KATARA TOWER: Qatar’s New Landmark of Luxury and Perfection on the Arabian Gulf | WELT Documentary

Ғылым және технология

The Katara Tower, Doha. After 10 years of planning and construction, these two towers are a symbol of Qatar on the Arabian Gulf. In just 12 weeks, two luxury hotels will open on 37 floors each, with almost 500 suites and hotel rooms as well as 18 restaurants, bars and cafes. Money is no object- as the goal is to surpass all previous mega-hotels on the Gulf. With the world's largest chandelier at a height of 57 meters and the world's only multimedia kaleidoscope in a hotel lobby, there are only 80 days left to finish on time. An almost impossible task for Christian Hirth, the German manager of both hotels. Despite construction sites everywhere, the team and Christian Hirth are meticulous in their attention to detail and ensure that everything is absolutely perfect before it opens. Two weeks before the opening, the 1,130 employees from 73 countries finally see their uniforms for the first time. Join us as we explore this mega-hotel, the new landmark of Doha.

As an Ex Hotel GM , who opened a luxury hotel or two and spent years managing hotels in the Middle East and Asia, I recognize lots of the pre-opening stress, the endless lists of things " to do" the co-ordination requirements between suppliers, differing departments, owners, prospective guests, government folk who want a peak and the one abiding knowledge that there just isnt enough time. And probably that opening date wasnt within your control and that you wish there were 3 months more. etc......

I hope they paid you well, as well as all the other 8000 workers. The hotel will charge an arm and a leg to stay and dine there, but unfortunately the workers who built it and now service it will only benefit from that place when they leave, if they leave, that they can put it in their C.V. Other than that, the money won’t be worth the stress and vigorous training they will endure.

Around a thousand years ago Imam Muhammad Al Ghazali told story of a man walking in the jungle. A roaring lion ran towards him and the man ran as fast as he could to escape from it. He noticed a well in front of him and he jumped inside hoping to escape from the lion. As he was falling inside the well, he grabbed onto the rope and saved himself. The man was so relieved but when he looked down he saw a big snake at the bottom of the well. It had its jaws wide open ready to swallow him up. The man then looked up and saw two mice nibbling at the rope. A black mouse and a white were both chewing into the rope. The scary lion was still prowling outside the well. The man's heart was pounding as he wondered how he could escape from this. Then he noticed a honeycomb in front of him which had delicious honey dripping from it. He stuck his finger into the honey and put it inside his mouth. It was delicious and for a moment he forgot about the lion, the snake and the two mice chewing at the rope. Imam Ghazali explained that the lion is like the angel of death which is always looming above us. The snake was like his grave which all humans will face. The black mouse and white mouse were like the day and night which are always nibbling at our life (the rope). The honey was like this dunya (this temporal world) which with its momentary sweetness makes us forget the death and the eternal life.

I’m so glad there are people that can do all the little things that makes ones stay amazing. To the little candies/snacks left in the room to house keeping that has to clean up after rich slobs. For all of them to still be professionals all while being yelled at by management, at least some of the time, astounds me. There’s a reason why some of us fix things for a living while others create, clean, direct, guide, manage, etc, etc, etc. I like being a mechanic, because my jobs don’t have feelings and have an owner that’s glad you showed up, even though they know it’s costing them money. The people in the service industry are a different breed, an amazing breed, they have to be to want to see people smile. KUDOS to everyone in these industries.

Inspiring for what ? Spending money that you have not had to work hard for. Wasting free oil money. Middle eastern countries have just been enjoying the free oil money over the last 70 years. Party is about to come to an end. Better prepare themselves to work hard, rather than sitting on their back sides and idling.

I've been through this process, I was part of the Emirates Palace contigent team and the Address Hotel Dubai Marina. It was fun and at the same time heart-wrenching. Earlier someone made a comment to that the employees work for long time. Most of them are below 30 and unfortunately not many many of them will still be there in 5-10 years, for private reasons and guest like to see young employees especially at the front of house, housekeeping etc.

If you want the West to patronize the East.....standards of both human rights and luxury will have to be exceptional. The West looks askance at paternalistic societies. After all, it was because of the cruelty of autocratic European societies that the West came to dominate the world. The East must adopt to Western aolues or else perish as oil supplies and need dwindles.

For the people talking about the construction workers , have you seen it with your own eyes or you're just blindly hearing stuff and believing it?? I've lived in Dubai for more than 15 years , sure the workers live in bad conditions , but that's hard labour jobs for ya. It's not a 5 star hotel , they come there for work , not to fool around. Show me any construction site in the world , they live the same way , even worse. Construction workers get breaks and days off most of the time , they always walk and gather around in parks and budget cafes , they walk around in malls and throughout the city just like all the other employees who are on a working visa. So stop spreading misinfo and believing nonsense. Other countries are just jealous of Arab people being the richest in the world and having the safest countries in the world. If the Gulf was so bad , then why does the whole world go there as tourists and job seekers??

But lets not forget that those 8000-10000 claimed construction death figures are absolutely false and those figures are actually of all south east asian people that died in Qatar over a 10 years period of all ages of all genders of all types of work and not just construction worker and that figure was weaponized into a propaganda hit piece that was made and regurgitated by other news companies and spread out of sheer hatred, envy and racism toward Arabs.
