You have to sacrifice an arm to get the swordsman. And you have to get him very well to not lose the other one.

i do not believe it is fair to say body shots didn't count as it insentivised him to just cover his head leaving his torso wide open. he realized that after the round where the sword was used to draw his attention downward.

Yeah, I'm kinda surprised he didn't realize he could just keep doing what he did at 2:49. Crossing his arms over his head is complete protection from kendo's men (head) strike. He could stay in that pose for as long as he wanted and he'd be safe. And every time, he could use that foolproof protection like he did at that time to close in to grapple range where kendoka can't effectively swing his sword, and then take him down.

If the unarmed person is in full plate knight armor you can make a case that the unarmed wrestler has a big shot at wining against a sword, armored fighting is much different, wrestling suddenly becomes one of the most important skills.

Why no? IRL many situations... No armed can block strike with table for example Yes armered man have more chance to win but not 100% And dnt forget, people can survive after stab and grab long weapon to close range If u have bag u can wripe it on arm and sometimes its enought to block and dnt lose ur arm U can see many macheto street fights from South America and people still fight after 10 strikes

Look at it this way: this kinda simulates how a match against an MMA fighter wearing full chainmail but no helmet would go. When attacking the arms, legs, and body becomes an option, of course, a sword will win. But when you can only attack the head, the fight becomes less one-sided.

Thanks for an interesting pair of videos. A few things occurred to me. First, I wonder whether a bokken strike to the leg could incapacitate an MMA fighter. Occasionally, we see MMA strikes that deaden a leg temporarily. Someone who could swing a bokken with force might be able to deliver a more powerful bokken strike to the leg. If that strike deadened the leg for a moment, the MMA fighter might not be able to push off well enough to go for a takedown. While the adrenaline of the fight can cause fighters not to notice that they have broken bones, they sometimes collapse completely from broken bones. If the outer leg bone of the lower leg were broken, many fighters would lose their balance and fall. Even if the first strike didn't break a bone, I've seen MMA fights where repeated strikes to a leg left the recipient of those strikes with a leg that barely functioned. Eventually, that fighter became less and less effective. For a fighter whose entire strategy was based around the takedown, losing that mobility would make the takedown less likely. As the fight continued, the fighter using a bokken would continue to place strikes on the leg and arms until the MMA fighter could not continue. Secondly, I'm not sure that a broken wrist wouldn't stop an MMA fighter from being able to continue a takedown. In this example, the kendo fighter was able to escape one takedown even though the MMA fighter wasn't injured at all. The takedown seems to require some ability of at least one hand to grasp the back of a leg and pull the opponent off balance. A bokken strike that broke an arm might make the hand impossible to control effectively. Even if the MMA fighter didn't feel the break, the lack of structural integrity of the arm might keep him from completing a takedown. If the kendo fighter escaped that takedown, then the pain of the broken arm might start to assert itself. If the next bokken strike broke the other arm, the MMA fighter would become even less effective. I'm not sure that disregarding arm strikes is completely realistic. Thirdly, I accept that maybe Francis Ngannou couldn't be taken down by a liver strike, but MMA fighters have been knocked down or knocked out by a hard strike to the liver. If the kendo fighter landed a hard enough liver strike, I think there would be a chance that the MMA fighter would be knocked out. In any MMA fight, strikes to the body are considered a way to reduce the opponent's endurance. I would think that a hard bokken strike would have the same effect. If the kendo fighter could avoid the MMA fighter's charges and deliver hard strikes to the body, the MMA fighter might tire more quickly and be less effective. What I don't know in all of this is whether kendo fighters train to deliver extremely forceful blows with their bokken. To the extent that kendo is supposed to simulate fighting with a katana, maybe all of the strikes are designed to simulate the cutting action of a sharp sword instead of the maximum impact that a blunt force weapon could deliver.

As a practitioner: for most kendo strikes the ideal is that the blade should have maximum possible speed at the moment of impact, and not that much force. Force shouldn't really be channeled into the strike, instead allowing the blade to bounce off the target. This achieves a very specific sound on impact that tells the referees the strike was good. And it's not painful for your sparring partner. With a sharp blade, such strikes would deal enough damage to incapacitate, with a bokken probably not (wouldn't bet on it tho, bokken is still a heafty stick so I wouldn't be too surprise if even that was enough to somewhat crack a bone). But that said, those snappy strikes are hard to do, and take years of regular practice to achieve somewhat consistently. If I wanted to hit hard instead, I think I could just drop all that effort for achieving "the perfect tenouchi" and go back to whacking like beginner.

Against a real sword you really have one chance before getting killed. It's even more dangerous as to fight a knife, because of the wide range of the blade. It's a bit slower as a knife, but you have to sacrifice something if you want to disarm a swordsman with knowledge of fighting with a sword.

Not under the rules of this fight tho, only strikes to the head count. If he hit the legs, he'd be leaving himself totally open as he did that. And if it was an actual bokken vs. unarmed fight, then there's not much the unarmed guy could do at all. A strike to the head would be lethal, and to stop it he'd have to try blocking it with his hands, which would just get his hands broken instead. Or kendoka could instead break some ribs or a leg, he's got a really fast attack way more range than the MMA guy, so hitting anything and stepping back would be relatively safe for him.

This its a continuation of another video, they were thinking of a fight with Ngannu. The thought was that if someone like Ngannu prepares himself he can endure 1 hit to whatever part of the body you are targeting, even if you break bone he its gonna catch you if you don't hit their hear. Also I think you can endure 1 hit to the leg with a bokken, like not if you get hit by a full swing but charging forwards you arent gonna have time to get a full swing it would have to be a downward swing with less power. Top tier strikers have enough power to break baseball bats I think Ngannu can endure 1 hit.

@@Motorata661 One hit would stop his momentum enough for another. I know it's a continuation from another video but normal leg kicks destroy legs so a bokken could do the same but even more so. You can use it to hook the leg and sweep or just hit him with the heavier handle.

@@stevenoconnor3256 Normal leg kicks hurt a leg after several hits, thats why i am sure he could endure one hit. Also Ngannu is 260+ pounds, his momentum isnt gonna be disturbed by a bokken, you would need to his something that would make him stop and thats hard. Hit him in the side? You break his ribs but hs is still charging you and will catch you and kill you. Hit him in the leg? He can endure It and still catch you. Hit him in the arms? You may break It , maybe Ngannu could endure if he managed to distribute the force beteween the shoulder and the arm like they train to do in Muay Thai to stop kicks but even if they break his arm he is still charging and Will kill you. You can still fight even after a broken bone, boxers regularly still fight after breaking their hands. Hell i have seen It in person, a Guy fucked Up blocking a kick and the Kick hit his hand, he broke a few fingers but he kept going until the trainer stopped him, put them back in place and continued sparring. This was a random 40+ years old in a sparring match whitouth any stakes. I am sure Ngannu can continúe after you break a bone

There's no way someone with bare hands fights with someone with a katana. A katana cuts a lot, it makes serious damages, with one move it can cuts an arm or a leg away or even the head.

i understood i.e. is not supposed to be real sword but a stick but rule was too much leaning towards MMA guy. It should have been 3 hit to any part of body/legs equal to KO just like headshot KO. We have already seen body shot n calf kick KO in MMA fights, so stick hit to calf, knee, body 3 times in raw. ouch!

After looking at some comments I feel a need to play captain obvious. Like in sports, these rules weren't to simulate a real life scenario. They were to make even out the chances in such a way so the fight will be entertaining to do and watch. But it's not like there's nothing to learn from such play-practice! Dunno what exactly would be in this case. Still, real life situations are messy and you never know when a hilarious opportunity opens!
