Keg Fermentation : Transfer vs No Transfer

In this video I brew up a double batch of a Dark Mild to experiment after having a question that was posed to me. Once fermentation is complete do you have to transfer to a serving vessel or can you just leave it in the fermentation keg and serve from that? Lets put it to the test and find out!!

This is a really interesting video. I'm currently weighing up whether or not I go the closed transfer route, or brew and serve in a single keg route. This was really helpful 👍 Cheers!

So far I’ve been really happy with the results. Don’t think I’d leave the beer in there for a super long time on the east but if you’re gonna drink it in a reasonable amount of time I think it’s a great method to try for yourself. Appreciate you watching. Sláinte

Great video! After two years, do you have an update? I just started fermenting in a keg so I'm split on this! Thanks!

Ya, I’ve started fermenting in a keg and then I thought why not try leaving it in there instead of transferring to secondary. It was an IPA and it only developed in flavour over the few weeks it took for me to drink the beer. No bad flavours or off flavours. It even cleared up the more it sat. Nice video.

Thanks Nick!! My wife isn’t a huge fan of the beard but as a bald guy is the only thing I can do lol. Interested to see if the beers change with more time in the keg. Sláinte my friend

Great review and brew day. Never tried a mild I'll have to brew 1 one day. I'm behind on brewing holiday beers. Fedex lost a package and I had to call the home brew supply to ship me another order. I joined the brewtubers club 4 months ago. Learning a bunch from the members. Cheers!

I have done a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale clone as well as a couple pilsner's and I've keg ferment with a spunding valve and a floating dip tube And my beers have come out great. I haven't taken them off the east cake and they have been sitting on them for 6 to 7 weeks now after cold crashing with issues.

Excellent video and Great Experiment! - I did get entertained by the telling them apart via Ball Lock vs Pin Lock as I was looking at the two kegs and seeing the big black rubber ring vs none was more than obvious to me. Maybe I missed it, but I'm assuming you used a floating dip tube, especially for the one on trub? I would also say that the one that never got transferred also looked like it had a lot tighter bubbles giving it a frothy look which is always nice in darker beer.

Thanks Mike. Yea during editing of the video it occurred to me the pin lock had the rubber top to it. Oh well lol. I’m an idiot some time. Appreciate the feedback. Hope you and your family had a great thanksgiving!! Sláinte my friend

Thanks for the video. My thought would be how much time will it take for any negative results to appear? I would guess it would take at least 2-3 months for the yeast to die and decay enough to have a flavor impact. It is a race against time but the yeast is being stored cold under beer, so not a bad environment. Eventually there will be brown/black color in the yeast and they will get nasty but probably well past when you would drink the beer. So your experiment shows this is probably a viable approach for beers sensitive to oxygen. A floating dip tube would go along well with this approach. Dry hopping is tough due to the closed nature but magnets are your friend! Best of luck!

Appreciate the feedback. Agree. Typically beers don’t hang around much past the 3 month around here. I guess I should so more experiments with a longer age and see the impacts. Sláinte

Luv the idea of doing this with a NEIPA!!! Your thoughts on doing a no transfer and using the entire yeast cake for a 2nd identical batch ??

That’s a cool idea. I’ve done that with a scotch ale before and it blew up. Couldn’t believe how fast the yeast took off. It ripped through it
