witness was experimental, everyone turned against her and said she should go back to her old sound. smile was more of her sound and now everyone's saying she should experiment.. honestly katy deserves better

while i agree that people are being unfair, witness sonically was not experimental, just its political themes (which were devoid of substance). and this album just fails to explore on a sound she’s previously established like 3 albums ago. it’s fine for some... just boring.

The thing with Katy is that the hits overshadow the rest of the album songs. The singles of Teenage Dream overshadowed the rest of the album, same with PRISM. With Witness the single selection was weak (except for Chained To The Rhythm), and Smile sounds boring at first, but katy albums grow on you, one day you can get one song stuck in your head and suddenly one day you could start liking the whole album. That happened to me with Save As Draft (Witness), Hummingbird Heartbeat (Teenage Dream) and Ghost (PRISM)

this album is "sonically safe" because back in 2017 when she decided to explore more on witness the critics were so bad that katy went depressed and that’s what the album smile is about, she healed or is healing from depression and finally got back her smile. honestly i found this album really amazing and can we say that she did the whole promotion of the album and those 7 millions videos she released 9 months PREGNANT? katy deserve the world. my favs: never really over, cry about it later, not the end of the world, only love and what makes a woman

I liked the singles off of Witness. Sonically, was not good at all. People just have opinions and they just happened to not like Witness. Lyrically it was really good. But Smile is better. Not 100% in love with the production, but it’s a whole lot better because production AND lyrics are the key. Not just one or the other.

I actually idk, in my opinion, this is Katy’s best project. She had so many catchy songs and she had said that she would revisit her old sound of teenage dream and prism and add some of her personal touch bc she was called a flop after witness. Those two albums were legendary so what she ended up with was legendary but to me it didn’t sound dated. I didn’t find the new songs sounding similar with her older ones, I just noticed that they were influenced by some of their elements. Like again I don’t mean to hate on Ajay bc I love her reactions but those are my thoughts.

The purpose of the album wasn’t meant to be a “new sound” type album, it’s a healing album. She received a heavy amount of backlash after Witness, but she avoided the negative and focused on the positive in her life. She gave us Smile to show that we are strong, resilient people that aren’t alone in this world, and to never give up. Focus on this album as a recovery journey. The lack of "abundant" promotion if you can blame the record company, but at this point, seeing from Witness's poor reception, they are worried about losing money and now they are focusing more on Halsey since she does move for now larger audiences despite the fact that his music is not completely commercial.

Cry about it later just hits different and I love the use of songs that sound sampled from other female artists such as Banarama in Not the end of the world. It feels inclusive and just a sweet wholesome album. A sort of walk down memory lane in regards to Katy's past albums. Witness still bops to some extent but this album beats it by so much it's awesome!! Yea and the problem is that Smile is NOT really “old KP”. Her classic sound is over the top, campy, anthemic POP songs, not this sappy safe unimaginative dance shite. And people didn’t criticized Witness because she finally changed up her sound, they criticized it because what she changed it to was pretentious, lyrically misguided and ultimately boring sounding. Smile could have been amazing if more songs on the album retained Never Really Over’s oomph, instead of flaming out right after the lead single.

@@marcosta4285 essentially all of katy perry's discography can easily fall into an overarching pop/edm umbrella genre, including many of the songs you listed from witness. mind maze was experimental edm (gone wrong, imo), tsunami was disco/dream pop, bigger than me was definitely just pop with edm elements, into me you see was a pop ballad, pendulum was just pop with 80s synths, and miss you more was also just a pop ballad. witness was an amazing album imo that didn't deserve the reception it got, and it definitely differentiates itself from katy perry's other albums, however, it doesn't really demonstrate the kind of evolution that it takes for an artist to stay at the top of the charts for 7/8+ years, like ariana did with her most recent two albums, especially with smile reverting back to the boring pop style katy had in 2013. for reference, ariana's discography's overarching elements span pop, edm, trap, and rnb, and her individual songs greatly vary with genuine dives into jazz, classical, and almost all of the pop/edm/trap/rnb subgenres, and even some (but rare) rock elements. i don't think katy deserves to be "trashed," however, those who wish the best for her really want to see genuine growth. half of smile sounds like it could have been made in 2013, and that's the main critique. just some of my thoughts.

In my opinion, critics are not focusing on the quality of the songs, lyrics, vocals... they´re only trying to tear her down because she´s "playing safe" or doing "disco like Dua"??? Sorry, but katy´s been doing disco-infused songs since 2010. And she gave us the first trap hit in history with Dark Horse, I think she´s entitled to revisit that sound. I think the album deserves a 7.5./8. It´s not her best but an improvement over Witness, even if the instrumentals are less interesting. The core of the album will stand the test of time better and the songs have more purpose.

My opinion on this album: It’s a very safe album for Katy and that is not a bad thing whatsoever. The way Witness bombed with critics and fans, I feel that Katy wanted to take the safer route and not go out of her comfort zone, and thus this album was born. I do not think this album is bad, I personally love this album and it really does make me smile. It is very calming to listen to and is a fun escape. It’s no teenage dream (but who can top that album), but it really is perfect in its own way. I respect Ajay’s opinion, this album is not everyone’s cup of tea. Overall, this album is for Katy to get back on her feet after Witness, and continue to grow as a person and an artist.

Geez, I've never seen AJay being so criticized this year in comparison to the other years! First it was because of Rain On Me and I remember when people were just trying to cancel her. It's her opinion and she expressed it with honesty! Of course there are things that I agree and disagree with her, that's because it's a OPINION, not a FACT. I read that people criticized Katy when she dropped Witness because it was so different from everything else and they wanted the sound from the past albums. She got depressed because of all this negativity and tried to recover from this with Smile. However, when she dropped it, people criticized the album because it wasn't innovative and didn't show Katy's evolution as an artist. In theory, these people are hypocrites, but that's not AJay's case because she actually liked Witness and the other albums from Katy. The truth is that people will always criticize Katy for not "having" the same success back in the days with Teenage Dream and Prism. Music industry is always changing, so is Katy and she tried it with Witness, but as I said before, people didn't enjoy it. For me, it worked well and this album was just ahead of its time.

The whole compliant about the songs sounding familiar is very reductive. Especially since whole industry just copies one another or takes inspiration. There is only so much you can do in music. No one is original no one is doing something new. Nothing under the sun hasn’t be done by someone else. There’s no unheard song structures chords melodies ect music is music.
