This song was sampled from Lauryn Hill song "Mystery of Iniquity" she was actually supposed to sing the chorus however, Syleena Johnson ended up on the hook.

Kanye has never been afraid to go against the status quo. This song and Jesus Walks were proof of that and they were his two biggest singles off this album no less. I haven't always agreed with his message, but I respect the fact that he's always spoke his mind.

fun fact Lauryn Hill was supposed to do the hook and Ms. Johnson was working on her album in the room and he asked her to do it cause it had to be finished with in the hour

Another video you should react to is "Heard 'em Say" - Kanye West. I believe it's on the second album though (Late Registration).

Fun fact: Lauren Hill was on the original, but he couldn't get it cleared to use that version.

I love your in-depth analysis in really breaking down the content of these songs. This song in particular has a lot to unpack. One part you missed that I always think of is in the 2nd verse: "I can't even pronounce nothin', pass that Ver-say-see. But then I spend 400 bucks on this, just to be like "n**** U aint up on this!"

This was one of the first albums that changed the scope of Hip-Hop. Who would've thought a producer-turned-rapper would do it? Lol. Looking forward to that reaction. A lot of Ye's critique isn't that he cant rap, its moreso he doesn't write his own lyrics all the time. I personally dont have an issue with it, but the "real hip hop" fans hold it against him. Syleenah Johnson is singing a part of Lauryn Hill's song "Mystery of Inequity". Kanye couldn't get Lauryn's vocal samples cleared in time and got Syleenah to sing her part.
