I've had that model zx14 now for 7 years and although it is heavy in turns compared to my wifes 600 it handles really well for its size, especially if you are prepared to move around on the bike... and the acceleration out of the corners is ridiculous. I moved from smaller bikes (900's)to this as i do a bit of freeway work, the the better gearing for that is far more relaxing. I used to swap bikes every few years but don't feel the need with this beastie... nice review, good to see a different perspective.

I don't know if anything can catch this bike, in first gear with wide open throttle it comes up at 6000rpm, I still cant go to redline in 2nd or 3rd, I feel lite headed with the brutal acceleration as the front wheel is a foot off the ground the whole time over 6000 rpm, not to mention its hard to pull on the clutch to change gears as you are holding on for dear life. When I leave the house I don't know if I will make it back, not exaggerating. I guess that is why I love it. Its the ultimate.

If you putter around at the bottom of the rev range, sure all you're going to notice is that it's heavier than your 650. Regarding the handling, your friend needs to crank up the rear spring preload and drop the forks in the triple clamps a bit.

After the k&n filter, exhaust and moore mafia tuned ecu the bike feels even better. no top speed limiter, lowered fan turn on temp and now 200hp at the rear tire.

The steering feels heavy for sure if your not use to it. I test ride one and immediate noticed I was struggling a bit. Then I said ok it's one of those bikes that needs physics to come into play. Well after 10 minutes I was fine. Counter steering and leaning is what she likes best. Now my 2008 Sprit ST 1050 is a sweetheart to ride and does not need any thought about steering dynamics. It's very easy and friendly and loves corners. That bike feels much lighter then it is considering it's only 60 pounds less then the zx. The Sprint is pretty nimble for it's size. Love the zx1400 power though. It's a beast and deceptively fast.

The Busa is a 1340cc the ZX14 series 1 and 2 are 1352cc, why are you riding the clutch? It is obvious you have no experience on powerful bikes these are for experienced good riders not a novice. To turn these types of bike you use the throttle in conjunction with the handling as for the power band full power is delivered from 6000 rpm on wards but in your case 3 to 4000 is ample until you get better. I have had my ZX14 since new 2009 and haven't found a more enjoyable bike, by the way the 14R only came out in 2012. Also I would really suggest you do an advanced rider training course because you seem to not understand counter steering.

Dont be put off this wonderfull machine with the copious reviews of slugish/slow handling, good tyres and pressures also get the suspension set up sag wise for your weight with gear on and then give it a go. i Borrowed my mates ZZR1400/ZX14 Few years back and went 2 miles before i came home, absolutely hated the handling on it, sorted out the Static Sag which took 15 min and wow! night and day difference. only problem i have with people reviewing bikes which have not been set up for them is it is totally inacurate. when i buy a bike and pick up i always sort the preload roughly out before riding so dont be put off till suspension sorted for your weight then review and decide 👍👍👌👌

I had a ZX14 for two years. It is big, heavy, cumbersome and not very agile, having a very long wheelbase. It is really not that responsive until you really get into the throttle because it is geared so high to attain a top speed of 190mph. Where are you going to go 190mph? It doesn't make sense for an around town motorcycle. A mid-size naked bike is more responsive up to 100mph, handles better and is more fun to ride, plus the maintenance is easier because you don't have to remove all the fairings to simply change the oil. Unless you are doing a lot of highway cruising or touring, I would recommend a Kawasaki Z900 or Yamaha MT09 naked bike. They are just as fast from 0 to 60mph, and the Z900 is faster than the ZX14 from 70mph to 100mph in high gear because it is geared lower and has a top speed of 150mph, which will get you in plenty of trouble on any highway. Another problem with the ZX14 is it is deceptively fast. With the Z900 or MT09, you know you are going pretty fast, but not as much with the ZX14. I just cranked mine on once getting on the highway and I didn't even think I was going that fast, and I got tagged by the Highway Patrol going 109mph. Whoops! 6 point ticket and $500 fine. It takes real self control not to exceed the speed limit with it, but on the other hand, that is the ONLY thing that is fun about it. It doesn't handle well, and it is cumbersome around town and at stoplights. Driving it at normal speeds is BORING because it seems like a 500cc motorcycle until you awaken the beast, and when you do that I assure you you are going to lose your license. I sold mine and I ride a Z900 now, which is actually a lot more fun and much better around town and in the mountain canyons. Unless you are an excellent rider, you can get yourself in a lot of trouble quick riding the twisties on a ZX14. I know!

When you hop onto a big ZX you have to you re-think things a bit and this is what many just don’t do and it is not smart either. You have a longer wheel base and a heaver bike so your input must match this. It is not realistic to think that those bikes will use the same input as a 650 or even a 1000. Just like going from a R15 (150cc) to a 650cc bike you will have to put more into the bars to get the same result and the 650 will feel heaver and not as easier in a tight turns as a R 15 will. So with this analogy in mind naturally on first impressions a ZX if you’re not thinking about it will be as you expressed. However when you counter steer with muscle to match the weight of those 1400’s they will race on the track as good as any can. It’s all down to the rider and how much time spent on the bike. I have been thinking about putting out a video on my channel explaining the fundamental physics that goes on when one swaps from a light blow around in the wind bike to a heavy solid as a rock bike, as they are two very different understandings on operation. Enter corner speed on the ZX’s is the same as anything it’s the exit grunt and speed that is on tap that kills them all. When riding a ZX 14 at 60, 80 and 100 kph as normal they are one of the most effortless bikes to ride that is ever built on this planet. And to date out the box they are faster than the Hayabusa by just a slight margin.

Steering is heavy only at very slow speeds, due to physics. Bike is heavier than a 600cc so it gives that feeling but once you open the trottle it's not heavy at all, I find it extremely nimble for it's size and weight (2006 ZZR1400 owner for 9 years, 100k km / 62 k miles ridden).

I think it's inappropriate to say "too powerful for the road". If that's true, then so is any Corvette, Ford Mustang GT (and above), let alone every single Exotic Sport/Hyper car ever made. If you want to say "too powerful for most people", I think that's fair.

No those are absolutely too powerful for road use, especially in Australia. If you can't leave first gear without losing your licence, then they're not great ideas as road vehicles. They're cool, and we like them, but if we're being honest with ourselves they're bad decisions

First of all it’s never to powerful for the roads, thing is you are controlling the throttle it’s up to you no matter what !? It never could be the bike fault, if anything we’ve seen often in a curve as exemple ! The bike starting to wobble and the rider was ejected and suddenly the bike stop wobbling and continued into the curve almost perfectly without any rider on it ! I had a ZX-14R 2013 that had 210 HP and 126 lbs of torques it’s was the perfect highway TGV so comfortable and never have to downshift, not the most nimble but could hold his own in twisty roads, but for travelling the perfect weapon. 😍😍😍😍
