does say "Everyone considerd him the coward of the county but, that is something that was done a lot of times in country songs back then. Its just a restatement of the title not that, after the fight, they still thought he was a coward. Confusing I know but thats the scoop. Hope that helps

    Epic song before the internet

  • @OriginalLictre
    @OriginalLictre Жыл бұрын

    Tommy had a 20 year history of turning away from conflict, leading to his old reputation of being a coward, but when Becky was abused by the Gatlin boys, Tommy found the Gatlin boys where they were comfortable, in a very public place to confront them, at the very least beating them down, probably to being unconscious, at least once clearly saying what the fight was about. He stood up to them all as a group as well, which would also shatter any accusation of cowardice. I'm sure that after that fight, Tommy's reputation for not being confrontational was replaced with something along the lines of "He can put up with a lot, but man, don't poke that bear, or you'll get bit HARD." Tommy demonstrated that there was distinct limits to how much provocation he'd turn the other cheek to, but when the line gets stepped over, he was willing to step up and do what he felt was necessary.

    I believe this is a pretty common misconception when you listen to the final words of the song. The song is merely repeating the first line, as if saying "Everyone [had once] considered him the coward of the county." Obviously the song doesn't use those exact words, but I believe that is its intent. I'm almost positive the song writer didn't mean for it to suggest that the county once considered him a coward because he never stuck up for himself, and now they consider him a coward for beating up the guys who just raped his girlfriend.

    no Dee was right, they called him a coward because he spent his life honoring his promise to his dad, he wouldn't fight, but after Becky was assaulted he let all that crawling he had done loose...

    This song never really gave me the impression that Tommy killed the Gatlin brothers. I am from the era in which this song was released (the radio days), and a good old-fashioned ass whoopin' was more correct for the time. I think he just beat the snot out of them and left them broken and bleeding on the floor. Fun song, guys, thanks for doing it. If you really want some songs from the artist that was actually labelled "The Storyteller", check out Tom T. Hall. Look for the studio versions. "CLAYTON DELANEY", "WATERMELON WINE", "FASTER HORSES", "RAVISHING RUBY", "FOX ON THE RUN", "A WEEK IN A COUNTRY JAIL", and tons more.

    When I watch reactions to this song, I wonder if the reactors really understand the line that says "They took turns at Becky". They weren't just roughing her up, they raped her. I always expect a sharper reaction.
