YES thank you for explaining why something like this is discriminatory cuz so many people really don't understand. Im white, but, i was homeless when I turned 18. I couldn't get an ID cuz i didnt have the money and I didnt have a home address! I couldn't vote either, cuz i didnt have a home address. I could not even get a library card because i didnt have a home address. So poor voters are already very effectively being supressed but this is just a little more obvious of a law they've put into place. If youve never experienced being poor or homeless you don't understand how it takes away your ability to do basically ANYTHING.

Hasan, I have followed you for many years, and sometimes I've disagreed with some things that you have said. But this is one of your best informational posts! I live in Louisiana where we have to have a valid photo ID to vote. So my issue is not with that. My two prominent issues with the voting laws in Georgia now are as you said, the removal of the drop off ballot boxes by more than half in largely minority counties, and the criminalizing of providing either food or water to people who waiting to vote. It's hot as hell in the South almost year-round, so water is essential for almost everything we do here. Transportation is a real issue for many. And to be able to vote outside of business hours is possibly the only way that many people will have an opportunity to vote. trump may not have started it, but he and his ilk have brought out the very worst in people. What's sad is that no matter what has happened, they are still following his lead, and essentially he is still winning.

Here's another take. Remember that one statistic where most Americans don't have more than $400 extra funds set aside for emergency? With that being said now I need to get ID to vote. Despite I already showed ID and proof of citizenship to _registered_ to vote in the first place. Now this is common situation: I lost my job, so funds are low. Food for families come first, so I stop paying for driving insurance. Now finally the hammer - I have to register my car and smog check to get that registration. In my state this process can cost around $300 - $500. Guess what happens when I can't get my car registered? I owe DMV money, and now I can't renewed my ID. And what happened when I can't renew my driving license? I just lost my avenue to vote because I don't currently have ID *_despite already registered to vote and prove I am a US citizen_* And all because I'm poor. Y'all see the problem now?

I haven’t realized until recently that a lot of people actually have expired ID’s. When I was still a full-time student and worked customer service, I literally didn’t have the time to wait at my local DMV to get a new one in a timely manner. Luckily, a family member was ultimately able to take me on a rare day off but people really have different and valid reasons for not having updated ID’s. The DMV also closes early so anyone who works a 9am-5pm is pretty much screwed. I’ve waited at the DMV for several hours and had been turned away because they were unable to get to my ticket before closing. I missed class for that and spent money I didn’t really have at the time to take an Uber there and back. I apologize, I’m venting lol

I work at a DV shelter and half of our participants need help getting their ID. Some were already on the streets and had their things stolen because homelessness. Others had to leave dangerous situations quickly and leave everything behind. They have no income because they’ve been isolated by their abuser and not allowed to have any financial independence. There are programs that will help pay for the cost of a new ID but that has its own application process and takes time.

No they make us have to identification ourselves and the 2 main ones they take are Drivers and Passport. Non-immogrant families/the poor dont gave that in hand. Same thing with classism with drivers because although we all want to drive a lot of us get liscense late because first we need the job or person to get a car, time and person to be taught by. It is the easiest thing to learn but whether it's available to you is a class issue. A Social Security Number should be enough for as simple yet important as voting. ID can be for bars and like liabitly activites or adopting or whatever, but voting is not a political hobby it determines our rights and livelihoods and ability to stop worsening other countries even. They dont even give enough time before for people who cant avoid working on voting day.

Take Colorado voter ID laws vs Georgia's. One is obviously implemented with accessibility and ease of use in mind and the other focuses on limiting access and ease of use to, somehow, discourage voter fraud when all it does is discourage voting PERIOD.

I didn’t know what to think about about requiring IDs when voting but now that I think about it, it’s extremely hard to get your documents. Especially if you’ve lost them or become homeless, etc. Citizens have social security numbers so why do we have to have documents?? It’s kinda why I don’t understand why WE have to file taxes. (Mainly when you work for a company and they take out the taxes) The government already knows how much you made and if you’re lower income then filing your taxes can be expensive. Then if you don’t file them correctly then you get in trouble for “lying”. It’s like this whole government hates poor people and wants to keep them poor. Or maybe it’s because they’ve conditioned people to have an implicit bias toward POC and therefore POC are always put at the bottom, or at least as much as possible. Idk, either way most poor are POC and that’s exactly how they wanted it. It’s crazy that so many people cannot see our society’s systemic racism, and it’s even crazier to me that they still don’t want to admit it to themselves or educate anyone. Anyway, thank you for giving me a new perspective on this topic.
