Kaplan Turbine Working and Design

With help of 3D Animation Working and Design aspects of a Kaplan turbine is elaborated in this video lecture. Functions of spiral casing, guide vanes, runner blades, blade pitching and draft tube are explained here in a logical manner. Special importance is given to Kaplan turbine blade design aspects. Kaplan turbines are in top 3 Hydraulic Machines, in terms of installed capacity. Have a nice learning experience, Enjoy !

Can someone please explain to me what is the use of the swirl casing for Kaplan turbine. If the end requirements for water entering the runner are to be axial and uniform throughout the perimeter, we can simply put the runner in the pipe from which water is entering the swirl casing. It would reduce pressure loss as well.

I have a doubt here. So, when water comes out from the draft tube into the open atmosphere, what makes sure that the pressure have come down to atmospheric level?? It it the length of the tube or the cross section ? if so then again there is more doubt. The flow rate and flow velocity is variable. If for a certain design, what happens if water enters at high speed (higher than the design speed).

So here is a question, in almost all of the diagrams and videos I've seen, they always have vertical guide vanes, so as my family owns a hydro station for about 50 - 60 years, the first one in 1920's was Francis type with 3 turbines, after the Soviet rule once my family got the property back ( its was taken away because of nationalisation - no private property) we constructed a completely new hydro station with horizontal Kaplan turbine with 300 kw generator. Head is about 7m on low power and 5 m head with for example 6 m3/s would be max power. So our guide vanes are not vertical, they are horizontal but not exactly the guide vanes are about 20- 30 ish degrees against the exit tube, the turbine sits inside a concrete spiral room. So my question is what is the difference in having vertical vs horizontal guide vanes ( I beleave that in a horizontal setting it is Moore optimal for the angle of flow because water doest have to make a 90* turn
