As a 10 year old boy in St. Louis this was devastating. Nearly every Cardinal fan hated the trade. Keith was very popular, maybe especially with all of our moms. Still, you could say it all worked out okay for both teams over the next several years. But, we sure did miss Keith.

Same situation here. Was a 10 year old Cardinal fan. The trade made zero sense. The big rumor was cocaine. Only thing that made sense. How do you trade one of the best players on the planet for nothing? Not sure how that trade worked for the Cardinals. Obviously we eventually got Jack Clark who hit tape measure home runs, but don’t see that trade was good for anyone but the Mets.

I remember when this trade happened; any baseball fan with even a minimal amount of knowledge of the game could immediately see the professionalism Keith brought with him, both with his fielding and his hitting. To this day, I feel that he's the best fielding first baseman Ive ever seen, the only first baseman who ran the infield defense. I remember having the sense that things were finally starting to look up, especially that the young talent was almost ready for the major leagues, headlined by Darryl Strawberry.

@@patrickwall8517 no, it was far more than that. Whitey once said about Keith, “he was more interested in doing The NY Times crossword puzzle than the game,”. Whitey thought he wasn’t intense enough, or perhaps too intellectual. This was cultural, personal. I’m not saying coke had nothing to do with it, but it was far, far more than that.

@@dzaniersome places are not great fits and he had a ring with St. Louis and Frank Cashen clearly saw his opportunity. It sounds like he and Herzig didn't see eye to eye. Keith is a California guy, Herzog was a rust belt Kraut. They probably came from different worlds.

@@thephotoandthestory Yet George Brett was also a California guy and Whitey loved his outward intensity. He probably perceived Keith as laid back and even a bit cerebral. George wasn’t like that. Brett almost was like a football player out there. It was personal between Keith and Whitey. You’re right.

For a then young teenage Cardinal fan. This day shocked me. I was watching a minor league team call then. "The Quincy Rivermen" small town north of St. Louis about 90 miles on the Illinois side of the Mississippi river. The P. A. announcer comes over the airwaves. "Keith Hernandez has been traded to the New York Mets for Rick Ownby." All the Cub fans thought that was just beyond funny. While all of us Cardinals said the same thing. "Who the hell is Rick Ownby???" Well, I'm glad he's in the Cardinals hall of fame. Good for you and your great career with the Cardinals and the Mets. Peace Keith!

Bing Devine was the GM who traded Carlton. It was a directive straight from Gussie Busch. Carlton wanted a $5k raise after going 20-9 in 1971 and Busch refused. The negotiations got heated and words were exchanged and one thing led to another. Trading Carlton probably cost the Cardinals many division titles and possibly a championship or 2. Carlton went 27-10 in ‘72. The Cardinals lost the division by 1 game that year. Joe McDonald was the GM when Hernandez was traded.

Whitey Herzog probably saw Keith as competition. Maybe Whitey thought that someday Keith would be a manager and take his job because he was personable and good looking. People in charge are always threatened by that. Keith would have made a great manager too. If Buck Showalter could manage why not Keith. But, Keith was offered the announcing job right after retiring. So, he took that nice paying easy job. Don't blame him. But, him managing would have been GREAT.
