Where I Purchased - Pawn Shop
Listed Price - $200
Average Guy Hi-Fi Price Paid - $180
Condition - 90% (not counted in the Average Guy Hi-Fi score)
This set is in very good condition with some slight scratches on the gloss black finish. All grills are in great shape and all tweeters and woofers are pristine.
Quality - 7.5
These “little” speakers might look like they aren’t higher quality upon first glance but you will change your mind the first time you hold them.
The cabinets are heavy and feel very stout. The grills are nice and so are the binding posts.
Sound - 7.0
This is a tricky category as these sound absolutely amazing for their size but leave a lot to be desired, if you have owned larger speakers.
It’s hard to imagine a better sounding system for the size and the cost of these awesome speakers but I will keep looking.
MSRP Rating - 7.0
At $1,000 this is undoubtedly a fantastic 5.1 option but knowing that a set of the Polk Series II’s, that I just reviewed, Is only ~ $275 more, I marked these a little lower.
With that said, this DT set comes with a subwoofer and the much larger Polks didn’t.
Aesthetics - 7.0
I am super picky about how speakers look in my small room but these didn’t score all that well.
You’d think that I would love them because of their diminutive size but I honestly prefer a little larger speakers than these. Just didn’t fill my visual requirements the way I thought they would have.
I normally love the looks of all the Definitive Technology lineup, especially the Mythos series so I felt a little bad about ranking them this low.
Price Paid Value - 7.5
On the second hand market, $180 is a very good deal but I have just had amazing deals over the years so the score is influenced here.
Average Guy Hi-Fi Rating - 36/50 = 72%
This is a great little system for those that want a great sound and have a small room. These speakers can be had on the 2nd hand market for great deals so be sure to keep an eye out!

Great video! You deserve wayyyyyyyyy more subscribers! Would you say these would be a good set for critically listening to music for say a beginner audiophile or even mid level audiophile if you can get them at a good price? How is the sound accuracy? How clean is the bass? Also, I watch steve guttenberg too and like his content.

Hey, thank you for the kind words! I am about 7 weeks in, of taking this seriously so I am pretty happy with the subscriber count. This set really impressed me with how large they sounded, in such small packages. They have a detailed sound to them and the bass response was quite good, given the size of the subwoofer, This is a great, small system for those who have a small room or have a tight budget to start. If you have a larger room, these might a larger center and mains and a bigger subwoofer added down the road but this set will definitely get you started out on the right path. Thank you for stopping by and thank you Goldie the advice! I’m a big Steve Guttenberg fan, he’s an asset to this community.

I have had this set for a decade for my theatre setup in my room. If anyone got these for $200, that's a steal! They sound great for their size. My only issue was the sub. Either I got a trash one or it's just trash itself. Or maybe I like boomier bass. Either way, I bought a new Klipsch subwoofer and kept the satellites and my world's been amazing ever since.

  • @blazermdx

I would tend to agree with you, the sub was probably the weak link, if there was one. Considering these speakers are only a little larger than the double Bose cubes, and produce much larger and clearer sound, this setup is great for those with smaller to mid sized rooms or for those that cannot get away with larger speakers. If you spend some time on the crossover points and sub positioning, this little set of speakers will surprise you. Now I’m curious, which Klipsch sub did you get? Thank you for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it!

@@blazermdx It was the Klipsch 12HG Synergy. This was almost a decade ago and it has far exceeded my expectations. It hits like it's supposed to without being too boomy. I was so disappointed with the Pro Sub 600 that I thought maybe it was me being too picky. It sounded hollow and got worse the more you raised the bass level. To this day, the Klipsch 12HG is still going strong and I see no reason to ever replace it.

That sounds like a perfectly sound path! I think the mainstream picks up the more mass produced brands to start and then venture into the home audio wormhole where many of us journey. I am pretty size and aesthetically restricted at the moment, like many out there, so some compromises need to made. With that said, the top-shelf, mainstream brands will get most of us 92% there. It’s the people chasing that 8% are the that keep the rest of us drooling over the various forums. Cheers, my friend!

Hey, sorry for the late reply! That’s an awesome receiver! You just need to run one subwoofer/RCA cable from one of the sub outs on the Yamaha to the LFE/RCA connection on the sub. You will also have to go into the Yamaha menu and make sure that the sub is turned on. That should be all you need. Look up “subwoofer crawl”, to make sure you aren’t placing the sub in a null. Let me know how it goes, my friend!

I don’t have any experience with the PSW108 but I’ve read/seen some positive feedback. With that said, I would expect the PSW108 to outperform this little sub. If I’m totally honest, I felt the Pioneer Subwoofer was the weak link in the chain. It’s totally fine for a smaller room, if you don’t need to hit reference levels. I would be scouring the used sites to find a used, quality, subwoofer. Brands like SVS, HSU, PSA, Rythmik, Martin Logan, B&W et. There are usually a couple really good deals in my area at any given time.

My biggest problem with the PC 600 series is the subwoofer. I really dislike that it doesn't have an always on switch/position. It falls asleep very easily during long quiet periods of movies and games, and doesn't wake up when the receiver is turned on. I sold the subwoofer and bought an SVS SB-1000 subwoofer. It has an always on switch position, and sounds a lot better than the Def Tech subwoofer!

I just picked up the sub from this system at a thrift store for $17.50! I haven't decided if I like it yet or not. It's definitely louder and punchier, but doesn't sound as smooth or deep...but I'm also still trying to get everything dialed in. I'd be going from a 12" sub, but only 150w (Infinity HTS-20SUB). It seems like it should be an upgrade, but replacing a 12 with an 8 just doesn't seem like it, lol.

Hi Average Guy Hi-Fi. I am on the market for a budget 2.1 setup for my PC and would appreciate your opinion. The options are: 1) Klipsch Promedia 2.1 2) Edifier S350DB 3) LG CM4590. All 3 are in the $100-$150 range when on sale. What are your thoughts?

  • @blazermdx

    @blazermdx

    4 жыл бұрын

Hello! I will be totally honest, I only have experience with the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 and it was a couple generations older than the current version, if you are buying new. That Edifer looks to be pretty interesting, especially at that price. The LG looks like it would look be loud but I have never owned any LG speakers. That set has potential but you won’t find much talk about LG on the audio forums. Again, they might be good and I have no experience. With all that said, what are you looking for? Loud, quality, heavy bass or all of the above? I might check my local market, if I was you, to see what’s available before I pulled the trigger. Here’s a set of AudioEngine A5+ (look them up) for $100. seattle.craigslist.org/see/ele/d/seattle-audioengine-5-amplified/7081927130.html Just a thought:) Oh, now to your question. If I had to choose between those I would probably lean towards the Edifier, going off the reviews and the reviewed build quality. Here’s a great review from one of my favorite speaker reviewers: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nXyTj6yqkaTZf6Q.html

@@blazermdx Hi! Much of what I listen to are vocals and acoustics. Nothing bass heavy. However, I do play PC games and watch movies from time to time so that's when the subwoofer comes in. I am looking for full sound, accurate reproduction, on the warm side, wide soundstage, very detailed but somewhat forgiving and not overly bright. Does not need to be loud. It should be clear enough for the faintest instruments/details to come through without increasing the volume. I don't have any experience with receivers/amps which is why I'm looking at powered bookshelf monitors with subwoofer out. Then again, I don't have any experience with bookshelf speakers either. There are so many! I wish there was a place I can go to listen to them all. I didn't know the AudioEngine A5+ amplified can be had for $100! Would that be your ultimate pick? Background: My car had Mark Levinson so that's what I became accustomed to. My new car has Bose Centerpoint, 5.1 surround sound decoding, active noise cancelling but I find it to be noticeably inferior to the Mark Levinson. I've used the same set of Logitech 5.1 PC speakers for 17 years but now that I've moved on to laptops instead of desktop computers, I no longer have a dedicated sound card to output proper 5.1 audio. That's one reason why I'm moving on to a new 2.1 setup. The other reason is I figure 2 good/large speakers will sound better than 5 mediocre/small ones. For headphones, I have a large collection of multi driver balanced armature IEMs. But due to earwax buildup, my doctor suggested that I stop using IEMs. Now I use AKG K701 open back. As for home theater, I don't have a proper setup yet. That's why I subscribed to your channel ;-) Thinking about Klipsch 2.1 or 5.1 or the new Klipsch wireless home theater with individual amps built into each wireless unit. That new Dolby Atmos stuff are pretty intriguing as well but $$$$. Much thanks for your reply and advice. I wish your KZread channel all the best!
