Karate: Sparring with Kata [Part 2]

One main goal at Karate Culture is to help others use kata in sparring. It never made sense to us that academies would teach kata (forms) and their applications but then when it was time to spar, none of those techniques appeared.
We believe that the only way to effectively use kata in self-defense is to practice it in pressure situations. This includes sparring scenarios.
This video shows but a few of our many drills to help us reach this pinnacle of kata combat.
We are a group on a mission to return Karate to its roots through the use of Kata as self-defense.

Greetings from Seville, Spain. My partners and me are formed a Whatsapp group and we have been meeting all the weekends during the last year in summer until today. We fell in love with karate some years ago and we practice a lot. We are trying to emulate your kata sparring's videos. Thanks for share!

Last month I already earn my black belt (first dan) Shito ryu Karate, and I just want to start to implement all the kata techniques into kumite, it is not going to be easy, but if it was it, anybody could do it, this is what the sparring should be every time, why spend so much time in kata and then just throw punches and kicks in kumite? Karate is not only power, there are a lot of techniques in order to avoid damage, I want to use what I learn in kumite, because Kata is compliment of kumite. Great video as always, you really inspired me to keep getting better and improving!! Greetings from Bolivia! OSU!

Something I've been trying to work on with my own Kumite is adding in throws and closing to make throws. Also trying to work in the more unusual strikes (i.e. not strigh punches and kicks) and work them into combos.

    >Any martial art is not really meant to fight other martial artists. Yes! My Sensei likes to joke that Karate was invented to beat up drunken sailors. Probably not too far from the truth. A lot of moves in Karate work really poorly on an opponent that knows how to throw and pull a straight punch well. They work really well on the average bozo that has no clue though. As far as the war of attrition, this also strikes me as quite true of many of the modern sport martial arts. Watching two Muay Thai fighters go at it is certainly impressive, but I'm not sure it's a style I want to emulate, especially when someone is actually trying to hurt me.

So true! First rule of a self-preservation martial art is to avoid the fight as much as possible. But if it happens, end it as quickly as possible

A great example from Muay Thai is blocking a kick with your shin, or a great thing you see in fights is, one fighter stands there, takes a leg kick in order to immediately retaliate with his own. Works quite well when you're trying to score points and wear down your opponent over multiple rounds. I'm not so sure it's a viable tactic for an actual confrontation that will likely be over in seconds.

Shin checking is definitely a viable option in a real confrontation if you land forward after the check. Rather than bring your leg straight up and just blocking the kick, imagine driving forward and landing heavy on the front leg after you check. This way you're moving in at the same time as blocking and you're less susceptible to getting swept since you're staying grounded and driving forward

Rather like driving forwards after or with a front kick. I guess you could almost treat it like a front kick that is chambered, but never thrown.

HI! I have been watching alot of your videos and am starting Kyokushin and Hapkido in a few months. I would like to know if you have any tips or suggestions to new practitioners in Karate. I've trained in Judo and Muay Thai before.

thanks for the question! Judo+Muay thai is a great base to get your feet wet with Karate. Kyokushin especially will feel similar to muay thai in terms of the heavy sparring and striking emphasis. Since you have training before, our only advice would be to enjoy the journey, appreciate the differences in the arts and realize it's all the same in terms of human movement so finding similarities will help you grow exponentially

At around 7 minutes in you talk about closing. I think this is pretty evident in all Kata and Bunkai. The tactic isn't to trade punches, it's to block or avoid, close while throwing your own strikes in retaliation, and then throw or lock your opponent to end the fight. You might be able to knock your opponent out or he might knock you out, but if you throw him or break his arm the fight is definitely over.

This is probably the closest thing to how Okinawan Karate was originally supposed to be. Too bad the old masters didn't teach the meaning of katas and drills, under the belief you have to discover it yourself (IT CAN happen, but after years of practice, and it's not for everybody), hence leading new generations into creating kumite, and practising it and katas as two completely separate things.

Alessandro, good evening from Manaus (Brazil). There was a higher problem, when karate was introduced to the schools, can you think what would be to teach teenagers about theses techniques? All about these was very closed because its effectiveness is showed here. I suggest you three books: bunkai jutsu (Ian Abernethy), hidden karate and 75 blocks for karate. Ossu.
