Verse 3: Unity and Justice and Freedom is the current national anthem. The first verse has not been used since the end of WWII. Even when it was used it meant Germany is first in my heart, not that Germany conquers all its enemies.

The second verse is nice, it sings the praises of german women, wine and song. Who could dislike a national anthem that sings about wine women and song? Therefore, make the second verse the official sung verse from now on.

@@thegreypenguin5097 restore the 1st. I think it's misunderstood. Germany being above all else originally meant that 1 unified Germany should be the 1 goal everyone strives for above all else. The nazis just misused it and ruined it.

MODEN ANTHEM IS THE 3RD VERSE ONLY August Heinrich Hoffmann (who called himself Hoffmann von Fallersleben after his home town to distinguish himself from others with the same common name of "Hoffmann") wrote the text in 1841 on holiday on the North Sea island of Heligoland, then a possession of the United Kingdom (now part of Germany). Hoffmann von Fallersleben intended "Das Lied der Deutschen" to be sung to Haydn's tune, as the first publication of the poem included the music. The first line, "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles, über alles in der Welt" (usually translated into English as "Germany, Germany above all else, above all else in the world"), was an appeal to the various German monarchs to give the creation of a united Germany a higher priority than the independence of their small states. In the third stanza, with a call for "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit" (unity and justice and freedom), Hoffmann expressed his desire for a united and free Germany where the rule of law, not monarchical arbitrariness, would prevail.[5] In the era after the Congress of Vienna, influenced by Metternich and his secret police, Hoffmann's text had a distinctly revolutionary and at the same time liberal connotation, since the appeal for a united Germany was most often made in connection with demands for freedom of the press and other civil rights. Its implication that loyalty to a larger Germany should replace loyalty to one's local sovereign was then a revolutionary idea. The year after he wrote "Das Deutschlandlied", Hoffmann lost his job as a librarian and professor in Breslau, Prussia (now Wrocław, Poland), because of this and other revolutionary works, and was forced into hiding until being pardoned after the revolutions of 1848 in the German states.

The full version of Deutschlandlied is the anthem of all patriots of the world. Because a true patriot (or nationalist, it's a meaningless distinction) is not only able to love and serve his country, but also to emphathyse with all patriots all over the world. And when a Nation is suffering, maybe dying, because of the ineptitude of its own political class (and also its citizens), they stand all together, to clench a simple, unbreakable truth: no one will ever abolish a nation by decree. DEUTSCHLAND ÜBER ALLES ÜBER ALLES IN DER WELT!

Do you actually know what it means? It was made 1841, nearly 100 years before the Nazis as a patriotic song. Germany above everything meant: An united german fatherland (Germany was splittered in many states at that time), is above any other political aim in the world. If you read on this song, there is no single nazi phrase. So how could call someone using this old patriotic sentence a Nazi? That´s extremely offending and just wrong! Hoffman von Fallersleben made it, not Hitler!

No! "The line "Germany, Germany above all" meant that the most important goal of the revolutionaries should be a unified Germany overcoming the perceived anti-liberal Kleinstaaterei. Along with the Flag of Germany, it was one of the symbols of the March Revolution of 1848." It means unified Germany above all differences of small germans states.

Mr. Jordi Enrique Buitrago Soetendal: Das Deutschland Lied was declared official anthem of Germany in 1922 by the social democratic President of the Reich Friedrich Ebert, 11 years before the rise of Adolf Hitler. The third stanza was declared the only one of the German anthem in 1991, but the first stanza has not been officially prohibited.

I think the tune is lovely and I think ueber alles refers to holding country above everything else in my heart. I also think the decision to change the national anthem to Einikeit und Freiheit was made because of the reminder of the Nazi and their imperialism.
