Karate Drills: Combat Complex 1-5

Ойын-сауық

This week we show 5 different complexes to help bridge the gap between kata-based movements and their applications. Think of these as mini "katas" to supplement your existing database of katas, and give you ideas on how to apply those movements.
We are a group on a mission to return Karate to its roots through the use of Kata as self-defense.

great stuff as always. it's hard to know what a lot of old movements in kata are meant to be. but that knowledge seems to be resurfacing these days. its fascinating to find the many applications to each technique, what are usually taught as blocks turn out to be throws, locks or strikes. its great to see you guys delve into that and rediscover the true karate

The beginning technique of Complex 2 is one of the grab defenses for Kajukenbo. I can definitely see how it can work. Especially when done at full speed.

I think it's really useful to categorize techniques in groups this way, because it symplifies the complex. It's hard to remember, and even more to have in mind, one hundred, let's say, 100 sword moves. But not that much to just remember: either attack, counter or fake, on attack either cut or stab, on stab either do this or do that, etc. That's easier! Because there is no longer a ton of unrelated tricks, but a set of related things. Each move is related to all others, so that stuff is understod as a web, instead of as a line, or set of unrelated parts. Arm clearing: either you go under, over the top, move it one way or the other. That's it. Yeah, sure, there's ways you can CHOSE, PREFER to do it. But that should be your choice. I think that making these complex its great to make techniques easier to remember and understand as a whole. Hope I make sense, happy growing!

Like if you were trying to figure out the applications before the explanations. or you knew what some of them were.

Is it really that easy to break someone's arm?

The first one will hyperextend the elbow. Might not snap it all the way, but that arm isn't going to be very useful to the opponent afterward. The second one is more likely to cause a break of the elbow but, again, a hyperextension will render the arm almost useless. Third one has a good chance at dislocating the shoulder and/or tearing important muscles in the joint. The fourth is most likely to result in an actual arm snap if done at speed. Remember, he's going slow so he can show what's going on and for the safety of his partner. If he actually does these moves, they're going to be very fast and very violent with his focus being as if that arm isn't even there as he tries to do those movements.

Ahh I remember these days. This stuff will work as a kid at school but not in real life where other person is aggressively trying to take u out or resisting a little
