Katie Hopkins | The Cambridge Union

Katie Hopkins in conversation with Katherine Reggler (Head of Event Management Easter 2014), Wednesday 14th May 2014.
Katie Hopkins is a tabloid newspaper columnist, TV personality and MEP candidate who rose to prominence on the back of controversial views she expressed on 'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' and 'The Apprentice'. Never one to shy away from opinions that she argues others wouldn't dare express, her recent comments on social class in Britain led to her being described as an 'insufferable snob and low-life superbitch', although she has personally celebrated her role as a 'conduit for truth'.

maybe because Cambridge are intellectually elite, not for anything like race, class or gender. Cambridge will accept any gender or race or class so long as you are smart. Elitism is believing rich people are better, or white people are better. That is the elitism we Cambridge students fight against. I'm sure there is a black girl smarter than I am who is not at Cambridge simply because in her life she never had the financial or educational advantage I did.

It is indeed ironic, but keep in mind this hype is all over the world, not only at the most prestigious universities in the world, in this case UK/Cambridge. We in the Netherlands have exactly the same problem to deal with, in all our universities, thru out the whole country. So do not pretend, or think, you're special, you're just a part of the rest of the world. Your mentioned issue, is everywhere.

@J130 G810 At my last job, in the Engineering department, research and development of a major manufacturing company . There was a guy that hated me because I even got the job and got promoted twice because I didn't have a degree while he did, in Aeronautics, while we worked in Thermoforming. One day he got his arm stuck in one of the rollers on a machine, rubber rollers mind you. A department full of college graduate engineers, bringing the blow torch over, ready to tear apart this multimillion dollar machine. Not one of them thought to grease the man's arm, including him and slide his arm out of the rubber roller, except me. I stopped them from tearing apart the machine to try greasing his arm up. It worked, his arm slide right out. Needless to say the guy was not grateful or happy about it, instead his hatred and resentment grew even more. He also had a buddy in corporate. I don't work there anymore. Fired for a dumb reason my boss, the head of the department was completely opposed to the decision. On another note, a guy who was caught sabotaging machinery in another plant was not fired either, just banned from that plant. I got into a small fender bender while using the company car and ran home during my lunch with it instead of just where I signed it out for, something everyone did just to not use the gas for their car. My car was broken down.

These Cambridge students showed a disappointing lack of ability to separate logical reality from politics and prejudice. The one who suggested that by inviting a truth speaker was lowering Cambridge standards shows the depths of the malaise in this trendy lefty UK of ours. The whole thing was banal. Equality for women, every day sexism, names at school. Not a single question about defence, world politics, the USA or economics. What a bloody puerile lot of lefties, to judge from the muted howls of those who didn't dare to speak. Katie Hopkins 90% Students 10% And I feel that's being generous to those dreary-minded students.

This comment is some kind of joke, right? "The one who suggested that by inviting a truth speaker was lowering Cambridge standards shows the depths of the malaise in this trendy lefty UK of ours." A reality TV 'star' being brought in by what is supposed to be the best University in the country to give a talk isn't a lowering of standards? "Not a single question about defence, world politics, the USA or economics." ... What did you expect? Should economics students of Cambridge be asking a reality TV star about economics? Should politics students at Cambridge be asking a reality TV star about politics? Hey, why not get Stacey Solomon in to talk about maths while they're at it? Of course these students look bad. They chose to go to this talk, after all.

Honestly, if that's the intellectual capacity of a supposedly great learning establishment, I'm very disappointed. I don't know if I've ever heard so many logical fallacies bandied about before! And what's up with all the interest in the names? Of course she discriminates based on snap calls. Everybody in that room does exactly the same thing. Think otherwise, ask them how many dates they've turned down because they weren't interested in whoever was asking. Yep, they all make snap judgements based on looks and render an immediate dismissal without blinking an eye. That's discrimination and they're perfectly okay with it. Hard to believe that Cambridge was once renowned for developing men of deep thought. Judging by the questions asked, and the insulting language and behavior of the crowd, England is dead and just doesn't know it.

I wonder what happened in her life to stop her being so tolerant of anyone who doesn't fit her Middle Class standards. She reminds me of the WRVS women in the Little Britain sketches who vomit when they find out the Church Fete cakes were baked by a Lesbian, or a Pakistani....or in her case someone Scottish. She says life is too short to tolerate "Taylors" but really who is going live long enough to have enough time to put up with this snobbish idiotic woman.

But why should the UK as a whole be twisted to other cultures. I want China and Japan to be china and Japan not little England and I most certainly do not want the UK to be little Pakistan. Now does that mean I do not want Pakistani people in the UK absolutely not. Britain is a tolerant culture but that does not mean it should be obliterated because you some how feel that people like Hopkins has no place. Now can I ask you are you that unpatriotic that you want the UK to be 50% immigrants.

To answer that question about should your children have the right to choose!?.... No.. to a certain extent if the parent can trust the child. Parents can see better than most children, but children see a lot that parents don't because of the pack of experiences... a lot of young teens only seem to point out what has been tried and proven to be no good, but they use that excuse of everyone else has done it. Look. Get this. My kids watched me make decisions and make choices. They watched me choose what friends were okay or not. They watched me choose what could come into the house or not. So they knew they had to be good choice makers to bring something in the house.. but that was also talked about first. When my kids had ideas, we sat down at night and tore them apart as hard as we could to make the ideas no good... if the idea holds up then we try it. If we destroy the idea, then we go to the next idea. . So as a parent it was my duty to make my kids understand the importance of making decisions about what things you should and should not have in your life. That needs to be trained first before they begin to take on any kind of life to manage. And I taught my kids to read. Kids willl never Accomplish at all if they dont understand what they are reading and have short attention spans. It's important to teach and coach self control in then also. A person that can not control their emotions or feeling long enough to have a conversation or real heart to heart talk, then they have a problem.

You sometimes have to meet people where they are. She is a woman who will not understand calm and rational. You have to be rude in order to for her to hear you.-- They went wrong when they invited her. She doesn't belong there; she's not an intellectual.

But have you ever seen a single instance where being rude and attacking her has ever phased her or changed her opinion? Attempting to win the crowd dosen't affect her either, she's someone who's solid in her beliefs and the only way you should engage is in a debating format. As for calm she's quite calm at all times I've yet to see her scream or raise her voice, rational? Rationality is defined by where you come from and what you know. All based on beliefs someone with different beliefs can easily be seen as irrational from your perspective, it comes back to attempting to understand and reaching out to try and make that contact, even if you don't agree with that point, its just as valid as your own.

She says I don't offend anyone, you choose to be offended. She said she was afraid of fat people then said she is not fond of Scottish people. Don't be offended or don't watch. She usually comes all the way around to tell you real things in the world to be upset with.

Katie Hopkins is a modern day hero. She's not afraid to speak the truth. I agree with most of the things that she says, it isn't possible or likely that I would like everything that she or anyone says but I'm with her on most things. She has the courage to speak out that which most of us are afraid to say. Women are in the strongest position to save our country, they have a shield of protection that men haven't got. We need Katie and more women to stand up for UK. As to these students? I can't really pass judgement on them because they are basically kids. Who knows what they'll be doing in the future. It's not real life where they are right now. It's the quiet students in the background that are the ones that will really make a difference. The teachers pets with over inflated egos aren't the ones to watch. Katie is very brave to put herself in front of these students and as I say, some of the less outspoken students are the ones that will gain from her talk. Keep up your good work Katie Hopkins and try to recruit more women to your fold.
