Keeping Fiddler Crabs Alive (Yearly Crabitat Cleaning)

In this video I perform my yearly cleaning of the habitat that I have built for keeping the fiddler crabs that I catch for bait alive. This habitat works beautifully and will keep them healthy indefinitely. I did make a few changes to the setup from last years experience.

    Hey Jessie I'm gonna be coming down to VA beach in a week or so and want to do some fishing. I'd like to find some flounder or sheep head. Can you suggest a spot to start looking? Also where do you catch your fiddler crabs?

  • @SouthernReelsFishing

    @SouthernReelsFishing

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's a lot to answer honestly. The where to go totally depends on weather and winds mostly. As far as the fiddlers you would be better just buying them. I can't give up the spots we use to catch them, or else I might end up missing lol

    Went out to the Elizabeth river like you mentioned in another video and found some, although almost sank in the mud. How much sunlight and food do you give them to stay alive?

  • @SouthernReelsFishing

    Sunlight not really needed, but plenty of fresh air, no closed containers... Feed them some fish flakes every other day

    @@SouthernReelsFishing Thank you, man. We went to a mud flat on Mobjack Bay on a sunny evening to catch them. The ONLY crabs out were males. We literally had zero females. Using a gallon of sand from their spot, I had 75 to 80 in the large tote initially. I used the instant ocean, solo cups and crab food like you suggested. Mortality at first was a little high, but we ended up with 60 or so after two weeks. There were just too many males in one place (just like anywhere else - not good haha). Had it not been for the solo cups, it would have been carnage. Bad thing was (good actually), we only ended up using 10 or so (plus the dead salted ones) due to a smoking trout bite, and I mean SMOKING. Thank you for the great tips and taking the time to research and experiment. I really appreciate the facts, details and refining of the methods.

    Yes. There is a kayak launch on the right thats before you get to the main ramp area. If you go there at low tide they will be out.

    Not trying to steal anyone's spot but do you happen to know where I can catch sheep's head from the shore that's not crowded like a pier

    I'm not too sure on where you can catch sheepshead from shore as I struggle with finding one too. People have told me some anglers have caught some sheepshead in Rudee Inlet under that bridge. I've also been told there has been sheepshead caught at Buckroe pier while people were trying to catch spadefish. Hope this helps.
