Justine Bateman speaks candidly on embracing aging

Justine Bateman is sharing an empowering and refreshing message when it comes to women and aging, and delves into what's behind the harsh criticisms. "It's really about fear. That person is telling you what they think of themselves...they're not telling you about you."

Both of the interviewers have had plenty of fillers and probably look at her as an activist because they don't know anyone their age who hasn't had botox. I'm 62, and everyone I know who is my age or close to it has had that. We’re in the age of SHALLOWNESS and an unhealthy obsession with SELFIES! My dearest and best friend…6 years older than I (I’m 57) sizes up EVERYONE…woman or man…she comments how old they look….I occasionally remind her that “not ever is interested in getting Botox and fillers every six weeks to please others”. This is something she does and I believe she is unaware that she would look like the rest of us if not for spending 1800 bucks every 6 or 8 weeks to maintain her plastic appearance and unusually large upper lip. We only think aging is ugly because that's what we've been taught to believe. Usually by men who are trying to sell us something. And it's only going to get worse too, because few people age naturally anymore. If you're a young kid now, you've probably never seen a person who has aged 100% naturally, so when you finally do, of course it will look ugly, shocking, and grotesque to you. I'm in my 60's now, and my looks definitely aren't what they used to be. But then, they aren't supposed to be! I definitely understand the temptation to intervene, but so far I've done nothing. I never used botox or fillers. I'm resisting as long as I can.

Yes, as I've already noted "just be thankful..." I'm now 70. My mother died at 55. My firstborn son suddenly died at 19. Eternal beauty comes from within. Hatred and selfishness makes one ugly and sometimes even rapidly changes the outward appearance.

Years ago, I took my 87 year old mother in law to her specialist and when she asked him a question, he turned and directed his answer to me, instead of her, who was sitting right next to me! Why? Did he think she was too old to comprehend the answer? Then there are those people who change their voice when speaking to the elderly as if they're children! In my opinion, we need to teach our children to respect their elders, listen to what they have to say, there is so much knowledge that they can teach us, stop treating them as if they are children!

But I realize there are so many other things to enjoy in life rather than trying to look like you did at 30-news alert-you never will. And that’s ok. How lucky am I that because I focus on keeping my body and mind strong, I’m able to hike with my adult kids and dogs, play pickleball & tennis with my friends and husband, paint, draw, read, travel…wow…isn’t life a blast?! This whole conversation is exactly why I wrote my thesis on Marguerite Duras, whose novel, Emily L., began with: "It began with the fear..." and then she speaks of her aging face in The Lover: " At eighteen it was already too late. I aged. This aging was brutal. It spread over my features, one by one. I saw this aging of my face with the same sort of interest I might have taken, for example, in the reading of a book." And, lastly, this wonderful passage (also from "The Lover"): “I've known you for years. Everyone says you were beautiful when you were young, but I want to tell you I think you're more beautiful now than then. Rather than your face as a young woman, I prefer your face as it is now. Ravaged.” Thank you, Justine, for saying and doing what Duras did. You are both beautiful, at whatever age, because you are you. xo

I strongly believe in not stereotyping people due to their age and no two people age the same way. I do believe we should all try to be the best version of ourselves we possibly can be so we should be eating right, exercising and taking care of our skin, the rest is up to time and gravity.

Justine Bateman is so beautiful and timeless in her beliefs. I absolutely love her for empowering me in spite of me aging. Aging is so inevitable, and I really don’t want anything to do with the plastic surgeries, laser treatments, Botox, etc. thank you for sharing this! Our lives become more intrinsically rich and valuable as we age. Thank you for speaking truth to me in this area!!

I'm a year older than her. I think what makes her look great is also her attitude, her soul-- that which lives inside the aging vessel. She's still beautiful, because that attitude and soul and light shines through, you can see it in her eyes. ✌🏻❤️🌻✨ I hope at my age, I too am carrying myself well, and my own light and soul and confidence shines out from my vessel too. The world needs more of these genuine people who are absolutely confident in themselves regardless of what others' opinions are. It's my belief that we all need to do less looking at others and being judgy, and more looking within ourselves, being honest with ourselves, and tending to our own hearts and souls. Doesn't hurt to take good care of your body, of course, because that's the vehicle of your soul! You take care of your car, don't you? Stop worrying about others, take good care of yourself, and you be YOU. ✌🏻❤️🌻✨

Brilliant as always, Justine. Thanks for bringing this cultural issue to the forefront of America’s psyche. Admittedly, I had recently considered plastic surgery. Now I am re-thinking it. If everyone hears you, then everyone will (hopefully) change their feelings about it. ❤ PS-I wrote to your brother when I was 16 because I had a mega crush on him!He wrote back to me twice, one time saying, “I have a sister Justine, she’s 16, like you”. So cute, right?

I’m 35 years old and so far I am so happy to say I have had nothing done to change my natural aging process, but it is a mental challenge, especially when all my friends are getting ‘tweakmeants’ here and there. I find aging beautiful and I do think we should be embracing it. Such a shame so many of us want to try and erase something that is natural.

I’m 45, and I too saw girlfriends with the tweeks start around 35. I’m so glad I never did!! You should see them now!!!! I was busy with my littles and so always put myself on the back burner. Promising I would “catch up” to them when my kids were a bit older. Now I see them and cringe. It’s a large , disproportionate facial features. Face just grows larger and they start all looking the same? Can’t describe why exactly, but I’m just thankful I didn’t jump onboard. I choose to continue to work on the inside and keeping the soul bright. ✌️💕

@havefaithincards. You should wait to be 50 or 55. The réel aging is beginning in the 50's. Having a few wrinkles or a dozens of grey hair, a little ponds to lost and being on 2 months diets...all these cosmetic things..is not aging..,. The réel aging is not being able to do things that you were doing easily or at will before.Or losing the désire of doing these things....And expérience loss ( death of siblings, friends, people in social cercle, former professors, tho be reluctant to new habits like TikTok or Tinder for instance ( even if you re a mature geek) ....etc) and the true meaning of the cycle of life ( the children becoming adults). You are becoming a full mature person whenever your understand almost physically and intimally that the time is count...like in a clockwork...As a result you decide to avoid peoole and situations wich are point less in your own développent and accept to be dislike.... People , especially women, are unfortunataly to focus on cosmétic nowadays and looks.

This actually almost made me tear up a bit. It's so sad how this is considered "activism" as it should just be "normal." I love her message, and she's right - she is rad!! I think many older women who have aged naturally are more beautiful than those who have tried to fake youthfulness with surgery and injections. You can always tell, and the women who age naturally and learn to embrace it have this beautiful, radiant authenticity and confidence around them, while those who have altered their face feel disconnected and insecure. There's always this energy of unease. On the other hand, as a woman myself who is starting to face the aging process, I TOTALLY get the immense pressure that is felt to continue looking a certain way. We all just gotta keep doing the inner work, like Justine said!

I think it depends on the individual. Some people keep it all natural, others bleach their teeth or paint their nails, use make up, trim off dried hair, color their hair, get Botox or have cosmetic surgery. All of these techniques are used to look more radiant or look your best or be more youthful looking. I think it depends on the person and their reasoning behind it. Some people aren’t trying to look 20 years younger but just a more refreshed look. I think it’s really important to not start thinking everyone has to have the same outlook on this. What’s really bothersome, is the pressure put on young people to look perfect and never age and never get a chance to develope who they really are as a person But if a mature person decides to whiten their teeth or get a little Botox to look their best, I don’t think there is any great harm in that. A lot of people loose weight to look more youthful, but for some reason, that’s not stigmatized.
