Keeping Fiddler Crabs Alive Long Term (Crabitat 2.0)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

For a full list with purchase links of all the gear I use go to: www.southernreels.com/fishing...
In this video I show how I keep my fiddler crabs that I catch for bait alive long term. This is an updated video on what I have learned about keeping them year round.
In the colder months you will have to provide a heat source for the crabs. Some type of heat lamp will work for this.
If you have issues with raccoons and such getting into them you can build a mesh wire top for the habitat to protect them.
If you can get tidal sand (sand off an actual beach) it's better that using the sand I used in the video. It has nutrients in the sand that are beneficial. I didn't have access to that so I used regular play sand.
I have listed everything I used with links below.

Amazing what you can do with a little research and hands on technology. You created a great habitat to keep your bait alive and available for fishing. Maybe eels can be your next venture. I'm doing some research to start eel farming in Florida.

Hey buddy great video I have a question do you have to keep the dirt moist or dry for keeping fiddler crabs long term ? Also I have a large ice cooler and I drilled a bunch of holes in the lid for the waste to exit the cooler and fresh air to enter do u thank that will work or will I need to keep the lid open at all times any help I would appreciate it

I love fiddler crabs for bait. I researched this very thing and found out that it is NOT necessary to put food and trays of water for them to stay alive. Feeding them causes you to have to clean the sand which is a pain in the ass, I would suspect. If you use riverbed or creek bed sand (not clean sand for construction), like where you catch them , that provides enough nutrients to sustain them for months. They sift the sand with their claws and eat the nutrients in the soil. The best set up I've seen had about 3 5gallon buckets of natural sand loaded with nutrients put in a large container, similar to the pool, no drain necessary, won't stink cause you don't feed the them. Spray water on sand regularly and they come up and out of their network they build under the sand and feast on the nutrients. I will put a link to the best on I have seen. If you kayak fish you may have seen this guy (Nick) who owns NAVARRE KAYAKING. To be clear I am not criticizing your set up. It makes complete sense to do this way, but if I kept information to myself that I know could be HELPFUL and save you time and aggrevation... I'm doing a disservice. Besides, it will give you time back to spend fishing!! kzread.info/dash/bejne/lIFmmMaJgtSwgqg.html

Oh and a tip for removing chlorine from tap water if you can't find the aquarium stuff is to just boil it for 15 minutes. Boiling drives out the chlorine and chloramines. Or you can put it in a bucket and leave it in the sun for a few hours

I usually pop the big claw off and save them. The big sheepshead like that bigger fiddlers, the smaller ones like the smaller fiddlers. If you run out the big claws you saved work great, just crack them open with some pliers to get the juices flowing and hook it how ever you can and they will hit that as well

You could take a piece of dig in landscaping edging and cut it like two inches high and glue it at an angle contour it up the sides a bit. That’ll hold the sand back and separate the water. It’ll keep the water clean longer. And you’ll be able to keep your sand in place. I did it with turtles worked great.
