One of these days we will reach a point where there are more Indy releases for the Dreamcast then there were official releases back in the day. I own three Indy releases already, and will be buying more. STAY AWESOME! :)

Flashback? Definitely my favourite cinematic Platformer of all time, simply because of its visuals and soundtrack, even the animation still looks phenomenal.

Original cutscenes were rendered on the fly, that's how it could fit on floppies. CDROM was prerendered in that 90s style like you mentioned. I think the gameplay is dictated by the rotoscoped sprites much like Prince of Persia, once you're used to it it can feel nice and cinematic. If you don't it still feels clunky like it did to you there

Adam you saying this isn’t your game saddens me.....it’s like hearing someone say they don’t like Shenmue.....so wrong. You got to know that game and it became your favorite of all time. Flashback you just need to get to know the controls. Take the time

  • @wonderfulwardy

The problem I personally have with Flashback (and Adam would probably agree with me here) is that you feel like your always struggling or fighting with the controls way more then the actual game itself. I feel this now, and I felt it way back in the days of owning a Genesis / Mega Drive. The game was getting top reviews around the day of release due to it's graphics and cinematics which was fasinating (and almost 3D looking) which drew many people in, but for someone like myself who was more fixed on actual playability before anything else, It didn't sit well with me, especially when a UK magazine (EGM? can't remember the one) rated it no.1 in a top 100 Mega Drive games of all time over Sonic 2. I find this game is all style (wow factor) and no real lasting gameplay substance. The modern version would be something like 'Beyond 2 Souls' or any other cinematic crap that David Cage puts out. Look amazing, great story, great graphics and eye candy, but an empty shell of a game if you really look deep enough.

Charlie Ward there is barely another game where I have tight and precise control of my character. I just learned it, that’s all. There is Prince of Persia style control here. You can walk in exact increments and you can climb down from ledges easily. You can draw your weapon immediately upon landing on the ground. You push up and A (Genesis) to jump easily across something. You hold down the run button and just tap right or left and you automatically run towards and grab onto a ledge. Turning around with your gun drawn is easy and quick. I’m telling you, if you’re fighting with the controls, you simply haven’t taken 10 minutes or so with the instruction manual and gotten it down

  • @wonderfulwardy

    @wonderfulwardy

    6 жыл бұрын

Maybe, but from what I took from it, I just cannot get to grips with the controls and I know I'm also not alone in this. I am not a casual gamer either and I play lots of games from various genres and systems both modern and retro so I know what to look out for, and what interests me in a certain game. The big thing this game was pushing at the time of release was it's graphics and cinematics which didn't suck me in like it did to many others. I would rather play a game that has fine tuned intuitive controls that are real easy to pick up and play from the start, but difficult gameplay to fully master. Unfortunately, these felt difficult and un-intuitive from the start which is not the way you make good game design in my humble opinion. Yes you are right about one thing, it feels very much like those old Prince of Persia games which again, I could never seem to get into. The controls and twitchy sluggesh movements of the characters in these sorts of games test my patience and not in a good way. Games that I have played throughout my years with (what I believe to be) near-perfect intuitive game controls that actually feel very pickup and play but with lots more depth to master and discover are:- Sonic Genesis titles Ristar Rocket Knight Adventures Super Mario World Street Fighter Alpha 3 and SFIII Third Strike Daytona USA (Arcade) Virtua Fighter series Mario Kart: Double Dash Those are just a handful of games right there which anyone could pick up and play while getting used to the game in less then a minuite, but will find sooooo much added depth throughout mastering them. That is good game design with intuitive controls.

Charlie Ward well I gotta say, if the controls are keeping you from playing this, that’s a crying shame. Because this is a really amazing experience. With puzzles as satisfying as any Tomb Raider game, a fun storyline that borrows inspiration from Total Recall, I had a lot of fun getting through it. The frustration factor did wane on me. In fact, getting through the jungle felt like such an accomplishment because it took a while to get used to things and figure it out. But that’s the thing I like, I guess. Trying until I get it. Everyone is different. I say keep trying. And perhaps I would also say, get the right version. If you have a Sega CD, burn a copy of the game and play it. That version has an exclusive soundtrack and voiceovers for every character which added to the immersion

Well I am going through a unique rom hunt discovery phase once again. I just found out about a game called 'Go Dizzy Go' which I am really enjoying right now. what first looked like a silly Pac-Man Clone was actually an interesting twist and unique game. So yea, when I get to Mega CD, I will download and try Flashback for Sega CD for that bit more immersion. :) I don't expect to enjoy it due to the controls and how I prefer my games to be in general:- aka. 'easy-pick-up-and-play-and-difficult-to-master-with-a-ton-of-depth' but I promise you I will give it one more shot on Mega CD.

To anyone or Adam Koralik reading this. I have an issue regarding my Sega Dreamcast. I recently bought a copy of Sonic Adventure but when I boot it up on the console, it shows the Dreamcast logo and then the SEGA logo and then it sends me back to the console menu. And every other official copy of my Dreamcast games work however. I once had an official copy of Sonic Adventure years ago and it gives me this current issue. Is there a solution to it?

Flashback is one of only a handful of games on the MegaDrive which I completed. It had a good story, looked nice & the gameplay mechanic (borrowed from the Prince of Persia games) was unique at the time. I enjoyed it very much. Later, Delphine Software released the Oddworld/Abe's Odyssey series which used essentially the same mechanic. I enjoyed those too.

Flashback was never an action platformer. Its more of a puzzle platformer. Once you get used to the controls you get, for the time, an amazing journey. The crappy cgi cutscenes you see are the "updated" cutscenes that was made for the Sega CD version. Best to switch it back to the rotoscoped animation that aged way better.

It's a cinematic platformer. There are lots of them, and the first one was the original Prince of Persia. And the original Flash Back was on the SNES.

For what it's worth, I really think you should persist (with the original cutscenes, by the way!): it _will_ pay off. At least be sure to finish the second level. When you've done that and you've really had enough, so be it... (Finishing the first level isn't easy either, I know. If all else fails you can just use a code to get to the second.)

wait, wasn't flashback already avaiable for dreamcast?. maybe I saw it on an emulator, the game was on snes, megadrive, amiga (I think) and PC. I played it a lot on PC. it's a good game, give it a chance, it's like blackthorne, prince of persia or out of this world.

now I remember, there was a fan-made port called "reminiscence" that came out for several systems, maybe that's the one I saw on dreamcast. I have the snes cartridge, the pc version, and if I ever see the megadrive cartridge I'll get it too, I love the game.

the best version is the floppy disk pc version with no fmv, the original animations done in the game engine are better than the weird fmvs. nevermind!. I thought it was a port of the "full cd" version that had fmvs instead of cartoony animations. now I see, it plays the animations. edit 2: hahaha, now I see the port has the two versions.

innovation made an all in one adapter that: allows you to use PS1/PS2 pads/sticks (the analogs work too), Saturn pads/sticks, AND has ports for both keyboard and VMU. i have had it for years and i have yet to find any compatibility issues. i believe adam has a vid on it. The USA one i have has an innovation branding on it. I have another from the UK and its branded as "Dreamconnector". the prices on ebay can be all over the map with these things...so i would be patient. i got both for under 20 bucks.
