Listed Price - $540

Condition - 90% (not counted in the score)
Quality - 8.0
I have always loved Definitive Technology and their quality. The Mythos lineup feels especially high quality, mostly because of the metal cabinets.
The reason I’m only giving an 8, which is still a good score, for quality is because of internal amplifier failures which seems to be more prevalent, the older the powered speakers get.
Still very sturdy cabinet, nice speaker components and high quality finishes.
Sound - 8.5
Definitive Technology has always made, what I consider, dynamic sounding speakers. I have had some DT speakers where the 1” aluminum tweeter seemed a bit harsh or bright.
The center channel was the weak link, in this 5 speaker pack. The towers were made and designed to sound large but they are large. The Mythos 3 was designed to sound larger than it’s size but I still consider it to be a minor compromise.
The set would have scored better if it came with the matching CLR-2000 or 2002.
Excellent sounding set of speakers for the price. The bass from the towers and the bi-polar design, are the highlights.
MSRP Rating - 7.5
At a MSRP of $2,749, this set when new offered a pretty good value. The fact that the towers come with built in subs, that would satisfy the vast majority of novice home theater fans, can really save money.
The reviews of Definitive Technology speakers are usually very good and value is one of the main reasons. For what I consider to be mid-level speakers, DT is a great overall option.
Aesthetics - 8.0
I know this style is a big love it or hate it thing but I happen to like the looks of the towers. They are kind of understated, with the “sock” covering up the vast majority of the cabinets but that’s the point.
With that all said, the towers are pretty large so make sure you have the height and the depth available to you.
Price Paid Value - 8.0
$540 for this set is a very good deal as I have seen the towers alone, sell for more. This would be an excellent set for beginners to take a nice step up, from more entry 5 speaker packages.
Again, the fact that the towers each have a respectable sub, will help folks out there save floor space and money.

I have a pair of BP 2004s that I bought feom a stereo shop back in 2005 I think, I have the center channel speaker and two rear surround speakers. I have them hooked up to a Yamaha DSP A1 amplifier. The sound is absolutely amazing. I never get tired of listening to them with movies.

Here you go again, taking me down memory lane! I had a full Def Tech setup a few years ago, before I moved to Martin Logan Motions (BP8s, CLR 2002, SR9080s, PM 800s). I really enjoyed the full, wide soundstage of the bipolar towers. But the Pro Monitor 800 &1000s failed me as atmos height channels. They distorted during scenes in Godzilla: KOTM. I knew I had to upgrade after that, lol. I ended up selling my full set for about $700 to a buddy of mine. He's enjoying them now with a set of RSL Speedwoofers. I might have missed this, but I recall Def Tech customer service being quite stellar. Even though they have amp failures (what company doesn't, I'm looking at you, SVS!), as long as they can make up for it with spare parts and great customer service, then you really have to add extra points for that, imo. Keep up the great work, sir.

Hey my man! BP8 are awesome speakers. When I worked retail many moons ago, my boss tasked me with buying a pair of tower speakers for the showroom. This was a dream job for me as I got paid to audition speakers at Magnolia, that I could never afforded. After milking my audition time, I ended up bringing back a pair of BP8’s:) The CLR2002 was my favorite definitive center as I preferred unpowered centers. Thank you again for all the support here, I truly appreciate it!

Definitive Technology makes about the best bang for buck speakers out there, especially if you don’t have room for subs. I actually connected with a guy that preferred the BP7001 SC towers over some VERY high end B&W towers. Needless to say, he was a very happy camper when he grabbed my 7001’s, and sold off his B&W for a pretty hefty profit. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, I really appreciate it!

Great channel! I brought a pair BP30’s in 1999 for $1300 new during a audio store closing sale. Also got a pair of BP20’s ten years ago off Craigslist for $200 and a CLR2000 for $150 on eBay in 9.5 condition. I’m 50/50 music& movies and IMO they sound as good or better than systems I’ve heard at five times the price. The bi-polar sound isn’t for everyone, but with this system it’s like being at a live concert. They really shine when powered with the Emotiva XPA-5 gen1 that I scored at an estate sale five years ago for $200!

I have the original BP20 and BP10 towers. The 20s can dip low af, to where I thought my subs (svs nsd-12) was being utilized; they also love plenty of current (500 watts). Anyhow, I enjoyed the subs when I owned one and it was functioning (plaqued with issues) , but not within the speaker cabinet, because the amps are questionable at best, and there's only a 1 year warranty...so, I guess they know their amps have sub-par reliability.

Unfortunately, this set of speakers requires a receiver/amplifier, to use them. The subs in the towers are powered but you will need a receiver to power the mids/highs and the rest of the speakers. If you are looking for good sound and you don’t want to use a receiver, look at the JBL and AudioEngine powered speakers. Both brands, among others, are fully powered so you won’t need a receiver.
