My longtime angst about how people refer to women as adhu/idhu but men as avar/ivar/avan/ivan. When my dad instructed me not to refer to people irrespective of gender as adhu/idhu as it’s objectification and advised to use proper nouns in both Tamil and English, I asked him why others are not doing so. He said it was due to lack of education and when I grow up, my generation would have learned it and know the difference and will use the proper nouns, but it is disheartening to learn that irrespective of the educational background, most people still use objectifying references for women. It hurts more when some women do it other women. When will this change?
