This was an incredible episode. My father suffered from depression for a while and remember seeing him. This is one brave guy. Can see his experience in some of my gambling friends. It’s a terrible addiction and destroys lives. Well done you and well done Karl as it’s takes some bollocks to tell the story.

Hope people give this episode the time it deserves. To begin with his stories were funny, but I won't lie, I kept thinking - "what a stupid reason to thrown a career in football away for" But for him to own it and bring himself back from suck a low and talk openly about his troubles. Fair play to him.

What a great episode. He comes across as a fairly normal guy who has fought a constant battle with his demons with zero help or understanding from those around him. As Chris says at the end he would be a great example to put before academy players for what they should be looking out for and the need to seek help as soon as something is not quite right.

@Mr___X I didn't interpret it as he was trying to blame everyone else, I think he's pretty aware of how he's effectively self destructed, I guess he was crying out for help but never sought it probably because he was too naive to realise he was the only person who could help him or at least get help. My immediate reaction was he seems a bit schizophrenic.

Agreed. Shows how we've lost it as a culture as well. The tough love treatment at Newcastle for injured players is obvious: it disincentivises players from ducking out and encourages them to develop some inner fortitude. Now, that's unacceptable, but choosing to go out fighting every weekend is somehow mentil elf and not just a terrible life choice.

That bit were he says “Colley” and he’s scared of him returning again is 110% correct. Mike Tyson said exact same. Mike the fighter is gone but he’s still ascared of him coming back into his life because he makes the family man Mike look like a bitch. He said it on his podcast when he had Sugar Ray Leonard on. So mental health wise I’d say he’s correct especially like it’s a spilt personality. Like 2 different people.

Did he claim to be a hooligan in the early 2000s, I started getting into in 1990 and it was practically over then. By 2000 if you had a good off then it was your last one because you would be on camera and due a ban, might have thrown a punch and it got split up straight away but no such thing as hooliganism by then.

He's 5 foot 2, 7 stone wet through and talks like a softie. Hard?? HARD?! Set me up a fight with him. I'm 6 foot, 13 stone and like a gym session or 85. Fair fight init? When, where, how, why and who. Sort it. I'm there. Cheers all the best lads

Must be one of the worst episodes. Skipped through most of it, loves his own voice.

Seems a nice enough man in his own way but the events described sound pathetic tbh. Imagine throwing away a place in the Newcastle team with Bobby Robson for scrapping. Not sure that's a MH issue either, just lack of sense.
