1:45 I disagree that being unpredictable always makes someone a bad leader because all these laws can be tailored to the situation and personality of the person. And most of them have reversals that are also situational and personality dependent. I get that your saying it is bad leadership trait even if it increase your power, and normally that would probably be true. Like if you have a narcissist boss that makes the life of there employees terrible. But there are circumstances where a good leader would want to be unpredictable with not only his outside advisories, but with his subordinates as well. This is probably more true in high stress environments like the military, but there are probably good examples in the corporate world to. When my brother was leading combat patrols in Iraq he would find random things that were not done right while prepping the vehicles to get on his guys about. He was a platoon leader on a 2010 deployment with the same national guard company that he had been an e4 Joe with during a 2005 deployment. So he knew all the things people would sham on or be lazy about. One of his favorites was flipping his shit if boxes of muffins were brought for snacks but weren’t tied down incase of getting hit by ied’s. His reason for being kind of random for what he would get mad about when prepping for a mission was that he wanted to keep people on there toes. His first deployment they were constantly hit with ied’s and had several soldiers get killed. His second deployment was not as bad because it was post surge and the area they were in was not hot. So he would be a little unpredictable to keep people on there toes and from being complacent. Also, there are plenty of examples from trump to numerous others that used unpredictability to get ahead in business and politics.

I don’t think you guys understand that he wrote this book as a shadow representation of what people actually do to gain power. Some of which you have to be willing to do yourself, and some you need to be aware of to recognize in other people. He wrote it to educate politically naive people on what people actually do to gain power so you can better understand the motives of people around you. The goal was to honestly explain to people the dirty side of human nature most books (and channels like yours) pretend doesn’t exist when making list of leadership rules for people to follow. The book is suppose to enlighten people so they make more realistic and smarter pragmatic decisions in life as to how you will interact with other people. He is not saying you should be a raging psychopath because those people would not need to read a book like this to begin with. It’s like you only read the intro paragraphs or you didn’t understand the book or it’s purpose. The worse people are often those that have no power because they make all the mistakes in this book until there lives are failed and they turn violent.

Actually, we do know that Robert later in his career makes the "shadow representation" point. If you'd watch our other episodes you'd see that we talk about that many times. The reason we are reviewing this is because MOST READERS don't read it as a defensive strategy, they read it and proudly boast that they DO these things.

@@DaveDurand-fm9qg Ok. That makes a little more sense what you are trying to do. I have met someone like that about 8 years ago, but I would have been better off in that situation if I had read that book prior to being in that job where I worked with him. So I definitely can see there being more people that do as you are saying in more grimy industries like finance, but that would mean someone a little politically naive would definitely need to read and understand this book. But the main premise that this law is bad, or this one is good is what I can’t really agree with because they are situationally dependent. And if you are working with someone who is trying to undermine and destroy your business or career then being cutthroat yourself is often necessary just so they know not to mess with you again. But if you are honest with yourself you have probably done several of these laws without realizing that is what you are doing. For example, if you have ever made an employee sign an NDA and non complete document when hiring them you are essentially following law 15, “crush your enemy totally”. You would just be doing it in a nice standard document business way, and when you eventually lay someone off you can pretend that the purpose of those documents was not to crush anyone. And then you can go make a video saying how sometimes as a business leader you have to make tough decisions for the greater good of the team. But from a practical business standpoint the purpose of those documents is to preemptively ensure that people you let go can’t compete with you or sell your secrets to hurt your business. And those individuals end up having waisted time in an industry they can not stay in. It only take a few career back steps like that and someone might end up being another death of despair statistic. Or at a minimum won’t be able to have a family. So if you read between the lines, if your goal is to ensure that your business is safe, when you lay people off you are essentially crushing them totally from a practical standpoint. It does not mean you destroy there life but simply get them out of the company in a way they can’t then attack you. So when you take a broader view of these laws I hope you can see how it can come off extremely disingenuous when someone says that you should not do law x,y, or z. Because often people trying to say that you should take the high road are essentially doing most of these laws themselves to get where they are. They just justify it to themselves by reading the book to literally so they don’t realize it.

@@Cant_find_good_Handle Great insights and thoughtful. Thanks for taking the time. If you have time, go back and watch the series from the beginning. You will see that I examine each of these for their value and harm. Not one or the other. Some are pretty much all useful, others all bad but many are in between depending on their application. This allows the viewer to be better at both application and prevention. I appreciate the interaction!
