That was ridiculous. No warm-up, no rehearsal, no warning, and she delivered a simply amazing rendition of that beautiful song. She looked like she was a million miles away, completely in the zone. Wow, wow, wow.

I absolutely love her, and I’ve never in my life been attracted to women, but I’m so attracted to her. The person, the honesty, the personality, and her voice is so beautiful. Well of course they did, assuming they were watching the show because KD was the guest. She is quite famous.

Not warmed up, not rehearsed, not practiced with the band, and she utterly crushes that massive song! KD's version of "Hold my beer!" :)

She hit those notes with no effort and with such emotion!!!

Omg! This kd lang her voice just brought me to tears ... she sings so beautifully almost better than Roy .. that song is amazing. Love ur voice kd lang..

In those days I worked in the music department of the show. As I recall the band completely ad-libbed the backing and did a masterful job. Normally the band had all the music in front of them and they and the artist had nine rehearsals. KD didn't have any at all. Her performance was one of the most pivotal in the many years I worked on the show. She is a real star.

The band worked all the time on that show, as I understand it. They were old session pros, and doubtless had brushed up on her recordings of that song. They really nailed the background, and helped deliver what I still consider to be kd's best rendition of that song. Kudos to all who made that happen.

She just has a little chat, gets up and slays that song. Unreal.

I think KD is probably one of the most underrated performers of all time. She has such a pure and soulful voice. Just God given talent right there

I didn't say she was average! I said that she has not released any new material in yrs. She took her celebrity and used her platform to run down the huge beef industry in western Canada. She is a born Albertan the largest producer and they hate her. Sometimes people should know when to bite their tongue ! You couldn't sell a kd record there even today!

Her breath control is amazing!

I've been a k.d lang fan since her debut album, her voice is simply the greatest in our generation and no other female artist today compares to her range, depth and control. Powerful, yet gentle, you feel every emotion from start to finish. Breathtakingly beautiful, this version of Crying is the best I've seen anywhere else, she is magnificent!

I would love to hear her sing the National Anthem.....the way it SHOULD be sung. I dislike most of the show offs who ruin it for me. I believe she is one of the greatest artists of our time. A female Orbison. Both sang from their soul and made real music. Love their duet together.

Well, I can die now after hearing that. What a MASTERFUL singer and consummate musician. She has such incredible power one moment and angelic tenderness the next -- and that WTF vocal range! She sings with such heart-rending passion but never oversings a song or rushes the melody - a real PRO. She even directs the orchestra at 4:48 because they were playing too loud and at 5:09 to play louder when she's bringing it home for the finish. No one sings this song better, not even Orbison. Holy shit.

She is utterly amazing! To sing like that with no warm-up, no warning, no rehearsal. What a true pro and a rare talent. I have loved her forever. I saw her live once only a few rows from the stage. The sound went out and she continued to sing a capella and unamplified. Just glorious! This is such a beautiful song, and she delivered it with such emotion. She has no match.

She is one of THE BEST singers I have ever heard. She lives in the song and brings it to a living breathing place. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!

If thats the rusty, unrehearsed version….WTF…..The great ones make it look easy I guess.

Her signature song. Wow. But what a performance for something totally unrehearsed. Geoff Harvey's incredible ensemble of musicians & KD absolutely slayed it. ... goosebumps on the soul.

I'm sure Roy know she did "his" song more than justice. In my opinion to sing a heartbreak song u need a little extra in ur voice & that lady has it in spades. Wish she'd make a comeback. She's has the most INCREDIBLE voice

I cannot take my eyes off her when she performs. I love that when she uses the full power of her voice, she has to move the mic down to waist level - and I get chills when she does it. What a treat it must have been to be there and hear her.

Hope this helps. I'm seeing her in Hull on the 13th for her UK and Ireland tour. Literally been waiting to see her live for 14 years now, ever since I was 6. xx

Okay. She hadn't warmed up her voice... had NEVER sang with this bad... and she still sounded like an angel. What a great sport she is! Most singers would have said no. This sounded so good... it's too bad it wasn't released on DVD. Love her.

one of the best voices of the last century

KD's voice is so beautiful. She's my favorite female vocalist. She gives an amazing performance.....her face and hands are so expressive. I watch this video over and over.....one of my favorite songs - KD does honor to Roy Orbison's song. I think she is gorgeous in this video. The best I've ever seen her look.

I love her and her voice. I love, love how she seemed to tell the band to slow and low it, that was absolutely awesome. Wow!

Holy crap, for an unrehearsed, spontaneous request after not singing for a long time, Lang sure nailed that song to perfection. This could be made into a CD.

Yup. She said she had not sung in quite a while which why she was hesitant to perform.

salamanca1954 to the best of my knowledge (I'd say I'm 99% on this) then it IS as I posted. It's been ages (and was just 16 when this filmed) and had forgotten he did this and I'll double check with Derryn himself but yes, this really was unrehearsed. He's sort of known for being random, long story but he's a pollie now (main policies are public sex offender register, animal welfare, violence against women and kids, voluntary euthanasia) so I knew him before from all of that. Now I know his political side (he got in) as my best friend is one of his lead candidates. But yes, back then he was known for doing this and she said she suspected so probably did actually warm up but the whole point is he likes to see who people really are, so no, he wouldn't have said she was to perform as he didn't always drop them in it. There are a few cringeworthy ones when he did the same and that person relied a LOT on backup and modification, he likes putting people on the spot. He would have known she'd do it easily, she genuinely has an incredible voice.

I believe you are correct. I understand people say I haven’t sung in 12 years or I haven’t whatever and I’ve never sang with this band.. and sometimes things like that are set up for whatever reason the The bottom line is she delivered a blowout performance and that’s all I care about. I wish we didn’t have to go through all the pretense but oh well it is what it is I love K.D Lange!! Love when she sang with Lyle Lovett…

This perfomance was my absolute favourite, I have seen her in concert but watching and hearing this just resonates within me!

K.D. Lang and Shirley Bassey are my favorite female singers of all time. Seen both of these greats back in the day in their prime. I thought this impromptu version was marvelous and just a little different with this arrangement...it felt very intimate. Have seen KD with Roy in concert together. There are no words. Much like seeing an Elvis concert. Such talent.

K.D. Land - "The Velvet Voice" You can't get any better than this voice. Everything she does is velvet.

How much perfection can you possibly tolerate in one performance. She gives it her best, which is more than a miniscule of performers could do. The deceased Roy Orbison would have been madly clapping in the background.

There's a splendid video of the two of them singing this together. It always makes me cry, partly for sadness but partly for beauty.

Girl just moved me to tears. Wonderful voice and so under appreciated. One of the greats.

It's been a while since I felt the energy of KD Lang but the moment she started singing I was right back there. Totally mesmerized. What an extraordinary talent.
