    Hello, how r u. I have a few problems which maybe u could help me with. I have just received an L-A31 in very clean condition, even the dust lid is scratchless. But i have a query, the headshell & cartridge are turned slightly clockwise so the cue level arm is slightly down and the left hand side of headshell is up!!! Which surely is not correct? Or is it, because the videos i have seen of this turntable seem to be the same, including yours!? I have tried undoing the two screws under the collar which the headshell plugs in to and it does turn, but when u put the screws back in it seems to go the same way again!!! Which Leads me to believe there is a v out under the tone arm in that section so it finds that position constantly??? Its driving me NUTS!!! SHOULD the headshell be level on this model? Or turned clockwork slightly(surely not) so why do others seem to be this way? Oh, and what i think is the centreline down by the counterweight seems to be off, if it is a centreline? But its off the opposite way to the headshell/cartridge, as if the arm has turned anti clockwise slightly. Hopefully u still have this model to check it against my words. Or u may even know through experience. I would be SERIOUSLY grateful if u could help. Many thanks, David...

  • @popbumper

    What a mystery. I have no real idea why these are turned a bit. Truthfully, I never noticed it and am surprised that I didn't because I'm pretty OCD about that sort of thing. They stylus should be at a 90% angle - right? If they cut these masters at a perfect 90% angle, then it makes sense that the stylus should be in the exact position to replay properly in the groove. I have no answer. Did you ever find one?

  • @davidg8711
    @davidg871116 күн бұрын

    @@popbumperdon't u mean 90°? Not 90%.... So i guess by what u said, yours is also off and turned slightly? I've managed to sort mine now. It took some serious fiddling with the two screw on underside, turning the headshell which ever way it needs and then tightening it while holding it and eventually i got it right and is now at a perfect 90°. I even brought a tiny level bubble to put on top of head shell to make sure it is parallel to the record and tone arm is level. I have a Goldring E3 Cartridge set at a perfect 2grams which i checked on electric scales and it sounds GGGRRRREEEEEAAATTTT as Tony the Tiger said! Lol...

Ahh the good ol days.

  • @popbumper

    The pitch control wheel is likely the problem. A common problem is that these pitch control wheels are dirty on the inside and cause an erratic resistance to be read by the motor control circuit. I spray Deoxit into the wheel's potentiometer (open chassis and shoot a little into the device), rotate the knob back and forth about 20 times or more. Test and see if it stabilizes. If you can't get this to work, then you likely have a capacitor that has gone out of spec. Look for a blue capacitor (electrolytic) and replace it. Since this is over 25 years old, you can bet the capacitor has lived beyond it's intended life. Good luck.

    I have that same turntable but I never touched the counterweight and antiskating features. I'm saying this because I have both in 0 and still get sound. Do I have to change it like you do in 1.5 both?

  • @popbumper
    @popbumper Жыл бұрын

    You should. First - your counterweight might be showing 0, but it isn't really at 0. If it was, your tonearm would be balanced in mid-air, never touching the turntable. The way to setup any tonearm like this is to move the counterweight inward until the tonearm floats - meaning that it doesn't touch anything and seems balanced in the air. Then turn the numbered dial to 0 without moving the counterweight. Check it again to make sure it is still in a floating position. Now spin the counterweight slowly, ensuring the numbered dial moves with your turn of the counterweight. Once you get to 1.5, you'll have 1.5 grams of force on the stylus. Perfect. Then the anti-skate should be adjusted to match the 1.5g tracking force. You can get sound with antiskate at 0 - and likely have the tonearm skipping at mid-record and start to skate across it. But you could never play a record if you truly had 0 grams of tracking force. I hope that makes sense.

    could anyone heree tell me how i can adjust the auto return on this model? my turntable works really well except for the auto return engaging before the album is finished. or is there any way i can just disasemble the automatic functions? especially the auto return, and just have manual operation, so that i can play an album all the way through? albums that have longer running times get the last track cut off. sometimes if i cue the tone arm to the last song, it will play it all the way through. but if i have an album that has a track that fills the whole side, its kinda rough that this player wants to auto return too quick! any help appreciated, thanx!

    Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words, credit and link to my video! I was just asked about this the other day on my video, so I thought about it, and I just came up with a theory on the purpose of the neutral wire. I think it is a safety feature for when the contacts become fused together so that opening the lid would still kill the motor while the contacts are fused together. I'm going to assume the link has some conductivity (and it would be interesting to test a working switch to see if there is in fact continuity - it looks like a carbon compound of some sort), so if the contacts (the ones that have turned black on yours) were fused together, when the plunger is released, it would cause that piece of metal directly touching the plunger, to come into contact with the other end of the link, which is connected to neutral. This would result in a dead short, instantly blowing the link, releasing the other contact, killing power to the entire machine. What do you think? It's basically a safety feature to turn off the machine if the lid opens, even if the lid switch malfunctions. As those black marks indicate, there must have been an event that caused the contacts to fuse, so when the lid was opened, the link melted apart.

    Very cool video and I learned enough to pull mine apart. I have one of these L-L1's and I've been repairing it and am stumped. I've replaced both belts and the needle and now the record will play if I manually queue it up and the STOP button will pick up the needle and return the tonearm. However, the START button does not work - it spins up the record and picks up the needle then starts to move the tonearm. The tonearm never stops moving to drop the needle on the record and will just keep trying to move to the left. Also, the automatic return when the record ends does not work. The needle just stays on the record and it keeps spinning. I just can't figure out what is supposed to control these couple of actions and why they don't work. All suggestions are welcome. What a mystery! It would be real helpful (i think) to know what the turntable senses that tells it to stop moving the tonearm over and start playing the record, and then recognizing the record is done to pick up the tonearm and return it to home. I can see what makes it stop at the home spot - there is a little mechanical switch that gets tripped, but these other two are a mystery. Is it an optical sensor that counts the distance traveled somehow or a sensor that see the needle move quickly to the center when the record is done?

    The light on the upper left corner provides light (in low light situations) to the size sensor to set speed and needle to 7"/45rpm or 12"/33rpm automaticly. In the platter mat and platter itself you'll find three lenses, to send the light to the sensor underneath. It also prevents the arm moving to the platter if you'ld press 'start' with no record on the platter. This is uniquely to the QL-L2 and the QL-L20 (the black version of the same turntable). The L-L1 misses out on this feature. (So by covering the lenses, might suspect a mall function in the electrics, but it is an easy fix;-) ) My two copies of this type turntable suffer from dry rubber insulator hoses, which function as shockabsorbers together with one spring per foot. This effects the spinning of the platter and its mat. By adding an propper size rubber ring (± 1mm thick) between the spring and the lower metal black casing the platters turns propperly again.

The transistors replaced are the same kind as the ones put in, they are just in different cases. Only one of those original transistors was not working, so may have been easier to replace that. Finally, the reason this was behaving strangely when a note sustained (volume swell and stuttering at the end) was one of the transistors (#5 in the signal chain) was incorrectly installed. The Emitter and Collector were reversed. Took awhile to figure that one out...
