We were lucky to catch this bird during test flight at Nyíregyháza airport, right after that she got this beautiful green-white paint.
Usually during test flight days, pilots start the helicopter's engines without the rotor blades first, to see if the engines are running without any problem.
If they find everything good, mechanic crew can start the blade installation. First the lower blades, then the upper ones.
When the blades are installed, the crew can start the blade tracking. During blade tracking the pilot operates the helicopter in ground idle, then flight idle while one mechanic is standing in front of the helicopter with a long wooden rod. At the end of the wooden rod strong cardboard attached, with which the mechanic touches the end of the blades. Each blade has its own colour. The paint on the end of the rotor blade leaves a mark on the cardboard indication the mechanic what track the blades are running.
Ka-26 is a multi-purpose, light helicopter, invented by N.I. Kamov in the middle of the 1960s.
First flight of this type was in August 18, 1965, she was mainly used for training flights, agricultural tasks, passenger transport, cargo transport, pipe inspection and also for traffic controll by the State Automobile Inspectorate (GAI).
This type has two Vedeneyev M14-V-26 petrol powered, four stroke radial engines with 9 cyl. and 325 hp each. Due to the relatively low airspeed of the helicopter, to maintain the proper cylinder head and oil temperatures the engines were produced with an iron fan, which makes the unique siren sound, and it is often believed that Ka-26 is driven by gas turbines.
Thanks to the co-axial main rotor system this type is extremely benign, the vast majority of pilots loves and loved it to fly. Agricultural versions had pressurized cockpit, where the pressure was made by that "nose" on the front of the canopy, which is called separator. This thing pumped outside air through a carbon filter into the pilots cabin providing clean air.

Ka-26 still one of the most unique designs ever. And it sounds very cool, too.
Fascinating video, had no idea about the process using the rod to do the blade tracking! Looks a little scary to me but I'm sure these guys know what they're doing. Thanks for posting!

Well yeah, it looks super scary! Its not a "What could possibly go wrong?" situation, because: everything! But yes, they are very experienced mechanics and pilots.

We used to use different coloured wax pencils taped to each blade to check the tracking.

ЭТО называется проверка соконусности винтов после установки лопастей,законцовки каждой лопасти окрашиваются цветными мелками,потом на определённых оборотах винта приставляют шест с бумажной вставкой, на которой остаются цветные полоски от каждой лопасти,затем отгибают тиммерную пластину на нужный угол,чтобы все лопасти были в одном конусе,как то так.

Beautiful! Both the helicopter and the photography. Thank you for the description and detailed video of how the blades are aligned. I always wondered about the top blades and the stick. Also much appreciated is the concise and complete description of the engines. Question, it looks really agile and quick responding, even at low speeds. How would you compare it to a '500 or a '630 (NOTAR)?

Well...! You gave a very good example with the notar, it kinda same! The vertical stabilizers are effective over 60km/hour (around 35mph), so the rudder is not that agile. If you check out my other videos, when you can see for example an agricultural turn from inside, you can see the pilot is pushing the pedal to the maximum for it. It is almost unimaginable for a chopper with normal tail rotor. The stick is as sensitive as in a Huey, you use kinda big movements, but if you find out the tricks, you can make good manouvers with it! :)

@@KamovRider Thanks for the response. So the Crop Duster with the "nose" is not the best for Ag-Turns. What would you estimate the % of KA-26 is used in agriculture application? A friend of mine used to dust cotton fields with 47. 206 and Hiller 12. He used to land on a tank truck to refill live.

I admire the coordinated team work, the contra rotating rotors are really fantastic in eliminating the tail rotors. It seems to be operating with less vibrations too. I'm going to subscribe, I hope to see more of this Helicopter. Thank you for sharing this video with all of us.

Yes, the lower blades can be dangerous on ground, just like tail rotors on other helicopters.
Yeah..they flag the blades..so they can track them..each blade has a different colour chalk..yeah beautiful machine..Get a real kick out of the cargo platform they have attached to it..lol

Landing gear looks weak for its intended purpose
The Kamov KA-26 is certainly an ugly looking helicopter, like some giant prehistoric insect. However it appears to fly really good considering how old it is. Obviously its been maintained properly over the years.
