Condition - 95% (not counted in the score)
Quality - 9.0
This set of speakers oozes quality, as you would expect from KEF. The aluminum cabinets remind me of the Definitive Technology Mythos line, which is a very good thing in my book.
The stands, binding posts, grills and wall mounts are all very high quality feeling.
My main complaints are that the binding posts don’t accept my banana plugs and the limited controls on the subwoofer.
Other than those two items, I was very impressed with the quality of this set.
Sound - 8.0
This set did a very good job filling my small room with sound. The Uni-Q drivers did a good job blending into the room and the highs were detailed and crisp.
However, set would get lost in larger rooms, especially the subwoofer. Overall, this set was just lacking some of the impact and dynamics I’ve become accustomed to.
Still a very good sounding system, in small to medium sized rooms.
MSRP Rating - 8.5
I couldn’t find the exact MSRP for the 5.1 package but it was very close to $1,700.
For that price, this is a very good sounding system and it was built to high standards. Definitely worth the MSRP, considering the name brand.
Aesthetics - 8.5
I really like the looks of this set. I’m assuming most people shopping for speakers like this, are probably mounting them on the wall but they are equally attractive sitting on the stands.
They are large enough to look substantial but also small enough to not visually dominate the room.
Nice and modern looking system!
Price Paid Value - 8.0
Not my best deal ever but easily worth more than the $400 I have tied up, into this set.
The next owner will be getting another good deal on a great set of speakers:)

    I made that post and the KEF sale hit the next day. I had no chance. Haha I think I’m going to grab the 3 JBL HDI 1600 also but I’ll likely hold off, and let my bank account heal a little first:) I’m going to do an unboxing video of the R3’s, listen to them for a week or two and then I’ll review them. I’m excited to open them up!

    Hey Dustin! I have had that sub since 2006 that I bought as part of a KEF 5.1 system of egg shaped, aluminum speakers. The sub is good and fast, but limited in output. Definitely need at least 2 of those subs to get decent output for even small size rooms. I have tried to sell my sub but no one would even pay $100. I sold the 4 egg shaped speakers for $500 though! The center speaker tweeter blew out one time when I was playing Dark Side of the Moon really loud, and I could not source a new old stock replacement. The KEF UNI-Q design is awesome for home theater as the co-encentric design responds extremely well to room correction. Very holographic sound stage where sounds seem to float in the room.

    This sub is definitely worth more than $100. I’m surprised that it didn’t sell, at that low of a price. It’s a great little performer, wrapped in a beautiful cabinet. With that said, this set still hasn’t sold for the $400 I have invested in it, so I’ll likely take a loss:/

    Speakers and Amp that sell worldwide. They put a plug in the binding post that you can pry out with a small screwdriver. Because it matches the wall outlet in Europe.

    Yeah, I’ve always wanted to try the KEF “egg” style speakers. They pop up on the 2nd hand market quite frequently, in these parts, so it’s only a matter of time. Thanks for the suggestion, Luke!

    Very awesome to see a review of my own system after so many years. I bought this system new in January 2007, for $1,299. Still my primary system today, using in my relatively small living room (19x13). Interested in your comments about powering them. I am using a Sony STR-DN1080 receiver, and am wondering if you think this is underpowered? Sony claims 100 watts RMS into channels at 6 ohms, not 8. I do not feel the soundstage is particularly immersive, though volume levels tend to be modest. I am ok with the HTB2 performance (crossover set at 120), though sometimes a bit boomy.

    Don’t know about this HT set, but I do have a pair of Kef bookshelves. Q-100, previous gen of the current Q-150. Quality is felt as you unbox them. They sound great in my stereo rig w/two small 8” subwoofers. They sounded good w/o subs. Buy from Kef w/confidence in build & design quality. Thanks for the glimpse of Dune. I read that book in junior high after my Dad recommended it. Great novel. I want to see movie. 👍🏼☕️😎

    KEF has always oozed quality to me. Everything from the packaging, grills, cabinets etc. are all well thought out and higher quality. The Q-150’s are great sounding speakers, excellent choice. And yes, definitely check out Dune. Probably one of my favorite movies now. Thanks for stopping by, my friend!

    Dustin, Good review. Thanks. 👍🏼 If you could please, I’d love if you would describe that European sound signature in a little detail. I’ve heard ppl talk about the British sounding speakers, and I have never been clear on what that means. I’d like to understand it better for a speaker buying decision. I heard a big pair of Wharfedale speakers that stopped me in my tracks when I was a teen years ago. I was awestruck actually. I have always wanted a pair of Wharfedale since. Considering a pair of their bookshelves and interested in learning more about their overall sound. As best I can recall, they weren’t bright at all. They didn’t sound veiled either. Sort of a slightly bass-influenced sound. I’m not doing them justice. Any help appreciated. Do you like Wharfedale speakers? Btw, just found you last week and enjoying your channel.

    Question! If i wanna connect a KEF HTB2 to a sonos system, do i need the sonos connect or the sonos connect amp? Connect doesn't have an amp and connect amp does have an amp.

    Hi Dustin, I'm enjoying your content and have been subscribed for a while now. The reason I'm commenting is that reviewers hardly ever talk about house sound. Each speaker manufacture "voice" their speaker to a certain sound. But you never hear reviewers talk about that. It's always bass is good, mids are good, and treble sucks. Or something to that effect. And I believe that the dumbing down of certain aspects is a total disservice to the audio community. Would that be something you could incorporate into your reviews? Thanks

  • @blazermdx

    @blazermdx

    Bass is definitely the easiest aspect of sound to articulate, which is why I think so many reviewers spend so much time discussing it. I’m always looking for ways to improve my videos and this channel so I’ll definitely take this request to heart. I will see if I can discuss the “voice” of brands and speakers more. Thank you very much for the suggestion!

I am interested in the Facebook group but couldn't find it. Can you send me a link or post it in the details? I have two subs with passive radiators and it seems like the perfect design because it offers the deeper bass of a ported sub without the chuffing but I remember you saying that some people don't like passive radiators, do you know why?

  • @blazermdx

    @blazermdx

    2 жыл бұрын

    I’ve owned about 20 passive radiator subs over the years, I’ve always loved them due to their deeper response, in smaller packages. The feedback that I’ve read from people that don’t like passive radiators are that they are a band-aid fix and you should go ported right away. Ported will have quite a bit more output but with that comes a larger box. I like the size/performance ratio of passive subs, and nobody can tell me differently. Haha

  • @blazermdx

    Yeah, definitely figured that out. The problem is that the opening wouldn’t accommodate my fairly wide banana plugs. Actually broke a piece of the banana plug off, trying to shove them in. Pretty strange, actually, as I’ve used these speaker wires with hundreds of different speakers. Thanks for stopping by and for taking the time to comment!

    What do you mean about assemble? The cabinet is one piece with a removable “foot” where you can change the orientation either vertical or horizontal. If you are trying to integrate the sub into your system, you will need a receiver or processor with built-in bass management, since this sub doesn’t have a gain/volume knob. I hope that helps a little!

    That sucks your videos are getting copyright strikes. Are they being removed or just demonetized? if they are just being demonetized you could separate sound demos out into another video that way your reviews would at least be monetized.

  • @blazermdx

    @blazermdx

    2 жыл бұрын

    I haven’t monetized the channel but I was planning on doing so, if I hit 10,000 subscribers. Right now, this channel is just costing me money but luckily I’m having fun so that doesn’t matter all that much. Good idea about editing out the audio sections of the videos. Hopefully people would understand and stick around, if I end up going that route. Thanks again my friend, I hope you are doing good out there!
