The light on the upper left corner provides light (in low light situations) to the size sensor to set speed and needle to 7"/45rpm or 12"/33rpm automaticly. In the platter mat and platter itself you'll find three lenses, to send the light to the sensor underneath. It also prevents the arm moving to the platter if you'ld press 'start' with no record on the platter. This is uniquely to the QL-L2 and the QL-L20 (the black version of the same turntable). The L-L1 misses out on this feature. (So by covering the lenses, might suspect a mall function in the electrics, but it is an easy fix;-) ) My two copies of this type turntable suffer from dry rubber insulator hoses, which function as shockabsorbers together with one spring per foot. This effects the spinning of the platter and its mat. By adding an propper size rubber ring (± 1mm thick) between the spring and the lower metal black casing the platters turns propperly again.

Thank you for all of this information. For me of course, but certainly for anyone that ends up at this video and reads these comments!

Very cool video and I learned enough to pull mine apart. I have one of these L-L1's and I've been repairing it and am stumped. I've replaced both belts and the needle and now the record will play if I manually queue it up and the STOP button will pick up the needle and return the tonearm. However, the START button does not work - it spins up the record and picks up the needle then starts to move the tonearm. The tonearm never stops moving to drop the needle on the record and will just keep trying to move to the left. Also, the automatic return when the record ends does not work. The needle just stays on the record and it keeps spinning. I just can't figure out what is supposed to control these couple of actions and why they don't work. All suggestions are welcome. What a mystery! It would be real helpful (i think) to know what the turntable senses that tells it to stop moving the tonearm over and start playing the record, and then recognizing the record is done to pick up the tonearm and return it to home. I can see what makes it stop at the home spot - there is a little mechanical switch that gets tripped, but these other two are a mystery. Is it an optical sensor that counts the distance traveled somehow or a sensor that see the needle move quickly to the center when the record is done?

Have you downloaded the service manual from vinylengine? I performed the offset adjustment and arm parallel adjustment and that seemed to fix a similar issue on mine.

@@nicholascigrand I would like to do that but vinylengine is locked for new users and I don't have an account. Would be great if there was a way to get registered or another way to get the document. The owner's manual is not good enough - does not provide any hints on what to do.

My player struggles to start certain records, the tone arm won’t sit low enough.. is this an adjustment issue or a record issue? I just bought mine refurbished and everything else works great

Check the manual at Vinyl Engine for tonearm adjustment but I think this could be resolved with a thin turntable mat on top of the stock vinyl mat.

How did you lift the tonearm up? I have a JVC L-L1 that’s very similar that I am trying to change the tonearm belt on and I’m having trouble getting it to lift upward.

It's been a while but I seem.to recall a screw or something at the pivot point that was removed that allowed me to loft the tone arm up. There must be a way so you can replace the cartridge/stylus from time to time. If you haven't yet, search for a manual online or go to VinylEngine and see if they have it. Good luck. Mine turned out to be a decent player.

could anyone heree tell me how i can adjust the auto return on this model? my turntable works really well except for the auto return engaging before the album is finished. or is there any way i can just disasemble the automatic functions? especially the auto return, and just have manual operation, so that i can play an album all the way through? albums that have longer running times get the last track cut off. sometimes if i cue the tone arm to the last song, it will play it all the way through. but if i have an album that has a track that fills the whole side, its kinda rough that this player wants to auto return too quick! any help appreciated, thanx!

Check the manual at Vinyl Engine for tonearm adjustment. It should be pretty clear. Another person mentioned that they aren't taking any new members but maybe that has reopened. If you can't get the manual, maybe you can obscure your email address and reply so one of us can email you a copy.
