Kanku-Dai / Kosokun / Kushanku Bunkai (“cup and saucer” to angular knife-hands)

Спорт

iainabernethy.co.uk/ A short clip showing bunkai for the “cup and saucer” position to the angular knife-hands of Kanku-Dai / Kosokun-Dai / Kushanku. This clip was taken from a two-day event and obviously does not capture all that came before and after. The video is therefore not a complete explanation of the underlying concepts nor can it explain how such drills fit into the wider training matrix.

Not just the karate community, this guy is a breath of fresh air in the martial arts community. I've spent quite a few years with self defence ideas and concepts that I thought we're a bit questionable, then discovered Iain was years ahead of me, as we're many of the BCA guys.

Teachers need to be more open to learning as well, there's always another way to do anything, and if that new white belt has a suggestion, hear him out, that black belt doesn't mean you know everythin, just my view on it. I've picked up many good ideas from newbies, just by being open to listening to them, I always allow students to share there ideas and concepts with both me and the club, then we play with it a bit and see what we discover

Sensei, you don't know how on-time this video was, because in my dojo we have been working on Kanku Dai and Kanku Sho for the past few weeks. Very relatable lesson, especially given that we use our student's knowledge of the Pinan kata to guide them through the Kanku/Kusanku series

There's so much on youtube bro. It's an awesome time to be training, but that physical training with a partner will always be needed.

@@SenseiEmmett The problem is, if you're in a school that is not open to students trying out the techniques in a different way than what the teacher shows, you may be tagged as a deviant. Having a partner that is willing to help you train what you want to train is more difficult.

If I didn't agree with you to an extent I wouldn't be here, but you'll only get good form e.g stable stances, good posture, clean efficient movement, focused shisen etc. by drilling and drilling and drilling with a good instructor. And one can only apply the bunkai if one has good form, or at least, the better the form, the more effective the application. Even being able to distinguish between the good stuff on KZread and the stuff that only works on a "compliant attacker". In short I agree KZread has lots of potential but is a bad place to start.

@@EneSacarification I believe knife defence is one of those things that needs taught in person. Videos are prone to misunderstanding and I don’t want to inadvertently contribute to the confusion around this topic. This podcast may be of interest though: iainabernethy.co.uk/content/weapon-defence
