Kendo Kata 4: Tsuki Makikaeshi Men

Спорт

Uchitachi: Hassō
Shitachi: (Migi) Wakigamae
Waza: Tsuki Makikaeshi Men
Hassō is the kamae of Yin and also called the kamae of wood (tree). Wakigamae is the kamae of Yan and also called the kamae of metal (mineral). The first ai-men is the big strike so make sure you execute a big cut into each other's men.
Makikaeshi is not used in the modern kendo often but this is a good technique for you to understand "kaeshi waza".

What is the target area the first men, before shinogi wo kezuru? is it a strike or is it only a movement to get into chudan together?

Thank you for your question, @ulungprabowo3382! 😄 The target area for the first men, before shinogi wo kezuru, is men. Both striking men. Hope this helps!

@@KendoGuide But why do the actual strikes end at a distance where they don't actually reach the opponent's head? And they seem like they'd miss it by even more if the opponent stayed in place. Is this just some kind of safety distance adjustment in the kata, that practitioner's would be supposed to adjust if applying the technique in combat (like for example with the tsuki in the third kata), or is there some combat reasoning for both practitioners starting their attacks from that distance?

Is this really kendo? The use of bokken makes it look like some kind of ko ryu kenjustu. Aren't we meant to only thrust at the neck in modern kendo?

This is the kata component of Kendo, which it is slightly different from the sparring part, this is more so a kenjutsu. You won't use these exact moves in keiko, but it is part of grading.
