Mr English Insulting or not, he just is what he is: a Mancunian of relatively low intelligence (which is not to say that he doesn't possess a fair amount of common sense, as you can see when Ricky actually finds himself agreeing with Karl on occasion). As Olivia says, there are many guys like that in Manchester with a similar outlook on the world... If you tried to come up with a comedy character such as this, I'm sure you'd see through it pretty quickly - it would not be half as funny for a start... to my mind, the humour comes from the fact that Ricky pushes him just far enough to say the things he does (to which you would probably say "ah yes, that's all part of the act...")

Everyone should stop thinking of Karl as a child. He's a grown, adult man. He's probably done some dark shit in his younger years (like all men do), he's probably hit a woman at some point in his life, he's probably watched hardcore internet pornography at some point in his life, he's probably sworn at Suzanne and called her terrible names at some point in his life... He's not some innocent child - he's a man- and all men are motivated by deep, primal urges... Sorry to ruin your image of Karl, but it's the truth.

From a young balding manc school dropout with zero ambition, someone who planned to live in his first flat for the rest of his life, to meeting Ricky Gervais, becoming his best mate and thrust in front of the world to become a global brand. Something he never asked for and even wanted. What a life.

well in all fairness, isn't the correct phrase "Pet Peeve" not "Pet Hate"? I mean admittedly I was even a little confused for a couple seconds because I've never heard anyone say "Pet Hate" before..."Pet Hate" sounds like you're hating on Pets...so I dunno, although that part is really funny, I can see why he was confused.

@@mmc1086 Karl also laughs in the outtakes of Derek- particularly in one of his scenes with Kev (David Earl); there’s a fantastic clip where he just can’t get through a certain bit, and you can hear Ricky almost dying from laughter, out of shot. Ricky laughs/corpses a lot when filming, but you can tell that he really loved watching Karl crack up, because of how guarded he usually is- at least when filming anything; but he just couldn’t help corpsing during that scene (and a couple of others), which seemed to make Ricky almost giddy with excitement haha.
