I’m a drummer and I tell you Karen was right in there with all the great jazz and rock drummers of her day! I loved that she played traditional grip with the left stick on the snare and the hand speed she demonstrated around the kit! Of course most know her for her outstanding alto vocals but don’t be fooled because Karen was also a marvelous drummer! I learned a lot by watching her performances! Hats off to Karen Carpenter: drummer and singer 🎤🥁extraordinaire!

I think maybe when Buddy Rich said she was his favorite drummer he may not have been kidding. No wonder she didn’t want to come out front. Crisp, accurate, tasteful, and that speed shows real stamina, particularly with that light a touch. She was a truly gifted singer but on this her drumming is better. So Buddy Rich said she was his favorite drummer (when asked who his favorite drummer was) and John Lennon told her she had a beautiful voice. That’s quite a pair of endorsements.

Karen Carpenter was a drummer first. In fact, she only learned to sing once she had already enrolled as a music major at California State University, Long Beach. She got in thanks to her monster chops as a drummer and percussionist, only joining the choir at the behest of her brother.

I feel confident that had Karen been allowed to keep on being 'a drummer who sang' (clearly in her element sitting behind a drum kit) the world would have been a better place - and Karen would have continued to enthrall us to this day. When first I discovered her drumming (only recently) I fell in love with her music all over again, 53 year after the first time! Since being a 10 year old - I had no idea that Karen also played drums on 'Close to You'! The first 'pop' song that inspired my imagination! What a huge talent, what a huge loss to the world. So young. I could cry..

Yeah, that definetly sounds like a popularity contest, not a test of ability. They were both great drummers, but neither of them were The best drummer in 1968. They were no where near Billy Cobham, Art Blakey, Buddy Rich, Greg Errico, Jimmy Carl Black, John Mayhew, Jimmy Cobb, John Stephen French, Buddy Deppenschmidt, Tony Williams,Hal Blaine, Mickey Roker, Bill Bruford, and plenty of others. I'm talking strictly about Technical ability not album sales, fame or their impact on culture et cetera. Carpenter was a great vocalist and an underrated drum to boot, she made my second favorite Christmas album ever. John Bonham influenced many great drummers, likely more than the majority of my list, but like I said I'm only judging straight drumming ability.

She felt powerful and in control when she was playing, and there’s no doubt that it didn’t detract from her ability to command attention when she sang. I’m so glad female musicians don’t have as much pressure on them to be the pretty singer at the front of the stage. These days, her drumming would be celebrated, and she’d be featured on other artists’ songs.

It's one thing to be able to play a jazz motif on the drums like that at that speed. For Karen also being able to sing while doing the rest is absolutely incredible, and something that no matter how hard I've tried to do it in the past, I just can't do. I have a hard time with the four-way limb independence needed to play drums at all!

Very humble about their success...

What a performance! At a time when women who played drums could count on the fingers of one hand, Karen Carpenter was a real fireworks. By making her mark, thanks to her immense talent, we can say that Karen has opened the doors to many female artists, both vocal and percussion. We immediately feel such a passion, such joy overflowing with energy when she plays that we can only let ourselves be contaminated, for our greatest pleasure. And, in this recording, her brother Richard, on electric piano, and the bass player really do not give their place either. When we know the tragic end of this gifted woman debt, at only 32 years old, in 1983, and the battle she had to fight for years against a terrible illness that was little known at the time, anorexia nervosa, we look at this video with pleasure, of course, but also with a twinge of sorrow. Rest in peace, Karen. Even forty years after your untimely death, your audience, young and old, do not forget you.

Just watching this video makes me appreciate The Carpenters even more! They could have stayed in this jazzy pop area and possibly have become some of the greatest jazz musicians of their generation. However, they all realized that Karen’s is too special of a gift to share and changed their style to support that. Karen Carpenter influenced and empowered a whole generation of female singers and even some male singers. While many may not like them, their influence is unquestionable! In my opinion, they should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

My dad bought me an 8 piece Pearl drumset in 1980 for my 13th birthday. Gorgeous Blue metal flake, 7 ply wood fiberglass with Zildjian cymbals and hi-hat. She's playing with two floor Toms, her solo is effortless speed personified, just wish she had another Tom, a large Tom next to the small one attached to the bass. She would bring down the house even more. Like all the Ludwig Jazz sets back then, two Tom's like my set wasn't a thing yet. But makes you wonder, what if she played on a set like Neil did for Rush, probably make everyone's head spin just thinking about it. What a talent..to play like that and sing at the same time. Playing with the traditional grip is just icing on the cake, but I doubt she used Promark 2B with the nylon tips, too large for her smaller hands, but one can wonder. Videos like this are what makes You Tube incredible for me, I will always appreciate gems 💎 like this.
