Being a box to box midfielder doesn't erase the fact that he's a DM.

I cannot stand Chelsea. But I completely agree. Ngolo kante is one of the best players I’ve ever seen and probably the best dm I’ve ever watched play. The guy is almost worth 2 players at times. Chelsea have been very lucky to be able to watch him every week for as long as they have as what he does is allows a team the type of balance that not many can provide. Most teams have to use two players to give that. He is truly unbelievable

He is not a CDM he has his own role .

16/17 kante was cdm but when sarri came him tbf he added that box to box role to his game, which has helped massively

He is the best DM ever in the modern era for sure. However people always miss how good this guy is with ball passing dribbling running with it even gets goals whe allowed to go forward. he is just a complete midfielder. He is a one off, and will go down as a Legend in the game.

You don’t get many £32m “bargain’s” in this game, but he’s certainly one of them. Flawless.

People need to get the distinction right. Kante is a defensive midfielder. He's not a holding midfielder. Jorginho is a holding midfielder, Fabinho is a holding midfielder. Busquets, Matic Fernandinho are holding mids. Sure Kante CAN do a holding role and be phenomenal, he's just much better utilized as a box-to-box hunter.

Most box to box midfielders, Yaya Toure, for example, are better going forward than they are at defending. A CDM is a midfielder that sits in front of the back 4/5 and is responsible for shielding the defense and initiating attacks with his passing.

Xabi Alonso was better than Kanté. Very different styles but Alonso, in his prime, was the best CDM I'd ever seen, as well as the best long passer I've ever seen. But that's my preference.

'Best of all time' - Probably the most stupid, moronic, thing to say. So did they review every great defensive midfielder going back to 1900 and come to the conclusion he is the one? Kante has Jorginho, Kovacic, sat next to him. A lot of the time 3 Centre Backs or even full 5 defenders behind him. City basically with 1 sitting player and everyone else can push on. Fernandinho playing at Chelsea over the last 10 years would be like a holiday for him and would barely break sweat. He can do it all - tackling, leadership, range of passing whether it be short, long, stick one in the top corner, commit 20+ fouls a game without getting a yellow card (now that is a skill), It is not hard for Kante to stand out in that Chelsea side because who else is really setting the world a light since he has been there maybe apart from Hazard every so often. A lot of very good solid players who do a good job for their team. At City you have had KDB, Sterling, Bernardo, Foden, Aguero, Yaya, Sane. Even the full backs are effectively attacking midfielders - the only man (Rodri more so now) protecting that defence has been Fernandinho.

Nah its easier to play any position in a team than dominates the ball. Teams can barely get out against city with their relentless attacks. This makes a holding mids job far easier.

Just *imagine* being a player who plays the same position during the same period of time and won 3 Champions Leagues in a row, multiple La Liga titles, and a Copa America... but some silly radio jocks trying to have a discussion can't even remember your name is CASEMIRO. 🤦‍♂️ Probably the most criminally underrated player in world football at the moment.
