KCLO4(Potassium Perchlorate)

Sodium Chloride is electrolysized to render Sodium Perchlorate in a single run. A rewound "MOT" is used with a pi filter for the power supply. Power supply quality is checked under load with an oscilliscope. DC ripple is less than 1/10 volt. The electrolysis voltage is kept above 6 volts and the current is maintained at 25 amps. Total run time was 180 hours. Solution temp was 85-90C.
Electrolyte consisted of 1140g of sodium chloride (table salt) dissolved in 4L of distilled water. All of the electrolyte was run through the 3L cell over the course of 7 1/2 days.
At 144hours run time, a test for perchlorate was done using Methylene blue. A strong presence of perchlorate was indicated by violet color. The cell run continued for an additional 36 hours.
The electrolyte was hot filtered to remove the white flock that accumulated on the bottom of the cell and then boiled in a beaker for 45 minutes. The 3L solution was divided in half. 1500mL of electrolyte and a boiling 2 liter solution containing 2 lbs. of KCL were combined in a 5 liter beaker. This metathesis mixture was left to cool to room temp and then cooled in a refrigerator. The accumulated crystals were filtered and thoroughly washed with distilled water. The yield was approximately 980g. Another test with methylene blue on the result strongly indicated perchlorate.

@@pro2a89it's pretty easy to make with other means, but this method shown in the video is a bit dangerous because thought he's using low voltage, he's still using a high amp density. Special electrodes are needed to survive that amount of current long enough to get an appreciable amount of product. This is why most amateur chemists go for a much safer decomposition and double displacement route.

after 144 hours yea it would convert all your salt into chlorate and some perchlorate with an overall CE of 83% which means your salt also contains CaCl2 just like mines and that also explains why your cathode has white crusts on it. CaCl2 is the new pH control for amateur cells but is avoided in industry due to pipe clogging and passivation due to their electrodes being much closer together and ran longer in continuous manner.

I run mine 330 hours approximately 14 days but it was 6litre bath at 25 to 30 amps and lost 1.5 liter during the process at 75 to 90 degrees electrolyte temp without ph control using platinum coating anodes and Titanium cathodes... When i finish it and got cool down i got big size rocks on the bottom orthorhombic shape and none kcl03... It precipitate out, imagine how saturated was the electrolyte. And it was greenish blue which indicates from mine opinion that it doesn't had any cloride left un-electolized i guess ! What do you think for this set up and the hole process and results?? if you use graphite then only pH control will solve errosion it and with that you have 2 options HCl or CaCl2 HCl requires pH regulator system but CaCl2 doesnt although its weird as for the first few hours pH will stay at 8-8.7 then it will suddently drop to 6.6-6.8 due to the small amount of NaOH causing a reaction that will regulate the pH when NaOH encounters CaCl2 it forms Ca(OH)2 which is insoluble and liberating chlorine in place of NaCl thus pH now is regulated. after the pH drop it will be steady and will no longer rise for the duration of the run resulting in current efficiencies of 78-83%

hi, i want to make NaClO4 directly from NaClO3, and i read that, to get the chlorate concentration very low, it is a bad idea to use platinum, because this will corrode very badly in low chlorate concentration, (near the end of the process). so i would need PbO2 coated titanium right? as an anode, and titanium as cathode. my power supply is also 150 watts, but it has less voltage, only 5. i hope this won't be a problem. anyway, do you have any tips on where to get good electrodes, because i can't seem to find any, other than on www.alibaba.com, and that's not for consumers. inerts, these things are nasty and can ruin MMO electrodes if you dont clean your electrodes with 3% HCl after every few runs. pH control prevents them from causing too much problems but the yellow color here suggests ferrocyanide and iodate impurity since he probably is running store bought salt. The best impurity you actually want is CaCl2 as it allows for passive pH control better than HCl for pH control since its a buffer and doesnt require a full blown pH regulator system just add some and forget about it.

So if I made kclo3, can I do a double displacement with potassium chloride to create kclo4? I'm just confused, I did electrolysis with potassium chloride. I know it only made potassium chlorate hence the methylene blue test. But all the reading I do is the same as this using sodium. Oh and I bubbled the chlorine gas through concentrated h2o2 and it made hydrochloric acid. So that was a nice side of my experiment. I thought if I ran my cell for a long period time with high heat. It would of made kclo4. I'm using a platinum anode. Idk if you could be awesome and help. I would appreciate it.

  • @ytmachx

    @ytmachx

the displacement reaction is the sodium being replaced with the more favorable /active potassium. The kclo3 is too insoluble to stay in solution to further electrolysize to kclo4. You would start with the sodium chloride and run it until you have sodium perc and then do the displacement reaction with kcl to get the insoluble kclo4.

I'm a bit confused too. Pretty sure that would just produce potassium chlorate

You are running at 150 watts, so as long as you are above 4.5 VDC, you can get production? Is there an upper practical limit to voltage that you should adhere to? 12VDC @ 12A would be ok, since it is 144 W? Thank you!

Hey Jerry, it is a long time ago. What makes a chlorate is the current not the voltage. So, 5-volt LED power supply from Amazon or eBay that is 20 Amp to 40 Amp is the best. Current density depends on the surface area of the Anode! (Graphite requires a much lower current density than MMO or Platinum. Good 6.3V DC Large Can Electrolytic Capacitor 450000mfd and up will work as a filter capacitor, or you can make a DC pi filter (look up on KZread). Minimum of 3.6Volt is required for production of chlorate - but the chlorate cell has internal resistance, to overcome the resistance you need more volt; 5 volt is Ok, 6 Volt is Max.

I think you should add a few drops of concentrated sulfuric acid to some solid potassium perchlorate. It might be a good demo!

i really wish i had a scope, my computer can do it but no way am i hooking anything up to this baby . i do have a power factor meter , they cost 25$ . its basicly a power meter to check the power consumption of household appliances. menards has the best it will even tell you the cost of operation at chosen kwh ratings.

VERY smart man, i also encountered harmonic distortion on high current low voltage DC power supplies, however i was to lazy to learn the equations and build an inductor and i couldn't afford a large dc capacitor, however i did just decide to rap some wire inside a mot to make one on a try and see basis and it worked , i went from a .3 power factor to a .7 not bad at all for a first try the equations are very easy but how many henries is my mot running at???thats the research part ...

i see. i buy from FlinnScientific. they sell all types of chemicals, beakers, flasks, and other science apparel. also they have kits to perform the experiments that are already set up. but they only ship to schools. luckily, my dad works at ISU. there prices are amazing. their 2l beakers are pretty good. the best ive seen.

@GunPhysicschlorates are really dangerous with sulfur and phosphorous. but perchlorates are relatively safe around them. perchlorates are much safer in the use of pyrotechnics. i prefer perchlorates over chlorates by a long shot.

very interessting! but I thought by the elektrolysis of NaCl-water, the NaCl is turned to NaOH, Cl2, H2, and not chlorate or perchlorate, or is this adoption wrong?

  • @sambo4348

Wouldn't it be enough to use AC for this with both platinum electrodes? I have read that for chlorates you need the electrodes pretty close. It is great that it is working for you, but with AC you'd have all ions on both electrodes. Granted, maximum current would not be continuous.

What is wrong with you? Do you think that has not been tried? Like 75 years ago? It does not work. You would just end up destroying two electrodes. The platinum will not tolerate a negative charge.

I made two assumptions when i made my calculation: Assumption 1: max yeild of KClO4 was 19.51 mol (from the moles of NaCl). Assumption 2: All of the NaCl(aq) was electrolysized during the process. If the assumptions are false then sorry bout dat.
